Did you get an old Xiaomi out of the drawer, but it refuses to turn on? Or did the smartphone suddenly die after falling, charging or updating, and only have a black screen or a Mi logo on the screen that hangs? No panic: even if the device is not showing signs of life, you can identify its model in several ways, which is critical for finding firmware, ordering parts or selling parts.
In this article, we will discuss 7 working methods for learning a Xiaomi model without turning it on, from obvious (box, battery) to technical (fastboot commands, PC diagnostics). Each method is illustrated with photos and step-by-step instructions, and at the end you will find an FAQ with answers to frequent questions and a method compatibility table for different series (Redmi, POCO, Mi).
1. Looking for a model on the box or documentation
The easiest way is to inspect the original packaging or documents that were included. Xiaomi boxes show the model in at least 3 places:
- 📦 On the front side - in large font (for example, Redmi Note 10 Pro or POCO X3 NFC).
- 🏷️ On the side sticker - next to the bar code (the model code may be indicated, for example, M2007J22C For the Redmi Note 9 Pro).
- 📄 In the warranty card - in the column "Model" or "Device Name».
If there is no box, check the checks from the store (electronic or paper) — they often prescribe the full name of the model. For example, in the Svyazny or M. Video checks, this field is called "Product".
⚠️ Warning: Be careful with fake boxes! On Chinese replicas (e.g. AliExpress) the model may be incorrectly specified. Check the data with the battery sticker (see next section).
Remove the back cover: model under the battery
If there's no box and the phone is collapsible (not a monolithic case), you can carefully remove the back cover and look at the sticker under the battery.
- 🔢 Model code (e.g, M2101K7AG For the Redmi Note 10).
- 📡 IMEI (A unique identifier that can also be used to determine the model).
- 🔋 Battery model (e.g, BM4B — It's a battery for the Redmi 9).
To remove the lid, you'll need a plastic spatula (or mediator) and a dryer to soften the glue. Carefully tuck the lid on the side of the charging socket -- there's usually less glue. Don't use metal tools to avoid damaging the plumes!
How to remove the cover on monolithic models (Redmi Note 11, POCO F4, etc.)
Example of decryption of the model code:
| Model code | Name of device | Series |
|---|---|---|
| M2007J22C | Redmi Note 9 Pro (Global) | Redmi Note 9 |
| M2101K7AG | Redmi Note 10 (India) | Redmi Note 10 |
| M2004J19C | POCO X3 NFC | POCO X3 |
| M2012K11AG | Mi 10T / Mi 10T Pro | Mi 10 |
3. Determine the model by IMEI (even without the phone)
IMEI is a unique 15-digit code that is assigned to each phone, and it can be recognized even if the smartphone does not turn on:
- 📄 On the box - next to the barcode (field «IMEI» or «IMEI1/IMEI2»).
- 🔋 Under the battery - on the sticker (see previous section).
- 💻 Through PC – if the phone at least somehow reacts to the connection to the USB (is defined as Qualcomm 9008 or «MTK Preloader»).
When the IMEI is known, check the model on one of the services:
- Go to IMEI.info.
- Enter the code in the search box.
- In the results, find the line “Model” or “Device Name”.
💡
If you have two. IMEI (two-way SIM-Check both cards – sometimes they are different modifications of the same model (for example, Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro).
Important: IMEI can be faked on Chinese replicas! If the service shows a model that clearly doesn't match the look of the phone (like an iPhone instead of Xiaomi), your device is a fake.
4.Use Fastboot mode (if the phone reacts to the buttons in any way)
If you press the power button, the phone vibrates, lights up the indicator or goes into boot mode, try running it in Fastboot. This mode allows you to know the model even without fully loading the system.
Instructions:
- Turn off the phone (press the power button for 10-15 seconds).
- Press the Power button + Volume down and hold for 5-10 seconds.
- If there is a bunny in a hat-eared (Fastboot logo) - connect the phone to the PC.
- On your computer, open the Command Prompt (Windows) or Terminal (Mac/Linux) and type: fastboot devices If the device is defined, type: fastboot getvar product The response will be a model code (for example, tucana for Redmi Note 8).
You can decrypt the code of the model in the database Xiaomi Firmware Updater.
- ginkgo → Redmi Note 8
- phoenix → Redmi Note 7
- surya → POCO X3 NFC
☑️ Preparation for work with Fastboot
⚠️ If the phone is not detected after the command of fastboot devices, try another one. USB-port or cable, on some models (POCO F3, Mi 11) requires unlocking the bootloader - without it, commands will not work.
5. Diagnostics via PC: MiFlash program and drivers
If the phone has any response to a USB connection (e.g., it makes a connection sound or is defined as an “Unknown Device”), you can use the official MiFlash utility, which shows the model even on “bricks” (devices with damaged firmware).
Step-by-step:
- Download the MiFlash Tool and install it.
- Connect the phone to the PC in the off state.
- Start MiFlash and press Refresh.
- The list of devices will include a model in COM+ format, port number and device code (e.g. tucana).
If MiFlash doesn’t identify the phone, try installing the drivers manually:
- Open Device Manager (Win + X → Device Manager).
- Find a device with a yellow exclamation point (usually under the "Other Devices" section).
- Right-click → Update the driver → Search on this computer.
- Specify the path to the folder with drivers (they come with MiFlash).
💡
If the phone is defined as a Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008, it means it is in Emergency Firmware (EDL) mode, in which case the model can only be recognized through specialized tools like QFil or MiFlashPro.
Visual identification by external signs
If the phone is completely dead but you have access to a similar working device, you can compare the differences:
- 📏 Sizes and weight - Measure the phone with a ruler and check with the table: Model Sizes (mm) Weight (d) Features Redmi Note 10 Pro 164 × 76.5 × 8.1 193 Camera-island with 4 module POCO X3 Pro 165.3 × 76.8 × 9.4 215 Logo. POCO on the cover, metal body Mi 11 Lite 160.5 × 75.7 × 6.8 157 Thin body, glass back panel
- 🔍 Location of connectors: Below: USB-C + dynamics + The microphone is the majority of the models we have today: 3.5 mm audio jack - there is a Redmi Note 9/10, missing from the Mi 11/12. Side: Slot for SIM + MicroSD is a hybrid of the POCO, redmi.
- 🎨 Color and body material – for example, the Redmi Note 8 Pro was released in the color “Electric Blue”, and the Mi 9 – in the “Holographic Purple».
For accurate identification, use a database of photos on sites like GSMArena – there are detailed photos of each device from different angles.
7. Contact the service center: when nothing helps
If all of these methods do not work, you should contact the Xiaomi service center.
- Find the nearest official service on the Mi website.
- Take it with you: 📄 Phone (even non-working). 🔋 Battery (if removable). 📦 Box or check (if preserved).
determine the model for repair / firmware
In the service, the model will be determined by:
- Special equipment (for example, DC-Phoenix for reading data from a memory chip).
- Databases by serial number or IMEI.
- Visual inspection (experienced masters know the differences even between similar models).
⚠️ Note: In informal services can name the model at random or offer a “diagnostics for 500-1000 rubles.” Official Xiaomi centers are required to provide this information for free – request a written report!
