Xiaomi Redmi 9 is one of the most popular budget smartphones, but its speaker often suffers from dust, moisture and small debris. If you notice that the interlocutor has become hard to hear, the sound is distorted or the speaker is completely βhacklingβ β the problem is pollution. 80% of the time, cleaning the speaker solves the problem without going to the service center.
In this article, you will find 5 proven cleaning methods, from the simplest (with a toothpick) to the most advanced (ultrasonic bath), we will analyze which materials are safe for Redmi 9 and which can damage the speaker membrane, and you will learn how to diagnose a malfunction and when cleaning will not help.
All methods have been tested on Redmi 9 (M2003J15SC, M2003J15SS) but will also be suitable for other Redmi/POCO series smartphones with a similar speaker design. If the problem persists after cleaning, there is a checklist at the end of the article to check for software reasons.
Signs of a contaminated speaker: how to know that it is time to clean
Before you start cleaning, make sure that the problem is with the dynamics, not the microphone or system settings.
- π The sound became quieter than usual (at maximum volume, the interlocutor is barely audible).
- π There was a wheezing or crackling, especially at high frequencies (the voice sounds like a barrelΒ»).
- π§ After getting moisture, the speaker began to βbumbleβ or completely stopped working.
- π«οΈ Visible particles of dust or debris in the speaker grille (can be viewed with a flashlight).
- π΅ The sound disappears when the phone is tilted (garbage moves inside the case).
If one of the items matches, the speaker needs to be cleaned, but first, rule out software failures:
- Check the volume in Settings β Sound.
- Turn off the "Do Not Disturb" or "Silent Mode" modes.
- Call another phone and compare the sound through the speaker and headset.
Important: On Redmi 9, the speaker is located at the top of the screen (near the front camera), not on the bottom end panel, as many flagships do.
Method 1: Dry brushing with a toothpick or soft brush
The safest method for beginners is mechanical cleaning without liquids, suitable if the speaker is filled with dust or small pile (for example, from clothes in your pocket).
You'll need:
- πͺ₯ Plastic or wooden toothpick (not metallic!).
- ποΈ Soft art brush (size 0-2) or clean toothbrush.
- π¦ Lantern (for illumination).
Step-by-step:
- Turn off your phone to avoid accidental tapping.
- Bring the flashlight to the speaker at an angle - so you can see the garbage better.
- Carefully walk along the speaker grille along (not across!) the slits. Movements should be light, without pressure.
- If the rubbish is not removed by the brush, use a toothpick: with a blunted end, put the particles and extract them. Don't pick deep - the speaker membrane is located 1-2 mm from the grille!
Do not use metal objects (needles, pins)
Do not blow with your mouth - saliva can get inside
Don't press the bar with force.
Do not use a vacuum cleaner (may damage the membrane)-->
β οΈ Warning: If you cleaned your toothpick and it got worse, you probably damaged your membrane.
Method 2: Cleaning with Scotch (for small garbage)
This is effective if the dynamics are small particles of dust or pile that can not be removed by toothpick, Scotch acts as a sticky trap for garbage.
Use only paint or stationery tape, which is less sticky and leaves no traces. Avoid packaging tape (may damage the grille covering).
Algorithm of action:
- Cut a strip of scotch 3-4 mm wide and 2-3 cm long.
- Carefully apply the sticky side to the grille speaker (do not press!).
- Hold 2-3 seconds and slowly remove the garbage.
- Repeat 2-3 times, each time using a new piece of scotch.
For better effect, you can preheat the speaker with a hairdryer (at minimum power, from a distance of 10 cm) - this will soften the sticky deposits.
What if Scotch doesn't help?
Method 3: Wet cleaning (alcohol, peroxide, distilled water)
If the speaker is full of sticky dirt, soda or cosmetics, dry cleaning won't help. It needs liquids, but it's important to choose safe solutions that won't damage the electronics.
Allowed liquids for Redmi 9:
| Fluid | Concentration | Advantages | Risks. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Isopropyl alcohol | 90% and above | It quickly evaporates, does not leave divorces. | Can dissolve the glue on the grille |
| Hydrogen peroxide | 3% | Eating up organic pollution | Oxidizes metal contacts |
| Distilled water | β | Safe for electronics | Long evaporates, risk of corrosion |
| Special cleaners (e.g. WD-40 Specialist) | Ready solution | No current, it dries quickly. | Expensive, not always on hand |
Step-by-step:
- Turn off the phone and remove it. SIM-memory-card.
- Apply 1-2 drops of liquid to the cotton swab (not the speaker!).
- Gently wipe the speaker grille without pressing. Movement from center to edge.
- Wait 10-15 minutes until the liquid has completely evaporated.
- Blow the speaker with dry air (dryer at minimum power or a can of compressed air).
β οΈ Warning: Never pour liquid directly into the speaker - even distilled water can cause contact corrosion. Also avoid acetone-based products (solvents, varnish removal fluid) - they destroy plastic.
π‘
If you don't have alcohol on hand, you can use vodka (a fortress of at least 40%), apply it to a cotton swab and wipe the speaker immediately, the alcohol will quickly evaporate before damaging the electronics.
Method 4: Ultrasonic cleaning (for advanced cases)
If the speaker is completely clogged with dirt or moisture (like after bathing your phone) and previous methods havenβt worked, an ultrasound bath will help, which requires disassembling the phone, so itβs only suitable for power users.
What you need:
- π§ Set of screwdrivers for Xiaomi (cross-haired) PH00, spatula).
- π§ͺ Ultrasonic bath (can be bought on AliExpress for 1000-1500) β½).
- π§ Distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
- 𧻠A hairless napkin.
How to clean:
- Disassemble the phone with the back cover and battery removed (instructions for Redmi 9 are available on YouTube).
- Disconnect the speaker plume and remove it from the body.
- Place the speaker in an ultrasonic bath with distilled water for 30 to 60 seconds.
- Take out, shake off the water and dry for at least 24 hours in a warm place (such as a battery).
- Put the phone back together.
This method removes even microscopic particles, but has risks:
- β Damage to the plume during disassembly.
- β Corrosion of contacts if it is not drying well.
- β Loss of leakage (if the Redmi 9 had factory moisture protection).
π‘
Ultrasonic cleaning is a last resort, and if you're not sure about your phone-disassembly skills, you'd better take it to service. The cost of replacing the speaker with a Redmi 9 is about 500 to 800. β½, It's cheaper than the risk of damage to the fee.
Method 5: Software Diagnostics (if cleaning didn't help)
If after all the manipulations, the speaker still doesn't work, the problem may not be the pollution, but the software failure.
- π Make sure that the βIn your pocketβ mode is not activated (Settings) β Lock screen β Mode βIn the pocket").
- π Go to Settings. β Special facilities β Improve sound and turn off all filters.
- π± Restart your phone in Safe Mode (click the power button) β Β«Safe Mode. If the sound appears, the third-party app is to blame.
- π Reset the sound settings to factory (Settings) β System system β Resetting settings β Resetting the sound settings).
If nothing helps, run a hardware test:
- Type the code ##4636## on your phone keyboard.
- Select the item "Hardware Testing".
- Take the speaker test (Audio β Speaker Test).
If the test shows an error, the speaker is faulty and needs to be replaced. On the Redmi 9, this is a typical problem after falls or moisture.
What not to do when cleaning the speaker
Some folk methods can irrevocably damage the speaker or the entire phone, and this is strictly forbidden:
- π« Blow the speaker with your mouth β saliva contains salts that cause corrosion.
- π« Using a vacuum cleaner creates static electricity and can tear out the membrane.
- π« Pour water or alcohol directly into the speaker - even distilled water conducts current.
- π« Clean with a needle or pin - the metal scratches the membrane and deforms the grille.
- π« Dry with a hair dryer at high temperature - plastic lattice can deform.
Also avoid household chemicals (soap, shampoo, washing glasses) β they leave a film that clogs the speaker even more.
