Have you noticed that the sound in your Xiaomi has become quieter or wheezing? The reason most often lies in the clogging of the speakers β dust, villi from your pocket or even small debris can significantly worsen the sound quality, especially for models with a lower speaker (for example, the Redmi Note 12 or POCO X5 Pro), which often comes into contact with the surfaces of the table or bag.
Speaker cleaning is a task that you can do without having to go to a service center, but it's important to be careful: wrong actions can damage the speaker grid or even the sound membrane itself. In this article, we'll look at 5 proven ways, from the simplest to the deeper cleaning, and also tell you what you can't do.
Before you start, check if the pollution is really the problem, and then you turn on loud music or video and put your ear on the speaker, and if the sound is distorted or if you hear extraneous noises (like "bubbling"), then you have to act, and if the sound is just quiet, maybe the settings are to blame, we'll mention that too.
Why are the speakers clogged in Xiaomi smartphones?
The design of the speakers in Xiaomi (as in most smartphones) involves a protective mesh that lets in sound, but theoretically should trap dust. However, in practice this does not work perfectly.
- πͺοΈ Dust and pile β get through the holes of the mesh, especially if the phone is often lying on soft surfaces (sofa, bed) or carried in a pocket with keys.
- π¦ Humidity and condensation β even if the phone hasnβt sunk, microdrops of moisture from the air can settle on the membrane, attracting dust.
- π Small debris β crumbs, grains of sand or hair penetrate the speaker when used carelessly (for example, while eating).
- π Static electricity β attracts dust particles to the grid, especially in dry rooms.
Models with stereo speakers (such as the Xiaomi 13 Pro or Redmi K60) are less likely to clog, as the top speaker usually has less contact with surfaces, while the bottom speaker suffers more often β its holes are larger for better sound, but debris gets there more easily.
Fun fact: lab tests have shown that up to 15-20 mg of dust and debris accumulates in the dynamics of an average smartphone during a year of active use β enough to make the sound 30-40% quieter, and users often confuse clogging with software problems (for example, the wrong equalizer settings).
Preparation for cleaning: what will be needed?
Before you start, prepare the tools you need, most of which will be at home, but some of which you will have to buy (for example, isopropyl alcohol or a special brush).
| Tool. | What do you need? | Where to find it. |
|---|---|---|
| Toothpicking (wooden or plastic) | To carefully remove large debris from the holes | Home-made set or shop of household goods |
| Soft brush (for example, for drawing or makeup) | Removing dust from the net without scratches | Stationery, pharmacy, cosmetics store |
| Isopropyl alcohol (70% and higher) | Cleaning the net from fat and persistent pollution | Pharmacy, electronics store |
| Scotch (paint or stationery) | Removal of villi and small debris | Any shop |
| Fryer (at minimum power) | Drying the speaker after wet cleaning | Homemade |
β οΈ Warning: Never use metal objects (needles, pins, knives) - they can damage the mesh or membrane of the speaker. Also avoid cotton swabs: their pile can stay inside and aggravate the problem.

If you have a waterproof model (for example, Xiaomi 13 Ultra or Redmi Note 12 Pro+), be especially careful: aggressive cleaning can damage sealed gaskets. In such cases, it is better to limit yourself to dry methods (tap, tape) and avoid liquids.
Method 1: Dry cleaning with a toothpick and brush
This is the safest method that can be used for regular prevention, and it can remove large debris (crumbs, grains of sand, hair) and some dust.
- Turn off the phone and place it on a flat surface with the speaker up.
- Take a toothpick and gently, without pressing, run it through the holes of the mesh, and move parallel to the surface, not inland, so as not to push the debris in.
- Use a soft brush to remove dust. With light movements, sweep the dust from the center of the speaker to the edges. Don't push, the mesh may become deformed.
- To remove the villi, put a piece of tape on the speaker with the sticky side down, press it slightly and pull it off sharply. Repeat 2-3 times.
π‘ Tip: If the garbage is stuck deep and doesn't come out, don't try to pick it up. Better go to the purging method (described below) or contact the service.
π‘
For dual-speaker models (like the POCO F5), clean both holes alternately so as not to confuse them. The top speaker is usually responsible for high frequencies, and the bottom speaker is responsible for low frequencies and bass.
This is a solution that works for 80 percent of household clogging, and if the sound doesn't recover after cleaning, it's a deeper problem, like dust hitting a membrane or the speaker is damaged.
Method 2: Pulling the speaker (without disassembly)
If the garbage is stuck inside and doesn't come out of the dry cleaning, you can try blowing it out, and you can do that with a can of compressed air (sold in electronics stores) or even your own mouth (but carefully!).
- Keep the phone down with the speaker so that debris falls under gravity.
- If you use a spray, keep it 5-7 cm away from the speaker. With short presses (1-2 seconds) apply air at an angle of 45Β°. Don't direct the jet directly into the holes!
- When blowing out with your mouth, exhale sharply (as if blowing out a candle), but do not spit. Repeat 3-4 times.
- After purging, check the speaker for debris and, if necessary, repeat dry cleaning with a brush.
β οΈ Warning: Never use a vacuum cleaner to clean the speaker! Even at minimal power, it can damage the membrane or tear out the mesh. Also avoid cans of freon - they leave oily traces.
What if the sound gets worse after the sound is blown out?
This method is especially effective for models with large speaker holes, such as the Xiaomi Black Shark (gaming smartphones) or the Redmi Note series. However, if the phone has waterproofing, the purge can violate the tightness - use it only as a last resort.
Method 3: Wet cleaning with isopropyl alcohol
If the speaker is contaminated with fat, sticky substances or dust that can't be removed with dry methods, isopropyl alcohol will help, it evaporates quickly and leaves no stains. Here's how to use it correctly:
- Moisten the cotton-coat disc (not the stick!) with isopropyl alcohol. It should be wet, but not dripping.
- Gently wipe the speaker grid with rotational motions without pressing. Keep fluid out of the holes!
- For hard-to-reach areas, use a toothpick wrapped in a damp cloth. Again, without pressing.
- Let the phone dry for at least 30 minutes at room temperature. You can speed up the process with a hair dryer at minimum power (hold at a distance of 20 cm).
β οΈ Note: Never use it for cleaning:
Water (leaves the divorces and can corrode the membrane).
Soap solution or household chemicals (corrodes the protective coating).
Acetone or solvents (damage plastic and glue).
Isopropyl alcohol is suitable for all Xiaomi models, including flagships (Xiaomi 14) and budget series (Redmi A2). The main thing is not to overdo it with the amount of liquid. If there is no alcohol, you can use distilled water, but then drying should be longer (1-2 hours).
Method 4: Ultrasonic cleaning (for power users)
This method is suitable for deep cleaning if the speaker is heavily clogged and previous methods have not helped, but it requires caution and is not suitable for all models. You will need an ultrasonic bath (you can buy an inexpensive one on AliExpress or borrow from friends).
πΉ Suitable for: Xiaomi with removable back cover (e.g. old Redmi models) 4X, Mi A1) Or if you're ready to take your phone apart.
β Not suitable for: Models with adhesive body (Xiaomi) 12T, POCO X5) or waterproofing β the risk of damage is too high.
- Remove the back cover of the phone (if it is removable) or gently disconnect the speaker from the board (this requires disassembly skills).
- Place the speaker in an ultrasonic bath with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol, processing time of 10-15 seconds at minimum power.
- Take out the speaker and dry it for at least 24 hours in a warm, dry place (e.g., on a battery, but not in direct sunlight).
- Get your phone together and check the sound.
π‘ Important: Ultrasound can damage adhesive joints or fine contacts, so use this method only if you are confident in your skills.
π‘
Ultrasonic cleaning is a last resort, 90% of the time, you're dry, you're purging, you're not sure if you're going to take your phone down, you better go to the service.
Method 5: Software Check Before Cleaning
Before you disassemble the phone or aggressively clean the speaker, make sure the problem isn't with settings or software failure.
- Open Settings β Sound and make sure the volume slider is at maximum and the Do Not Disturb mode is turned off.
- Check the equalizer: go to Settings β Sound β Sound quality and reset the settings to standard.
- Run the speaker test through the engineering menu: ##4636## β Equipment Test β Audio β Speaker Test If the sound in the test is clean and the music is not, the problem is not the dynamics, but the application or files.
- Update your firmware: sometimes sound bugs are fixed in newer versions of MIUI. Check for updates in Settings β About Phone β System Update.
If after all the checks, the sound is hoarse or quiet, then the speaker is really clogged, and it's time to start cleaning, and if the problem is in the software part, reinstalling the firmware or resetting the settings can help without mechanical intervention.
What can not be done when cleaning the speaker?
Some folk methods can irrevocably damage the speaker or the phone itself, and here is a list of things that are strictly forbidden:
- π« Use needles, pins or knives β they will pierce a mesh or membrane.
- π« Vacuum the speaker - strong airflow can tear the membrane.
- π« Wash the speaker with water β even if the phone is waterproof, it will violate the tightness.
- π« Clean the speaker on the phone β vibration from the sound can drive the garbage deeper.
- π« Use alcohol wipes for injections β they contain oils that remain on the mesh.
- π« Drying your phone in the microwave or oven will cause plastic to melt and damage the battery.
Also, you should not try to disassemble a phone without experience if it has a glue case (for example, Xiaomi 13 Lite), the risk of damage to the plumes or display is too high, in such cases, it is better to contact the service center.
