The headphone jack on Xiaomi smartphones (including the Redmi, POCO and Mi series) is one of the most vulnerable parts of the device. Over time, the 3.5 mm audio jack gets dust, pile from pockets, and sometimes even moisture, which leads to problems: headphones are no longer defined, sound disappears in one ear or wheezing. In 80% of cases, it is the contaminated contact that is to blame, not the breakage of the headphones or smartphone.
Cleaning the connector is a procedure that can be done on your own, but it requires care. On Xiaomi models with a hybrid connector (such as the Xiaomi 12T Pro or Redmi Note 11 Pro+), improper cleaning can damage the charging contacts if they are combined with an audio connector. In this article, proven methods of removing dirt, tools that will not damage the smartphone, and instructions for different types of contamination (dust, oxidation, liquid ingress).
Signs of a contaminated connector: when it's time to clean
Not always problems with sound are associated with the connector, but there are characteristic symptoms that indicate precisely its contamination:
- π Headphones are determined only at a certain position of the plug (for example, if it is pressed or tilted).
- π§ The sound disappears in one ear or periodically hangs".
- π The smartphone does not recognize headphones at all, although they work on other devices.
- π± A system notification appears "Hearphones are connected / disconnected" without a reason.
- π The sound becomes quieter, wheezing or background noise appear.
If at least one of these signs is present, check the headphones on another device first. If they work normally, the Xiaomi connector is a problem. On USB-C models (such as the Xiaomi 13 or POCO F5), similar symptoms may indicate a charging port contamination if it is used to connect the headphones via an adapter.
β οΈ Note: On smartphones Xiaomi with IR-Do not use metal cleaning tools near the audio jack (e.g. Redmi Note 10 Pro) β they can damage the remote control sensor.
What not to do when cleaning the connector
Before you start cleaning, remember the prohibited methods that can disable the connector:
- π« Blow the connector with your mouth. Saliva contains moisture and salts that accelerate the oxidation of contacts.
- π« Use toothpicks or matches, and the tree can break inside the connector, and the sulfur can oxidize the contacts.
- π« Clean with wet wipes or cotton wool. moisture remains on the contacts and leads to corrosion.
- π« Use aggressive solvents (acetone, gasoline, alcohol concentration above 70%).
- π« Picking the connector with a needle or pin, which deforms the contacts, especially on models with spring petals (for example, Xiaomi Mi). A3).
Also, you should not use a vacuum cleaner, which can create static electricity that will damage the chips of your smartphone. If you have previously tried to clean the connector with the wrong means, before re-proceding, let it dry for at least 12 hours.
Preparation for cleaning: tools and safety measures
For safe cleaning, you will need:
| Tool. | What do you need? | Where to find it. |
|---|---|---|
| Toothpick with a plastic or silicone tip | Removal of large dust and pile particles | Shops of household goods, pharmacies |
| Alcohol wipes (70% isopropyl alcohol) | Cleaning contacts from oxidation and fat | Pharmacies, electronics stores |
| Cylinder with compressed air (for cleaning equipment) | Blowing dust from deep areas of the connector | Computer shops |
| Wadding on a plastic stick (not wooden!) | Cleaning contacts carefully without risking damage | Pharmacies, cosmetic stores |
| Lupe or flashlight | Checking the cleaning result | Tool shops, smartphone with flashlight |
Before cleaning, turn off the smartphone and remove SIM-card if the headphone jack is located next to the slot (as on Redmi) 9A). This will prevent short circuits from getting moisture, and prepare a well-lit place, such as a table near a window or under a desk lamp.

Method 1: Dry cleaning (dust, pile, small garbage)
This method is suitable if there is dust or pile in the connector, but there is no trace of oxidation or liquid, and can be used prophylactically every 3-6 months.
Steps:
- Take a plastic toothpick or silicone spatula (for example, to clean the ears in children).
- Carefully, without pressing, run the inner walls of the connector, collecting garbage.
- Use a compressed air cylinder: blow out the dust with short presses (no more than 1 second) and hold the balloon vertically to avoid liquid (some cylinders have it).
- Repeat the procedure with a toothpick to remove the remaining debris.
For models with a hybrid connector (such as the Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite, where audio and charging are combined), avoid heavy airflow - it can drive dust deeper into the charging port. After cleaning, check the connector for debris with a flashlight.
π‘
If there is no compressed air at hand, you can use a rubber pear (for example, for enemas) - it creates a strong enough flow to blow out dust, but will not damage the contacts.
Method 2: Wet cleaning (oxidation, fat, traces of liquid)
If the connector contacts are darkened, greenish, or show signs of sweat/liquid, wet cleaning will be required, and this method will also help if dry cleaning is not effective.
Instructions:
- Moisten the cotton swab (plastic-based!) in 70% isopropyl alcohol. Press the excess liquid so that the wand is wet, but not wet.
- Carefully scroll the stick inside the connector, touching all the contacts. Don't press hard - on Xiaomi models, the contacts are often thin and can bend.
- Let the connector dry for at least 30 minutes (preferably 1 hour). Do not use a hair dryer or other heating appliances!
- Repeat dry cleaning (method 1) to remove any dirt left over from the alcohol.
To remove strong oxidation (green or black plaque), you can use an eraser (washing gum). Gently rub the contacts with them, then remove the crumbs with a dry cotton swab, a method that is suitable for older models (for example, Xiaomi Mi 5), where the contacts are more massive.
β οΈ Attention: On smartphones with protection IP53 (For example, Redmi Note 11 Pro) after wet cleaning, check the tightness of the connector. If the sealing gum is damaged, the moisture protection no longer works.
Method 3: Cleaning with ultrasound (for complex contaminants)
If the connector is contaminated with resin (for example, from smoking), paint or is heavily oxidized, and mechanical cleaning does not help, you can use an ultrasonic bath, which is suitable for advanced users, as it requires disassembling the smartphone.
What you need:
- π§ Ultrasonic bath (you can buy an inexpensive model for cleaning jewelry).
- π§ Distilled water or isopropyl alcohol (90% and higher).
- π© Screwdriver for disassembling the smartphone (for example, T3 or T5 Xiaomi).
- 𧲠Plastic tweezers.
Process:
- Take apart the smartphone, remove the motherboard, and unplug the headphone jack (it is usually soldered or connected through a plume).
- Place the connector in an ultrasonic bath with isopropyl alcohol for 10-15 seconds.
- Remove the part, dry it for 24 hours in a dry place (you can use silica gel).
- Put together your smartphone and check your performance.
This method is effective, but it is risky: if you disassemble correctly, you can damage the plumes or chips. If you are not sure of your skills, you should contact the service center. On soldered models (for example, Xiaomi Mi 9), self-cleaning with ultrasound can lead to detachment of contacts.
What to do if the connector does not work after ultrasonic cleaning?
Method 4: Clean the connector on USB-C models (without 3.5 mm)
Many new Xiaomi smartphones (e.g., Xiaomi 13 Pro, POCO F4 GT) do not have a classic 3.5 mm jack β headphones connect via USB-C or Bluetooth. If the sound is lost when using wired headphones with an adapter, the problem may be contamination of the USB-C port.
Features of USB-C cleaning:
- π Use a plastic or wooden toothpick β metal objects can close charging contacts.
- π§ For wet cleaning, take alcohol and a thin brush (for example, for drawing).
- β‘ After cleaning, check the charging β if the smartphone is not charging, then the contacts are damaged.
On fast-charging models (such as the Xiaomi 12S Ultra with 120W), be especially careful: damage to the contacts can disable the power controller. If the headphone adapter doesn't work after cleaning, try connecting it to another device - perhaps the problem is with the adapter itself.
When cleaning will not help: signs of breakage connector
If there are problems after cleaning, it is possible that the connector is mechanically damaged or malfunctioning.
- π§ The connector is shattered - the headphone plug dangles or falls out.
- π₯ The contacts show melted areas (short circuit evidence).
- π οΈ The smartphone does not see any headphones, even new ones.
- π When connecting headphones, the smartphone is rebooted or turned off.
On Xiaomi models with a hybrid audio jack (for example, Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G), the breakdown can affect charging, in which case repairs will cost more, since the entire module needs to be replaced.
| Smartphone model | Cost of plug replacement (β½) | The cost of replacing a hybrid connector (β½) |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi 9A / 9C | 800β1 200 | β |
| POCO X3 Pro | 1 000β1 500 | β |
| Xiaomi 11T / 11T Pro | β | 2 500β3 500 |
| Redmi Note 10 Pro | 1 200β1 800 | β |
If the smartphone is warranty, do not disassemble it yourself - this will void the warranty Xiaomi.

Before replacing the connector, check if the problem is software. To do this, reboot the smartphone in Safe Mode (hold the power button β βReboot Safe Modeβ). If this mode is running, the application or firmware is to blame, not the hardware.
