Clogged connectors or headphones in Xiaomi smartphones are a problem that every second user faces: Dust, pocket pile, sweat or occasional splashes of liquid gradually worsen the sound quality: wheezing, bass disappears, or one ear stops working at all. But before you carry the phone to the service center, try cleaning the earphone yourself.
In this article, we will discuss 5 proven cleaning methods, from the simplest (with toothpicking) to advanced (ultrasonic bath for complex contaminants). Particular attention will be paid to models with a 3.5 mm connector (Redmi Note 10 Pro, POCO X3 Pro) and wireless headphones (Xiaomi AirDots, Buds 4 Pro).
Signs of clogging headphones in the Xiaomi phone
Before you start cleaning, make sure that the problem is the contamination, not the software failure or damage to the cable.
- π Muffled sound β basses disappear, high frequencies become quieter.
- π΅ Wheezing or crackling when playing music, especially at high volume.
- π One ear is not working or the sound is only coming from one side.
- π Headphones are defined, but the sound is interrupted (a typical problem for Redmi). 9A and POCO M3).
- π§ Moisture under the mesh speaker (seen in bright light).
If the sound is completely lost, first check the settings: go to Settings β Sound β Sound quality and turn off the Adaptive Sound function β sometimes it conflicts with the headphones. Also try to connect other headphones: if the problem persists, the jack in the phone is clogged, not the headphones themselves.
β οΈ Warning: If the sound is not restored after cleaning, do not try to stick metal objects (needles, paper clips) into the connector.
Method 1: Dry cleaning with a toothpick or cotton swab
The safest method for 3.5 mm jack and mesh speaker in wired headphones. Suitable for Xiaomi models with classic audio jack: Redmi Note 8 Pro, Mi A3, POCO F1.
You'll need:
- πͺ₯ Wooden toothpick (not metallic!).
- 𧻠Cotton swab (better with a plastic rod).
- π¦ Lantern (for lighting the connector).
Step-by-step:
- Turn off the phone and remove the headphones.
- Hold the flashlight to the connector, so you will see the accumulation of dust.
- Carefully swipe the toothpick inside the connector to push the dirt out.
- Wet the cotton swab in an alcohol solution (70%) and wipe the contacts of the connector.
- To clean the speaker mesh, use a dry cotton swab, slightly rotating it.

This method removes up to 80% of the dust, but it can't handle stuck dirt or oxidation of contacts. If the sound doesn't improve after cleaning, move on to the next method.
Method 2: Compressed air cleaning (a balloon or vacuum cleaner)
Ideal for deep cleaning of the connector and removal of dust from the speakers Xiaomi AirDots or Buds 3 Pro. Compressed air blows out dirt particles without damaging the internal parts.
What to use:
- π¨ Compressed air cylinder (for cleaning equipment).
- π§Ή A vacuum cleaner with a narrow nozzle (at minimum power!).
How to clean:
- Keep the canister vertically (so that no liquid leaks).
- Direct the air stream into the connector with short pulses (2-3 seconds).
- For headphone speakers, use a minimum distance (5-7 cm) to avoid damaging the membrane.
- After processing, turn the phone downwards and leicht tap on the case to make the dirt fall out.
| Method | Suitable for | Pluses | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toothpick/cotton stick | 3.5mm connector, speaker grid | Safe, does not require the purchase of tools | Does not remove deep dirt |
| Compressed air | Connector, wireless headphones | Removes dust from hard-to-reach places | Risk of damage under high pressure |
| Alcohol (70%) | Connector contacts, headphone case | Solves fat and oxides | You can't pour a speaker inside. |
β οΈ Warning: Never use a hair dryer instead of compressed air! hot stream can melt plastic jack parts or damage the microphone in headphones.

Method 3: Ultrasonic Bath for Complex Contaminants
If Xiaomiβs headphones have been in a dusty place for a long time or have been exposed to liquid, conventional methods may not help, in which case an ultrasonic bath will save you β it removes dirt at the molecular level without damaging the electronics.
What do you need?
- π Ultrasonic bath (you can buy for 1,500-3000) β½).
- π§ Distilled water or isopropyl alcohol (90%).
- β± Timer.
Instructions:
- Remove silicone earbuds from headphones (if any).
- Pour alcohol (not water!) into the bath for 2-3 cm.
- Place the headphones in the bathtub basket with speakers up.
- Set the time - 3-5 minutes at a temperature of 30-40 Β° C.
- After processing, dry the headphones for 24 hours in a dry place.
This method is suitable for Xiaomi AirDots Pro, Buds 4 and other models with waterproof IPX4 and higher. For wired headphones with fabric wool, ultrasound can not be used - it will damage the insulation.
What happens if you use water instead of alcohol?
Method 4: Clean Type-C connector (for models without 3.5 mm)
Xiaomi smartphones without audio jack (Redmi K50, Xiaomi 12T, POCO F4) use Type-C to connect headphones. its cleaning requires special care, as the contacts are thinner and denser.
Tools:
- 𧲠Plastic shoulder blade (for SIM-map).
- π Lupa (for accuracy).
- 𧴠Alcohol napkins.
How to clean:
- Turn off the phone and remove the cable.
- Slightly shovel the upper part of the connector - there accumulates the most dust.
- Wipe the contacts with a napkin soaked in alcohol, moving along the connector (not across!).
- Blow the connector with compressed air.
If the headphones are still not recognized after cleaning, check the settings β Settings β Additional β Developer β USB debugging. Sometimes the failure occurs due to a conflict of data transfer protocols.

Before cleaning Type-C, check if the contacts are bent. If so, don't try to straighten them yourself, it can lead to short circuits.
Method 5: Software Diagnostics Before Cleaning
Before you take apart your headphones or pick up the jack, make sure it's not the software that's the problem. Xiaomi smartphones have built-in audio checker tools.
How to check:
- Open the Phone app and dial ##4636##.
- Select Phone Information β Check the speaker.
- If the sound is only in one headphone, the problem is in the hardware.
Also try to reset the sound settings:
Settings β Sound β Additional β Resetting sound settingsIf the problem persists after reset, proceed with physical cleaning.
What not to do when cleaning headphones Xiaomi
Some folk methods can permanently damage headphones or audio jacks.
- π« Blow the connector with your mouth β saliva contains acids that oxidize the contacts.
- π« Use needles or pins β they scratch the contact coating.
- π« Pour alcohol or water directly into the speaker β the liquid stays inside and spoils the membrane.
- π« Cleaning headphones in the on state - the risk of short circuit.
- π« Dry with a hair dryer or on a battery - overheating deforms the plastic.
If you accidentally fill your headphones with liquid, don't turn them on for at least 48 hours. Put them in a silica gel bag (from a shoe box) - it will absorb moisture.
π‘
The most common reason for headphones to break after cleaning is mechanical damage to the membrane. Never press the speaker grid or use abrasive materials.
