Xiaomi stopped turning on after a failed firmware, reset or experiment with custom ROMs? The screen only shows the Mi logo or the device does not respond to the power button at all? In this case, your device turned into a so-called βbrickβ β a state where the system does not boot, but the iron remains functional. The good news is that in 90% of cases, such a device can be brought back to life without going to the service center.
The reasons for Xiaomiβs βbrickingβ range from software failures to hardware problems. Most often, the fault is an interrupted OTA update, incorrect installation of TWRP or firmware through Fastboot, as well as conflicts with antirollback (rollback protection of the MIUI version). Less commonly, physical damage to the board after a drop or moisture. In this article, we will analyze all working methods of recovery, from the simplest (via Recovery) to advanced (EDL mode), taking into account the features of the Redmi, POCO and Mi models.
β οΈ Warning: If the smartphone is not showing signs of life (it does not vibrate, does not warm, is not detected by the computer), the problem may be hardware - for example, damaged power controller.

1.Diagnostics: What type of βbrickβ your Xiaomi has
Before you start repairing, determine which brick you are dealing with, and the choice of repair method depends on it:
- π± Soft Brick: The device is turned on, but hung on the logo Mi/Redmi, cyclically reset or go into Fastboot/Recovery. Most often caused by software errors.
- 𧱠Hard Brick: The smartphone does not respond to buttons, does not vibrate, is not defined by the computer as Qualcomm 9008 or MTK Preloader.May be due to damage to the bootloader or hardware failure.
- π Bootloop: An endless reboot in the screensaver phase, usually occurring after a setting reset or a module conflict in the firmware.
To accurately diagnose the problem:
- Connect your smartphone to charge for 10-15 minutes. If the charging indicator lights up, the iron is alive.
- Try going to Fastboot (keep Power + Volume down when you turn it on). If you can, it's a soft brick.
- Connect your device to a PC. If an unknown device with the Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 code appears in Device Manager, your Xiaomi is in EDL mode.
β οΈ Note: If the smartphone is defined as MTK Preloader (for devices running MediaTek processors), do not disconnect it from the PC until the firmware is complete.
2.Recovery through Mi Recovery (for soft brick)
If your Xiaomi is loaded into Mi Recovery, the chances of an easy recovery are maximum, and this method is suitable for devices that:
- π Hang on the logo after resetting settings.
- π± Stop loading after the update OTA.
- π§ They do not have an unlocked boot loader.
Instructions:
- Turn off your smartphone (hold power for 10-15 seconds).
- Press Power + Volume Up to Enter Recovery.
- Select a language (if menu is available).
- Go to Wipe Data β Wipe All Data (full reset).
- After reset, select Reboot β Reboot to System.
If the system does not boot after reset, try installing the official firmware through Recovery:
- Download the correct version of MIUI for your model from en.miui.com (select Recovery ROM).
- Rename the file to update.zip and place it at the root of internal memory (use a memory card if the smartphone is not defined as a drive).
- In Recovery, select Install update.zip to System.
Download the Recovery firmware ROM forecast|Rename the file to update.zip|Put the file in the root of the memory|Charge your smartphone at least 50%-->
3. Firmware via Fastboot (for devices with unlocked bootloader)
If Mi Recovery is not available or helps, the next step is to run the firmware through Fastboot. This method requires an unlocked bootloader and is suitable for most Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO models. Importantly, if the bootloader is locked, you will have to unlock it first (see section 5).
What you need:
- π₯οΈ Windows computer 7/10/11 (For the Mi Flash Tool).
- π Cable USB Type-C (preferably original).
- π¦ Fastboot firmware ROM For your model (download from the official website).
- π οΈ The Mi Flash Tool.
Step-by-step:
- Unpack the Fastboot ROM file in a folder without Cyrillic characters (e.g., C:\Xiaomi\ROM).
- Install the Mi Flash Tool and drivers for your smartphone (if your PC doesnβt recognize the device in Fastboot, use Xiaomi Driver Installer).
- Turn off your smartphone and press Power + Volume down to enter the Fastboot (a bunny with the inscription Fastboot should appear).
- Connect the device to a PC. In the Mi Flash Tool, press Select and specify the path to the firmware folder.
- Select firmware mode: Clean all - complete cleaning (recommended when changing the version of MIUI); Clean all and lock - cleaning + lock the bootloader (use if you plan to sell a smartphone); Save user data - saving user data (does not always work stably).
Flash
β οΈ Note: If the Mi Flash Tool is an anti-rollback error, you are trying to install firmware older than the one on the device before, in which case you either need to look for a newer version. MIUI, squirt EDL (see section 4).
What to do if the Mi Flash Tool is 99% deficient?
4. EDL Mode: Recovery via Qualcomm 9008
If the Fastboot is not available or the firmware doesn't help, the last software method is EDL (Emergency Download Mode), which works at the Qualcomm processor level and allows you to flash your smartphone even with a damaged bootloader, which requires care: wrong actions can permanently bring the device down.
When you need an EDL:
- π¨ The smartphone does not load into Fastboot or Recovery.
- π§ The Mi Flash Tool is a complete error.
- π The device is defined as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008.
What you need:
- π₯οΈ Windows PC and Administrator Rights.
- π Cable USB Type-C (required original!).
- π¦ Firmware in.mbn format or EDL ROM (can be found on the forums 4PDA or XDA Developers).
- π οΈ Utility: QFil (for Qualcomm) or SP Flash Tool (for MediaTek).
- π Authorized Xiaomi account (some models require) EDL-authorization).
Instructions for Qualcomm (QFil):
- Install the Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 driver (you can download here).
- Turn off your smartphone. Press the volume up. + Volume down and connect the cable to the PC (hold the buttons) 10β15 The device must be defined as QHUSB_BULK.
- Open QFil, select firmware (prog_emmc_firehose.mbn) and press Download.
- Wait until the process is completed (it can take up to 20 minutes).
For MediaTek (SP Flash Tool):
- Download and install the SP Flash Tool + MediaTek drivers.
- In the program, download the scatter file from the firmware archive.
- Connect the switched off smartphone to the PC (without pressed buttons!).
- Press Download and wait until the cable is finished (donβt turn off!).
| Processor model | Required utility | Typical errors | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qualcomm (Snapdragon) | QFil or Mi Flash Tool (EDL) | Sahara fail, Firehose mismatch | Check the firmware version and firehose file |
| MediaTek (Helio, Dimensity) | SP Flash Tool | BROM error, DA mismatch | Update the drivers and use the correct scatter |
| Anybody. | Anybody. | Device not detected | Try another cable/port, disable the antivirus |

If your Xiaomi is not defined in EDL, Try the testpoint method: you have to close contacts on the motherboard to force the switch to 9008 mode. 4PDA.
5. Unlock bootloader: if the firmware requires an unlocked bootloader
Many Xiaomi models (especially new ones) have a locked bootloader that does not allow you to flash custom recovery or informal firmware. If you encounter a device is locked error in Fastboot, you will have to unlock the bootloader.
The official method (via Mi Unlock):
- Download the Mi Unlock Tool and install it on PC.
- Sign in to your Xiaomi account (it should be linked to your device!).
- Transfer the smartphone to Fastboot and connect to the PC.
- In the program, press Unlock and wait until it is completed (usually takes 3-5 minutes).
β οΈ Note: Xiaomi has tightened unlocking rules since 2026, and newer models (Redmi Note 13, Xiaomi 14, etc.) may require waiting 7-30 days after linking an account to the device.
Unofficial methods (at your own risk):
- π Use of the EDL Authorization through a developer account (requires the purchase of credits on Xiaomi).
- π§ Exploits for older models (e.g. Doweload for Snapdragon) 845/855).
- π» Specialized services (paid, but fast).

Unlocking the bootloader resets all the data on the device! make a backup of important information in advance.
6.Problems with anti-rollback: how to get around the limitations of Xiaomi
Since 2019, Xiaomi has implemented an anti-rollback mechanism that blocks installing firmware older than a particular version, and if you see an anti-rollback check fail error, you are trying to βroll backβ to an earlier MIUI, which is prohibited.
How to solve the problem:
- π₯ Find firmware of the same or newer version that was on the device before. Check the current version through Fastboot command: fastboot getvar anti
- π If the necessary firmware is not, run the device through EDL (The anti-rollback in this mode sometimes goes).
- π οΈ For some models (Redmi Note 10 Pro, POCO X3 Pro) there are patches that disable the check. 4PDA.
β οΈ Warning: Anti-rollback bypass can lead to loss IMEI or problems with the module Wi-Fi/Bluetooth. If not sure, it is better to sew the official firmware of the current or newer version.
7 Hardware problems: when software methods do not help
If none of the above methods worked, the problem may lie in the hardware.
- π Faulty battery (does not hold charge, does not allow the device to be stitched through).
- π Damaged connector USB Type-C (bad contact, short circuit).
- π± Damage to EMMC memory (eMMC chip or UFS It fails after frequent firmware).
- π₯ Burnt power controller or processor (often after falling or getting moisture).
How to diagnose:
- Check if the smartphone warms up when you connect to the charger. If not, there may be a power problem.
- Try flashing the device from another PC and another cable (exclude USB issues).
- If the smartphone vibrates when connected to charging, but does not turn on β perhaps damaged display or plume.
β οΈ Note: If you are running through EDL The utility gives an error Storage read failed or Partition not found, with a high probability of memory damage (eMMC/UFS). In this case, only the replacement of the chip in the service center will help.
8 Prevention: How to avoid a brick in the future
To avoid the need for recovery, follow simple rules:
- π² Always check firmware compatibility with your model (even minor differences in device code can lead to bricks).
- π Switch your smartphone only when charging the battery >50% (unexpected shutdown) = high-risk brick).
- π§ Use original cables and ports USB 2.0 (USB 3.0 sometimes causes firmware failures).
- π₯ Before experimenting with firmware, do a backup through TWRP Or Mi Flash Tool.
- π Do not install custom firmware on devices with a locked bootloader without unlocking.
If youβre experimenting with firmware often, consider buying an EDL cable to quickly transition to 9008 mode without disassembling the device.
