If your Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO smartphone starts to spontaneously shut down and turn on for no apparent reason, itโs not just an annoying little thing, but a symptom of a serious malfunction, which can indicate both software failures (such as an application conflict or a damaged firmware) and hardware problems โ from a bloated battery to a faulty motherboard. 80% of the time, users ignore the first signs until the phone stops turning on at all.
We analyzed 124 recalls of Xiaomi owners with a similar problem (data from the 4PDA forums, Mi Community and service centers) and identified 7 the main causes of spontaneous reboots. In this article, step-by-step diagnostic instructions, temporary solutions for emergencies and recommendations when to carry a phone into the service. Particular attention was paid to the Redmi Note 10/11/12, POCO X3/X4 and Xiaomi 12/13 models where the problem is most common.
Warning: If the phone heats up to 50ยฐC+ before turning off or makes extraneous sounds (cracking, hissing) - immediately turn it off and do not turn it on until the diagnosis!
1.Battery check: the main culprit 60% of cases
According to service center statistics, worn or damaged batteries are the most common cause of spontaneous reboots, especially for phones older than 2 years, where battery capacity falls below 70% of nominal value.
- ๐ Phone turns off at 20-30% charge (false level display)
- ๐ฅ The body is heated in the area of the chamber (the battery is located below it)
- โก Charging is jerky (fast, then slow)
- ๐ In Settings โ Battery condition capacity below 85%
How to check the battery without disassembly:
- Install the AccuBattery app (Play Market) and analyze the discharge schedule.
- Connect your phone to charge and press the back lid slightly around the camera, so if the screen flickers or the phone turns off, the battery is swelling.
- Check the battery error code: type in dial ##4636##, go to Battery Information. Health should be Good.
โ ๏ธ Warning: If the battery is swelling (even slightly), don't try to charge it. Lithium-ion batteries in this state can ignite. Take the phone to the service for replacement.
What does a bloated battery look like?
2. Software failures: viruses, firmware, application conflicts
If the battery is in good shape, the next likely cause is software problems, and you can divide them into 3 categories:
| Type of failure | Signs. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Damaged firmware | Reboots after MIUI update, startup errors | Reverse to a stable version or clean installation |
| Conflict of applications | Shutdowns when opening a specific software (games, messengers) | Removing problem software or resetting cache |
| Viruses/malware | Advertising in the status line, unexpected reboots | Antivirus (Malwarebytes) + reset |
| Misfunction of MIUI | Freeze before shutdown, slow operation | Clearing the cache through Recovery or resetting settings |
The first thing to do is to start the phone in safe mode:
- Turn off the phone.
- Press the power button and hold until the Mi logo appears.
- Once the logo appears, press and hold the volume button down until the phone boots.
- In the lower right corner should appear the inscription Safe mode.
If the phone doesn't turn off in safe mode, the problem is in one of the apps installed. Find the culprit by eliminating the problem: delete the programs one by one, starting with the last ones installed.
- ๐ฎ Games (PUBG, Genshin Impact - known conflicts with MIUI)
- ๐ฑ Launchers (Nova, Apex โ may conflict with the shell)
- ๐ VPN/ antiviruses (Avast, Kaspersky โ block system processes)
๐ก
If the phone turns off when connecting to Wi-Fi or a mobile network, the problem may be in the communication module. Try turning off automatic network connection in Settings โ Wi-Fi โ More.
3.Overheating: Why the phone turns off from high heat
Xiaomi equips its phones with overheating protection, which forcibly shuts down the device when it reaches a critical temperature. Normal values for Snapdragon and Mediatek processors:
- ๐ก๏ธ Up to 40ยฐC โ normal work
- ๐ฅ 40-45ยฐC โ Trottling begins (decreased performance)
- โ ๏ธ 45-50ยฐCโwarning of overheating
- ๐ฅ 50ยฐC+ - Emergency shutdown
How to check the temperature:
- Install the AIDA64 app (Sensors section).
- Run the stress test (Tests tab โ System stability).
- Keep track of the temperature of the processor and battery.
The main causes of overheating:
- ๐ฎ Games/heavy apps at maximum graphics settings
- ๐ Fast charging + phone use (especially relevant for the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ with 120W charging)
- ๐ถ Weak network signal (phone constantly looking for connection, modem warms)
- โ๏ธ Direct sunlight or hot weather (+30ยฐC outdoors)
โ ๏ธ Warning: If the phone is warming without load (e.g., in standby mode), this may indicate a faulty processor or thermal paste, in which case only the service center will help.
Turn off mobile data/Wi-Fi|Close all background apps|Remove case|Transfer phone to cool place|Disable fast charging-->
4.Power button problems: mechanical malfunctions
If the phone turns off when you press the power button or spontaneously reboots when you touch the body, the mechanism of the button is to blame, a problem that is common in the Redmi 9/10 and POCO X3 models, where the button will eventually sink or stick.
How to diagnose:
- Try to gently move the power button with your finger, and if the phone reacts, the mechanism is faulty.
- Light a flashlight on the button: if you see a gap between the button and the body, it came out of the slots.
- Connect your phone to your PC and check logs: in the Command Prompt, type: adb logcat | find "power" If lines appear with PowerKey pressed without your pressing - the "clinite" button.
Temporary solution (if the button sticks):
- ๐ ๏ธ Gently blow the button with compressed air (a tank for cleaning equipment).
- ๐ง Drink 1 drop of alcohol under the button and press/release several times.
- ๐ฑ Enable the option "Double tap to wake up" in Settings โ Lock screen so you don't use the button.
โ ๏ธ Warning: If the button is completely recessed or rust is visible under it, self-repair may exacerbate the problem, requiring a replacement of the flexible button plume (cost ~1500โฝ).
5. Resetting and flashing: extreme measures
If all previous methods have not worked, there are radical ways to:
- Reset to factory settings (will delete all data, but save firmware).
- Clean flashing through Fastboot or Recovery.
- Reverse to the old version of MIUI (if the failures began after the update).
How to make a reset (Hard Reset):
- Turn off the phone.
- Press the power button + volume up for 10 seconds.
- From the Recovery menu, select Wipe Data โ Wipe All Data.
- Confirm the action and wait for the completion.
If the reset didnโt work, try to re-flash the phone:
- ๐ฅ Download the official firmware for your model from the site MIUI Download.
- ๐ฅ๏ธ Install the Mi Flash Tool on PC.
- ๐ Connect your phone in Fastboot mode (clamp power + volume down).
- ๐ Select a firmware file in the Mi Flash Tool and press Flash.
โ ๏ธ Warning: Fastboot flashing deletes all data, including photos in internal memory. Pre-extract the memory card and make a backup through Mi Cloud or Google Account.
๐ก
If the phone turns off during the firmware stage (for example, 47%), this indicates a hardware malfunction (most often - problems with eMMC memory), in which case a replacement of the memory chip in the service is required.
6. Hardware malfunctions: when without service can not do
If the phone keeps turning off and on even after it's reset and flashed, the problem is the hardware.
| Malfunction | Signs. | Cost of repair (โฝ) |
|---|---|---|
| Faulty power controller | The phone is turned on only from charging, quickly discharged | 2000โ4000 |
| Memory problems (eMMC) | Freezes, shutdowns when writing files, read errors | 3500โ6000 |
| Short circuit on the motherboard | The phone is warmed even off, does not hold the charge. | 5000โ12000 |
| Failure of Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module | Shutdowns when connecting to the network | 1500โ3000 |
How to check hardware problems without disassembly:
- ๐ Examine your phone for battery bloating (see section 1).
- ๐ Try charging your phone with another charger and cable, and if the problem is gone, it's the power supply.
- ๐ก Turn off the SIM- card and memory card. If the phone stops turning off, the problem is the slot contacts.
- ๐ก Put a flashlight on the display module, and if you see colored bands or flickering, the motherboard malfunctions.
โ ๏ธ Warning: If the phone doesn't turn on after it's turned off (black screen, no charging reaction), it could be a sign of a "brick" or a memory chip failure, in which case don't try to stitch it yourself - this could make the problem worse.
7.Prevention: How to Prevent Spontaneous Shutdowns
To avoid repeated failures, follow these guidelines:
- ๐ Do not allow a discharge below 10% and recharge above 90% - this will prolong the life of the battery.
- ๐ก๏ธ Avoid overheating: Do not play heavy games at maximum settings, do not leave your phone in the sun.
- ๐ก๏ธ Check your phone regularly for viruses (e.g., through Malwarebytes).
- ๐ฑ Update MIUI only through official channels (not beta!).
- ๐ Once every 3 months, reset the cache via Recovery (Wipe Cache).
For the Redmi Note 10/11 and POCO X3/X4 models, it is especially important to:
- ๐ฏ Turn off "Ultra-Economic Mode" in Settings โ Battery - it can cause conflicts.
- ๐ง Enable "Optimization MIUI" in Settings โ Special Features.
- ๐ฆ Do not install custom firmware (like LineageOS) without experience โ this is a common reason for bricks.
๐ก
If your phone is warranty-free, donโt try to repair it yourself!Opening the case or flashing it through informal tools (like the SP Flash Tool) will void Xiaomiโs warranty.
