Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro is one of the most popular smartphones of the mid-range, but even it is not immune to the problem of clogged speakers. Dust, pile from pockets, moisture and microparticles accumulate in the grille over time, worsening the sound quality: wheezing, mutedness or the complete disappearance of low frequencies. In 80% of cases, the problem is solved independently without going to the service center.
In this article, we will discuss 5 proven cleaning methods, from the simplest (with toothpicking) to advanced (ultrasonic bath for complex contaminants). Also, we will find out why after cleaning the speaker can sound quieter (this is normal and temporary), and how to avoid damage to the membrane. All methods are tested on the Redmi Note 9 Pro with the original speakers NXP TFA9895.
Signs of a clogged speaker: when it's time to clean
Before you start cleaning, make sure that the problem is the contamination, not a software failure or hardware breakdown.
- π Wheezing and crackling when playing music or talking is a classic sign of dust hitting the membrane.
- π Muffled sound, especially at low frequencies (bass disappears).
- π§ Moisture under the grille β if the phone fell into the water or was used in the rain, there could be deposits inside.
- π The sound disappears when tilted - particles move inside the housing, temporarily blocking the speaker.
If the sound is distorted only in specific applications (for example, YouTube, but not Spotify), the problem is more software. Try resetting the audio settings to Settings β Sound β Additional β Resetting.
β οΈ Warning: If the speaker doesn't make any sounds at all (even system signals), don't try to clean it yourself. This could be a contact break or an amplifier chip failure - it requires diagnostics in the service.
Method 1: Dry brushing with a toothpick or needle (for mild contaminants)
The most gentle method that's suitable for removing dust and pile from the surface of the grille.
- πͺ₯ Plastic or wooden toothpick (not metallic!).
- π¦ Lantern (for illumination of holes).
- π§΄ Alcohol wipes (for disinfecting the tool).
Step-by-step:
- Turn off the phone and get it out. SIM-card (vibration when cleaning can knock down network settings).
- Hold the flashlight at an angle of 45Β° to the speaker grille - so you can see the pollution better.
- Carefully swipe the toothpick over the holes, pressing slightly. The movements should be parallel to the grille, not perpendicular (to avoid pushing the dirt in).
- For hard-to-reach places, use a needle from a syringe (without a needle!) or a clip unburdened at a 90Β° angle.

After the procedure, turn on your phone and check the sound at maximum volume. If the wheezing is left, move on to the next method.

To prevent dust from accumulating so quickly, regularly blow the speaker with compressed air (for example, a canister to clean the keyboard). Do this 1 time every 2-3 months, holding the balloon at a distance of 10 cm from the grille.
Method 2: Compressed air cleaning (for deep contaminants)
If the toothpick didn't work, it means that the dirt has accumulated under the grille or on the membrane, and compressed air will help, because it blows out particles without damaging the internal parts, use a special canister (sold in electronics stores) or a compressor with a narrow nozzle.
Never use a vacuum cleaner or hair dryer β they create static electricity that can damage the phoneβs chips.

- π Use short pulses (1-2 seconds) to avoid overcooling the speaker.
- π« Do not bring the nozzle closer than 5 cm - a strong flow can tear the membrane.

Method 3: Wet cleaning with alcohol (for sticky contaminants)
If the speaker is exposed to liquid (tea, beer, sweat) or sticky substances (for example, from a sticker), conventional mechanical cleaning will not help. It requires isopropyl alcohol (concentration 70% or higher), it dissolves the contamination and quickly evaporates without leaving traces.
What you need:
- π§΄ Isopropyl alcohol (or medical alcohol 96%).
- ποΈ Cotton swab or soft brush.
- π± Scotch (to protect the microphone).
Instructions:
- Cover the microphone (near the speaker) with a small piece of tape so that the alcohol does not get inside.
- Moisten the cotton swab with alcohol (it should be wet, but not dripping).
- Gently wipe the speaker grille without pressing. Use a brush for the holes.
- Let the phone dry for at least 2 hours (better to leave overnight).
What happens if you use water instead of alcohol?
After drying, check the sound. If the wheezing remains, repeat the procedure or move on to the next method.

Method 4: Sticky mass for deep cleaning (advanced method)
To remove fine dust from hard-to-reach places (for example, under a membrane), a special sticky mass is suitable, which is used to clean keyboards and camera lenses, which fills the space under the grille and "pulls out" particles when extracted.
How to choose mass: Look for polymer gel products (e.g. Elecom LC-GS or Xiaomi Cleaning Gel) and avoid cheap ones, which can leave traces or break down into fibres.
Step-by-step:
- Turn off the phone and place it on a flat surface with the speaker up.
- Cut a small piece of mass (about the size of a pea) and stretch it in your hands to activate the stickiness.
- Carefully press the mass to the speaker grille and hold for 10-15 seconds.
- Gently pull the mass upwards - with it will stretch the dust particles.
- Repeat 2-3 times using fresh pieces of mass.

Sticky mass is the only way to remove dust from under the speaker's membrane without disassembling the phone, but it won't help with wet contamination or mechanical damage.
After cleaning, check the sound: the bass should become clearer, and the wheezing should disappear. If the problem remains, the speaker is probably physically damaged (for example, a membrane is torn).
Method 5: Ultrasonic bath (for complex cases)
This is an extreme measure that requires partial disassembly of the phone, suitable if the speaker is heavily contaminated with tar, corrosion or after liquid contact.

Warning: Disassembling the phone takes away the warranty and requires care. If you're not sure about your skills, contact the service.
Instructions:
- Plug off the back cover of the phone (use a plastic shoulder blade and hair dryer to soften the glue).

- Place the speaker in an ultrasonic bath with distilled water for 10-15 seconds.

What to do if the speaker sounds quieter after cleaning
This is a normal phenomenon that is associated with two factors:
- Temporary change in acoustic properties - after removing the dust, the membrane may relax slightly, and the sound will become less saturated, usually after 1-2 days of active use.
- Psychological effect β after cleaning, you begin to pay attention to the sound that used to seem normal against the background of wheezing.
If the volume does not recover after 3 days, check:
