Preparation for disassembly: what you need to know before the beginning
Disassembling the Xiaomi Redmi 5 is a task that requires precision and the right tools. This model, released in 2017, has a classic design with a non-removable battery and a plastic back cover glued to the body. Before you start, make sure that you really need to disassemble: perhaps the problem can be solved software or through a service center.
If you decide to disassemble the device yourself, remember: Xiaomi warranty is canceled when any opening of the case. There is also a high risk of damage to the plumes, especially the flexible display cable, which is quite fragile in Redmi 5.
It is important to prepare the workplace: a clean desk with good lighting, an antistatic mat (if any) and screw containers.Redmi 5 contains more than 20 small parts, and losing even one screw can lead to unstable work after assembly.
Necessary tools for disassembly
To fully disassemble the Xiaomi Redmi 5, you will need a specialized set of tools. Do not try to do with improvised means - this almost always ends in damage to the body or internal components.
- ๐ง Plastic mediators (2-3 Pc.) - for careful slinging of the lid and plumes
- โ๏ธ Set of screwdrivers (cross-haul) PH00, flat 1.5 mm, five-pointed Y00)
- ๐ฅ Hair dryer or thermo-air station - for softening the glue (temperature) 60-80ยฐC)
- ๐งฒ Magnetic mat or tray - so as not to lose screws
- ๐ Plastic tweezers - to work with plumes and small details
- ๐ Multimeter (optional) โ to check the battery and contacts
Pay special attention to the choice of screwdrivers. The screws in Redmi 5 are of different lengths (from 2.5 to 5 mm), and using the wrong screwdriver can break the slats. If you plan to disassemble the equipment often, invest in a quality set from iFixit or Wiha.
โ ๏ธ Warning: Never use metal mediators or knives to lid the lid! They can damage antenna tracks located around the perimeter of the housing under the plastic panel.
Step 1: Removing the back cover
Start by turning off your phone and retrieving it. SIM-Redmi back cover and memory cards. 5 It's glued around the perimeter, so it takes patience to remove it. 1-2 minutes, keeping the temperature at a level 70ยฐC.
Insert a plastic mediator into the gap between the lid and the body at the headphone jack. Carefully drive the instrument along the edge, gradually separating the lid. The most problematic areas are near the volume buttons and the camera. If the lid does not respond, warm up the area again.
Warm up the edges of the body with a hair dryer (60-80ยฐC)| Use only a plastic mediator | Start from the top edge (headphone connector) | Do not apply excess force to the center of the cover | Mark the location of the antenna contacts
-->
When you take the lid off, you'll see the battery covered with a protective film. Don't try to remove it right away, you'll need to disconnect the battery plume from the motherboard first. Notice the four antenna contacts around the edges, which are easily damaged when you unscrupulously remove the lid.
Step 2: Battery disconnection
The battery in Redmi 5 is one of the most vulnerable elements, with a capacity of 3,300 mAh, and if handled carelessly, it can swell or even ignite. Before you go on, make sure that the phone is turned off for at least 10 minutes, which minimizes the risk of short circuit.
Take the protective film off the battery, and underneath it, you'll find a little white connector connecting the battery to the motherboard, and you'll be able to gently tuck it in with a plastic mediator, pull it up, and if the connector doesn't respond, don't force it, make sure the glue holds it.
| Action. | Tool. | Risks. |
|---|---|---|
| Removal of protective film | Tweezers or nails | Damage to battery insulation |
| Unplugging the battery connector | Plastic mediator | Contact break on the board |
| Testing voltage | Multimeter (optional) | Short circuit with incorrect measurement |
| Battery recovery | Plastic shovel + isopropyl alcohol | Battery puncture or bloating |
โ ๏ธ Warning: If the battery is blown up (visible by the raised cover or the deformation of the screen), do not try to remove it yourself.
Once the connector is disconnected, you can start removing the battery, and it's glued to the body, so you can put a plastic blade on it and pull it up gently. If the glue is too strong, drop a few drops of isopropyl alcohol (90%+) under the battery, which will help dissolve the adhesive layer.
Step 3: Dismantling the motherboard
The Redmi 5 motherboard is attached to the middle frame with ten screws of different lengths. Remember the location of each screw, when assembled, their entanglement can lead to damage to the board. We recommend taking a picture of their location or spreading them on a magnetic mat in order.
After you unscrew the screws, gently tuck the board into a plastic blade on the side of the charging connector, which is held on a few latches and a display plume. Don't pull the board by force, first disconnect all the plumes:
- ๐ฑ Display plume (the widest, at the top)
- ๐ Dynamics and microphone plume (bottom)
- ๐ถ Antenna cables (sides, glued)
Pay special attention to the plume of the display. In Redmi 5, it consists of three parts (sensor, screen, backlight) and is extremely sensitive to mechanical damage. If the screen does not work after assembly or artifacts appear, the plume is likely damaged.
How to check the performance of the display plume?
Step 4: Disassemble the front panel and display
The front panel of the Redmi 5 consists of a display, touch glass and a metal frame. In this model, the display is glued to the frame, so it requires special care to replace it. If your goal is to replace the glass or display, you better use a special suction cup for the screens.
Heat the edge of the display with a hair dryer (temperature no higher than 80ยฐC) for 2-3 minutes. With a suction cup, raise the glass 1-2 mm, then insert the plastic mediators into the gap. Carefully guide them around the perimeter, separating the adhesive layer. Don't try to remove the glass immediately - this can damage the plumes.
After the separation of the glass, you will see:
- ๐ฒ Display module (stick to frame)
- ๐ Home button (in some versions with fingerprint sensor)
- ๐ค Upper microphone and light sensor
- ๐ Auditory speaker (stick to frame)
โ ๏ธ Note: In Redmi 5, the Home button is connected to the board in a separate loop. If you are planning to replace it, be prepared for the fact that the fingerprint sensor may stop working - Xiaomi ties it to the motherboard at the software level.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Even experienced craftsmen sometimes make mistakes when disassembling the Redmi 5, and here are the most common problems and ways to prevent them:
- ๐ง The screws are ripped off, use magnetic-tipped screwdrivers, and don't use excessive force. WD-40.
- ๐ฅ Train damage โ always pull the connectors from the edges, not in the middle. The display plume in Redmi 5 is particularly fragile.
- ๐ Short circuit โ before working with the board, disconnect the battery and use an antistatic bracelet.
- ๐ฑ Cracked glass โ do not heat the display above 80ยฐC and do not use metal tools to tamper with it.
- ๐งฒ Lost screws โ spread them out in order on a magnetic mat or mark with tape.
Another common mistake is the wrong assembly, and after replacing the components, many people forget:
- Check the tightness of seals (especially important if the phone fell into the water)
- Connect all antenna cables (the absence of these cables leads to a bad signal)
- Tighten the screws with the right force (tightened screws can damage the board)
1. whether the battery is connected (often forget to connect the connector).
2. whether the display plumes and power buttons are correctly installed.
3. is there a circuit on the motherboard (look for the subject of darkening).
