Why the Mi Max 2 Battery Fails and When to Change It
The Xiaomi Mi Max 2, released in 2017, is equipped with a 5,300mAh non-removable battery, one of the largest at launch. However, even such batteries do not last forever: after 3-4 years of active use, their capacity drops by 30-50%, and battery life is reduced by 2-3 times. If your Mi Max 2 discharges in a few hours, turns off at 20-30% charge or overheats during charging, these are sure signs of battery degradation.
The manufacturer says that lithium-polymer batteries are designed for 500-800 charging cycles, but the real life depends on the operating conditions. Frequent overheating, the use of non-original chargers or deep discharges up to 0% accelerate wear. Unlike the flagships of Xiaomi in recent years, the Mi Max 2 does not have a charging optimization function, so the battery wears out faster.
When is it time to change the battery?
- π The smartphone keeps a charge of less than 4-5 hours with moderate use.
- π₯ The body is noticeably heated in the battery area (even without load).
- β‘ The device shuts down at 15-40% charge or βjumpsβ the percentage of the battery.
- π Settings menu β Battery β The state of the battery is shown capacity below 70% of the original.
Important: if the battery is swollen (the body is deformed or the screen βsteps awayβ from the frame), it is dangerous to operate the smartphone - the risk of short circuit and fire!
What battery to choose for Xiaomi Mi Max 2: original vs analogues
The original battery for the Mi Max 2 has an MB-J20 and a capacity of 5300 mAh. However, after 2020, Xiaomi officially stopped supplying spare parts for this model, so finding a βnativeβ battery is almost impossible.
| Type of battery | Capacity | Pluses | Cons | Price (2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original (b/u) | 5,300 mAh | Guaranteed compatibility, long service life | Hard to find, possible wear, high price | 2500β4000 β½ |
| Analogue (quality) | 5000β5500 mAh | Low price, availability, often exceeds the original capacity | Low quality risk, possible calibration problems | 800β1500 β½ |
| Increased capacity | 6,000-7,000 mAh | Longer holds charge, suitable for active users | May not fit into the body, overheating, rapid degradation | 1200β2000 β½ |
When choosing an analogue, pay attention to:
- π Manufacturer: Reliable brands β Baseus, Remax, Patona (avoid no-name with AliExpress without reviews!).
- π Certification: there must be a marking CE ROHS.
- π§ Connector: Mi Max 2 has a battery connector β JST 1.0 2P (Donβt confuse it with other Xiaomi models!).
- βοΈ Weight: The original battery weighs ~120 g - too light analogue most likely low quality.
β οΈ Attention: Batteries with increased capacity (6000)+ mAh) often have a thickened case, which may not close the back cover!

Preparing for replacement: security tools and measures
Replacing the battery with the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 requires care - one wrong step can damage the plumes or screen.
Torx T3 and T4 screwdriver (for case screws)
Plastic mediator or guitar mediator (to separate the body)
Screen suction cup (optional, but simplifies the process)
Tweezers with thin ends (to disconnect plumes)
Dryer or thermo-air station (for softening the glue)
New battery with double-sided tape
Alcohol or isopropyl alcohol (to clean contacts)
-->
You will also need an antistatic bracelet (or at least a grounded metal surface) to avoid static discharge, which can damage the motherboard. If the bracelet is not available, periodically touch the metal parts of the body with your hand, this will reduce the risk.
Work on a clean, well-lit desk, and we recommend that you videotape it or take pictures of it every step of the way, and that you can put your smartphone back together.
- π The battery plume is fragile and easily torn.
- π± Flexible screen cable β do not pull it when removing the front panel.
- π§ Screws - in Mi Max 2 they are of different lengths, do not confuse when Assembly!
β οΈ Warning: If you've never taken your smartphones apart, practice on an unnecessary device or watch the video manual to the end. In the Mi Max 2, the screen is glued to the body, and if you're not careful, you can damage the touchscreen!
Step-by-step: how to remove the old battery
The process of replacing the battery is three steps: disassembling the body, disconnecting the old battery, and installing a new one, starting with the hardest part: removing the back cover.
Step 1: Removing the back cover
1. Turn off your smartphone and remove the tray for SIM-map.
2. Heat the hair dryer edge of the back cover (temperature ~60 Β° C) for 2-3 minutes - this will soften the glue. Keep the hair dryer at a distance of 5-10 cm, so as not to overheat the plastic.
3. Put a plastic mediator in the gap between the body and the screen at the charging connector. Carefully swipe it around the perimeter, separating the lid. If you feel resistance, warm up the problem area again.
4. Once the lid has separated, put it aside. Be careful, it's got a fingerprint scanner plume stuck to it!
Step 2: Battery disconnection
1 Unscrew 10 Torx T3 screws fixing the metal plate above the battery.
2. Carefully gently slap the plate and take it off, and underneath it you'll see the battery plume glued to the motherboard.
3. Unplug the plume with tweezers or a plastic spatula. Don't pull the wires! Better plug the connector.
4. Now you have to take out the battery itself, and it's glued to the body with double-sided tape, pick it up from any edge, and slowly pull it up, and if the tape doesn't respond, put alcohol under the battery, and it will dissolve the glue.
What to do if the battery is blown?
Step 3: Cleaning the hull
After removing the old battery:
- π§Ή Remove the residues of the glue from the case (alcohol or acetone can be used).
- π Check the contacts on the motherboard - if they are oxidized, clean them with a stripper or alcohol.
- π Make sure the new battery is fit for size (length) Γ width Γ thickness: 150 Γ 75 Γ 3,5 mm).

Do not turn on your smartphone without a connected battery β it can damage the power controller!
Installation of a new battery and assembly of a smartphone
Now, back to the build, and the key here is to remember to plug all the plumes in and secure the battery properly.
Step 1: Connecting a new battery
1. Remove the protective film from the contacts of the new battery.
2. Gently connect the battery plume to the motherboard. Make sure the connector is latched β if the contact is not tight, the smartphone will not turn on.
3. Stick the battery to a double-sided tape (usually included). If there is no tape, use a thin layer of heat adhesive, but don't overdo it - the excess can damage the plumes.
Step 2: Checking the performance
Before final assembly:
- π Connect the charger and check if charging is going on (the indicator should light up).
- π± Turn on your smartphone (hold the power button for 10-15 seconds). If the screen doesn't respond, check the battery plume connection.
- π Settings menu β Battery make sure the system detects a new battery (can show 0%, that's normal - calibration is needed).
Step 3: Assembly of the body
1. Place a metal plate in place and twist all 10 screws (don't pull!).
2. Connect the fingerprint scanner plume to the back cover.
3. warm up the hair dryer edge of the body (so that the glue is better grasped) and gently press the cover, starting from the bottom.
4. Place the smartphone under the press (for example, put a heavy book on top) for 10-15 minutes so that the glue sticks well.
β οΈ Warning: If the smartphone doesn't turn on after assembly, check: Connecting the battery plume (frequently an incomplete plug is a mistake); Integrity of the flexible screen cable (it's easy to damage it when disassembling); Short circuit (try turning off the battery and reconnect it).
Calibration of the battery after replacement
The new battery may show an incorrect charge level, such as jumping from 50% to 20% or running out quickly, because the Mi Max 2 power controller doesnβt know the real capacity of the new battery.
- Full discharge: Use your smartphone before automatically turning it off (do not turn it on until it is discharged to 0%).
- Charging up to 100%: connect the original charger and wait for full charge (the indicator should show 100%).
- Additional charging: without turning off charging, turn on your smartphone and wait until the charge level is 100% again.
- Repeat the cycle 2-3 times until the percentage of charge stabilizes.
If the problem persists after calibration, try resetting the battery settings via the engineering menu:
- Enter the dialer code: ##4636##.
- Select the Battery Information item.
- Click Reset Battery Stats (if you donβt have one, use the AccuBattery app to calibrate).
π‘
After replacing the battery, avoid quick charging (Quick Charge) in the first 3-5 cycles β this will help to extend the life of the new battery.
Frequent Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Even experienced tycoons sometimes make mistakes when replacing the battery, and here are the most common problems and solutions.
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The smartphone is off. | Unconnected battery or screen plume | Disassemble the body and check all connectors |
| Quick discharge after replacement | Poor battery or lack of calibration | Conduct 2-3 cycles of full discharge / charging |
| Battery overheating | Poor contact or defect in the new battery | Check the density of the battery to the body |
| The fingerprint scanner is not working. | The plume is damaged or incorrectly connected | Unplug the cover and reconnect the plume. |
If after replacing the smartphone began to reboot or βglutchβ, perhaps damaged the motherboard, in this case, it is better to contact the service center.
