Why Xiaomiβs smartphone might not respond to the screen β and what to do about it
Xiaomiβs failure to respond to touch or not to turn on the display is familiar to many users, and the reasons range from a software failure after a MIUI update to physical damage to the screen plume, but even if the screen doesnβt work, turning off the device is still necessary β for example, to reboot, save charge or prepare for repair.
In this article, we will discuss all the current ways to turn off Xiaomi without a working display, including mechanical methods (buttons, battery recovery), software solutions (ADB, Mi Account), and even non-obvious tricks with a charger. Importantly, some methods require pre-tuning β we will discuss them too.
If your Redmi, POCO or Mi doesnβt respond to presses, but it vibrates or makes sounds, itβs probably a problem in the display or touchscreen, and if the device is completely dead (no vibration, no charging indication), the causes can be more serious, from a dead battery to damage to the motherboard.

Method 1: Hard Reset (Hard Reset)
The most versatile method that works on 90% of Xiaomi models is forced reboot through hardware buttons, which does not require a desktop screen, PC connection or presets. Suitable for the Redmi Note 10/11/12, POCO X3/X4, Mi 11/12 and other devices with a non-removable battery.
Instructions:
- π Hold the power button (usually located on the right) for 10-15 seconds, POCO F3) It may take up to 20 seconds.
- π If the device vibrates or the indicator lights up, release the button.
- π± If nothing happens after holding the power button, try the combination: power button + Volume increase (hold 10-15 seconds).
- β‘ On models with removable battery (for example, old Redmi). 3S/4A) You can just remove the battery from the 30 seconds.
β οΈ Warning: On some devices, prolonged power button retention can trigger a Fastboot instead of turning it off. If the screen doesn't go out after the vibration, and the image of a rabbit in a hat (Mi Bunny) appears, then you've hit the Fastboot. Then release the buttons and try again.
Make sure your smartphone is not connected to charging.
Try holding the power button for 20 seconds.
If it doesnβt work, add a volume button.
On models with removable battery, remove the battery-->
Method 2: Disconnect via ADB (for advanced users)
If your Xiaomi has previously been enabled debugging USB (USB Debugging, you can turn it off via your computer using the tool ADB (Android Debug Bridge: This method is suitable for devices that respond to a PC connection (e.g., make a connection sound or are identified in Device Manager).
Step-by-step:
- Download and install Platform Tools (part of the Android SDK).
- Connect your smartphone to your PC through USB-cable (preferably original).
- Open the command prompt (Win + R β cmd) and go to the folder with ADB:
cd C:\platform-tools- Check if the device is detected:
adb devicesIf your Xiaomi serial number appears in the answer, you can continue. If not, check the drivers or cable.
- Execute the shutdown command:
adb shell reboot -pβ οΈ Attention: If ADB The device cannot see the device, but the smartphone makes the connection sound, try it:
- π Reconnect the cable to another USB-port (preferably) USB 2.0).
- π Reboot your PC or change cable (some cheap cables donβt support data transfer).
- π οΈ Install Mi drivers PC Suite (official software from Xiaomi).
π‘
If the ADB is not working, but the smartphone is defined as "Qualcomm 9008" - this means that the device is in emergency mode (EDL), in which case it can only be turned off physically (remove the battery or wait for discharge).
Method 3: Remote shutdown via Mi Account (only for some models)
Xiaomi offers remote management through the Mi Account, but it doesnβt work on all devices and requires pre-configuration. If you previously enabled Find Device in your security settings, you can try turning off your smartphone via the web interface.
How to do this:
- Go to i.mi.com and log in to your Mi Account.
- In the Devices section, select your smartphone (if it is displayed online).
- Click on Delete Data or Block. On some firmware, this may cause the device to shut down after the command is executed.
β οΈ Note: This method does not guarantee shutdown β it can simply lock the device or erase data, and if the smartphone is not connected to the Internet (for example, due to a malfunction). Wi-Fi/mobile network, the team will not reach.
Alternatively, use the Mi Cloud app on another smartphone:
- π± Install Mi Cloud from Google Play.
- π Sign in with the same account as on a locked device.
- π Find your smartphone in the list and try sending a command to Block or Erase data.
Why does Mi Account not always work for shutdown?
Method 4: Battery discharge (extreme case)
If no other method has worked, the only option is to wait until the battery is completely discharged, which can take hours to a day, depending on the model and current charge level.
- π Not responding to the buttons.
- π₯οΈ Not defined by ADB.
- π Not connected to Mi Account or not connected to the Internet.
How to speed up the discharge:
- π΅ Turn on music or video (if your smartphone responds to voice commands or is connected to a Bluetooth speaker).
- π¦ Activate the flashlight (on some models it is activated by double pressing the power button, even if the screen is not working).
- π Connect your smartphone to charging and immediately disconnect β this can reset the power controller.
β οΈ Note: If the Xiaomi battery is swelled or deformed, do not leave the device on charge and do not try to discharge it forcibly.
After the smartphone is completely discharged, it will turn off automatically, but note that a deep discharge can negatively affect the lithium-ion battery, especially if the device remains off for a long time.
Method 5: Removal of the battery (for models with removable battery)
On older Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi 3S, Redmi 4A, Mi 4i), the battery is removable, so it can be physically turned off. This is the most reliable way to turn off, but it requires disassembling the device.
How to remove the battery:
- Remove the back cover (usually it is kept on the latches - put it with a plastic card or a mediator).
- Carefully disconnect the battery plume (if it is connected through the connector) or remove the battery completely.
- Wait 30 to 60 seconds and put the battery back in.
β οΈ Note: On new models (starting with the Redmi Note 5 and later), the battery is non-removable, and trying to remove it without special tools can lead to a battery pack that is not removable:
- π§ Damage to plumes.
- π₯ Short circuit (if you damage the battery).
- β Loss of warranty (if the device is still under warranty).
If you are not sure about your skills, it is better to contact a service center. The cost of removing the battery in most workshops does not exceed 500-1000 rubles.
π‘
Physically shutting down the battery is the only way to turn off Xiaomi if the screen is not working, the buttons are not responding and software methods are not available. However, this is an extreme measure that can damage the device if it is not performed neatly.
What to do after switching off: diagnosis and repair
After successfully shutting down your smartphone, it's important to understand why the screen stopped working. Here's a quick checklist for diagnosis:
| Symptoms. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The screen is not turned on, but the smartphone vibrates / sounds are there | Damage to the display or matrix plume | Screen replacement (cost: 3000β10000) β½) |
| The screen is working but does not respond to touch. | Failure of the touchscreen or driver | Flashing or replacing the touchscreen (2000β6000) β½) |
| The smartphone does not turn on at all (no vibration, indication) | Discharged battery or damage to board | Checking the charger, diagnostics in the service |
| Screen flashes, artifacts appear | Problems with a graphics chip or firmware | Fastboot flashing or chip replacement |
If you are not sure about the cause of the malfunction, try:
- π Connect your smartphone to charge for 30 minutes β it is possible that the battery is completely discharged.
- π Try to turn the device on in Safe Mode (hold the power button). + turn off).
- π± Connect to a PC and check if the device is detected in Device Manager.
If the screen does not work after a fall or moisture, do not turn on your smartphone - this can aggravate the damage.
