Where to see the serial number on Xiaomi devices: all the ways

Xiaomi serial number is a unique identifier that is required to warranty service, unlock the bootloader, verify the originality of the device or restore access to the Mi Account. Without it, you can not confirm ownership of the gadget in the service center or use official brand services. The problem is that the manufacturer hides this number in different places - depending on the model and condition of the device (it is on or off, whether the screen works).

In this article, we have collected all the current ways to find the serial number on Redmi, POCO, Mi smartphones, as well as on smartwatches, fitness bracelets and other Xiaomi equipment. Separately, we will analyze what to do if the gadget does not turn on, the screen is broken or the system is locked. All methods are tested on devices from 2020-2026 and work independently of the version of MIUI.

1. Serial number in the settings of the smartphone (main method)

If your Xiaomi is switched on and running consistently, the fastest way is to see the serial number in the settings menu, which is suitable for all MIUI-based models (including the Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Mi 11 and older devices).

Open the Settings app (the gear icon on the home screen) and follow the steps:

  1. Go to the About Phone (or About the Tablet Device) section.
  2. Slip on the item All characteristics (on some firmware it is called General Information).
  3. Scroll down to the Serial Number block – this is the right combination.

On new versions of MIUI 14/15, the path may be slightly different: Settings β†’ About Phone β†’ Device Information β†’ Serial Number.

If the serial number doesn’t show, try updating your firmware or resetting your network settings (Settings β†’ Connections β†’ Network Reset).

⚠️ Note: On some custom firmware (e.g. LineageOS or Pixel Experience), the serial number can be replaced by a random set of characters.

2. How to find out the serial number through a box or documents

The manufacturer duplicates the serial number on the original package of the device and on the warranty card, which is the most reliable way if the smartphone does not turn on or the screen does not respond to touch.

  • πŸ“¦ Box sticker: usually on the bottom or side. S/N or Serial No..
  • πŸ“„ Warranty card: serial number is shown at the top of the document next to the device model.
  • πŸ›’ Check or invoice: if you bought in an official store (for example, Mi Store), the number can be printed in the accompanying documents.

Note that on fake boxes, the serial number is often missing or duplicated with other devices. To check the originality, compare the number from the box to what appears in the settings (if the phone is working).

What does the original Xiaomi sticker look like?
On the original box, the serial number sticker has a holographic effect, a clear font, and does not erase when rubbed, and counterfeits are often printed on ordinary paper or used blurry text.

3. Serial number on the device itself (for collapsible models)

If you have an old Xiaomi model with a removable back cover (such as the Redmi 3S, Redmi 4X or Mi A1), you can find the serial number under the battery.

  1. Turn off the device and remove the tray for SIM-map.
  2. Put a plastic card or mediator on the back cover (do not use metal objects!).
  3. Carefully remove the lid and get the battery out.
  4. Under the battery will be a sticker with the serial number (S/N) and IMEI.

Important: On newer models (starting with the Redmi Note 5 and later), the back cover is non-removable. Don't try to open it, it will damage the case and void the warranty.

4. How to find a serial number via Fastboot or Recovery

If the smartphone is not turned on but is responsive to a connection to the computer, the serial number can be found through Fastboot or Recovery modes, which works even on locked or bricked devices.

Method 1: Through Fastboot (for PC)

  1. Install ADB and Fastboot Tools on PC.
  2. Open the command line (Win + R β†’ cmd) and type:

5.Serial number on smart watches and fitness bracelets Xiaomi

For Mi Band, Xiaomi Watch or Redmi Watch gadgets, the serial number can be found in the Mi Fitness mobile app (formerly Mi Fit) or on the device itself.

For the Mi Band 5/6/7 and Redmi Band:

  1. Open the Mi Fitness app on your smartphone.
  2. Go to the device profile (the icon of your bracelet in the top menu).
  3. Slip on the three dots in the upper right corner and select Device Information.
  4. The serial number will be in line S/N.

For the Xiaomi Watch S1/S2:

Click on the Settings dial β†’ About the clock β†’ About the device. The serial number will appear at the bottom of the screen.

On the Mi Band 3 and older models, the serial number is applied to the back of the body under the sensor (a magnifier is needed).

Verification of the serial number for originality

If you know the serial number, you can check if your device is fake.

  1. Go to the official Xiaomi Verify website.
  2. Enter the serial number and IMEI (can be found in the settings or on the box).
  3. The system will show the status of the device: original, service replacement or fake.

The serial number is also useful for:

  • πŸ”“ Unlock the bootloader through the Mi Unlock Tool.
  • πŸ›  Warranty repair (service center requests number to check warranty).
  • πŸ”„ Restore access to Mi Account when password is lost.

πŸ’‘

If you check the Xiaomi site for an error called "Invalid serial number," your device is either a fake or a serial number is entered incorrectly. Check the characters - often confuse the letters I (ai) and 1 (unit), O and 0 (zero).

7. Alternative methods (for advanced users)

If standard methods don’t work, try these options:

Through ADB (for enabled devices)

Connect your smartphone to a PC with USB debugging enabled (Settings β†’ About Phone β†’ MIUI version – tap 7 times, then Settings β†’ Additional β†’ For developers β†’ USB debugging).

adb shell getprop ro.serialno

Through Engineering Mode (Engineering Menu)

Type ##4636## on your phone keyboard, then go to Device Information. The serial number will be in the settings list.

⚠️ Note: Using the engineering menu on some Xiaomi models may cause network settings to reset.Do not change settings unless you are sure of their purpose.

Frequent Questions (FAQ)

Can I get a serial number if my phone is stolen or lost?
Not unless you have the documents or photos of the box, the serial number is not tied to your Mi Account account, and the manufacturer does not provide such data on request, the only option is to contact the police with checks and a warranty card (if they are preserved).
Why do the serial number on the box and in the settings do not match?
This is a sign of either a fake or a replacement motherboard at the service center. Compare both numbers on Xiaomi's official website - if one fails to pass inspection, the device is not original or has been repaired.
Can I change the serial number programmatically?
Technically yes, but it requires root rights and modification of system files (/system/build.prop). However, this number will not pass the check on official Xiaomi services and can lead to locking the device.
Where is the serial number stored in the device’s memory?
The number is stored in the eMMC/UF chip and in the /efs partition (on some models), which can be extracted through specialized utilities like MTK Droid Tools (for MediaTek processors) or Qualcomm QPST (for Snapdragon), but this requires technical skills.
What if the serial number is removed from the box?
Try to restore it with an ultraviolet light, sometimes the print remains, and if that doesn't work, go to the store where you bought the device with a check, and they can provide data from their database.
