When Xiaomiβs favorite smartphone suddenly stops responding to clicks, hangs on a logo or shows a black screen, it can take anyone by surprise. In technical jargon, this condition is often called a βbrickβ, implying complete or partial failure of the device. However, you should not panic ahead of time, since in most cases the hardware of the gadget remains intact and the problem lies in the software or system failure.
Before you bring the device to the service center, you should try to conduct self-diagnosis and resuscitation. Modern Xiaomi smartphones, whether it is a budget Redmi or flagship Mi, are equipped with special boot modes that allow you to restore the system even after critical errors. Understanding how these mechanisms work will help you save time and money.
What you do next depends on your deviceβs state of mind: whether it responds to buttons, vibrates when you connect to a charger, or shows any images on the screen. Itβs critical to determine the type of soft brick (Soft Brick or Hard Brick) in the first minutes of the problem, as it directly affects the choice of recovery method and the chances of a successful outcome without soldering chips.
Diagnostics of device status
The first step is always to make a precise diagnosis. Not all cases of a silent phone are fatal. Often the device just goes into deep sleep or freezes in the background. Try connecting the gadget to your computer: if the USB connection sounds, the motherboard is alive and the problem is solved software. If there is no reaction at all, it may be a battery drain or a damaged power controller.
Notice the behavior of the charging indicator. If the LED lights up when you connect to the network (even if the screen is black), it's a good sign. If the phone shows the Mi logo and nothing happens, we're dealing with a cyclical reboot known as bootloop, which indicates damage to system files or application conflict.
There are several key symptoms by which the problem can be classified:
- π Complete no reaction: The screen is black, there is no vibration, the indicators do not burn even with a long connection to the charger.
- π Bootloop: The phone turns on, shows the manufacturerβs or Android logo, then switches off or restarts again.
- β‘ Hanging on the screensaver: The device shows the logo and does nothing else, the screen is constantly on fire.
- π± Black screen with reaction: The screen does not light up, but when connected to the PC, the computer makes a sound of connecting the new device.
It is also important to check the integrity of the buttons. Sometimes, physical sticking of the volume or power button can simulate a system breakdown. Try to gently "crush" the buttons or clean them with compressed air. If the buttons are stuck in a closed state, the phone can endlessly try to enter recovery mode or simply not respond to single presses.
β οΈ Warning: If the phone falls into water or has visible mechanical damage to the body, attempts to turn on may result in a short circuit.
Basic methods of forced reset
The simplest and most often ignored method is forced reboot, which is that the Android operating system on the MIUI shell can freeze due to overflow of RAM or conflict of processes, and unlike conventional shutdowns, this method breaks the power chain programmatically, causing controllers to reset their states.
To do this, you need to hold the power button for a long time. The standard retention time is 10 to 20 seconds. If the phone vibrates and the logo appears, the problem is solved. If there is no reaction, try a button combination: press the power button and the volume button at the same time. Hold them for about 15-20 seconds.
Sometimes the "discharge" method helps. Leave the phone with the black screen plugged into the charger for a few hours or even overnight. If the battery goes into deep discharge, it takes time to gain the minimum charge to start the system. After that, try turning the device on again.
π‘
Use the original charger and cable. Cheap cables can only transmit current, but not data, which will prevent diagnosis through the PC, or give insufficient current to wake the controller.
There is also a specific method for some Xiaomi models that helps you get out of the freeze:
- π Connect your phone to the charger.
- π Press the power button and one of the volume buttons (usually "Loud upΒ»).
- β³ Hold for about 30 seconds, then release the power button, continuing to hold the volume for another 5 seconds.
These actions do not carry the risk of data loss, as they do not affect the file system. If after all the manipulations the phone continues to behave inadequately, move to more complex methods of recovery through special modes.
Using Recovery Mode for Resetting
If the basic reboot didn't work, the next step is to use Recovery Mode, which is a special diagnostic interface that is sewn into the phone's memory regardless of the main operating system, and you can reset it to the factory settings or try to reflash the device.
To get to Recovery on Xiaomi, turn off the phone completely (if it doesn't turn off, wait for the discharge or use a combination of buttons to turn off). Then press both the power button and the Volume Up button at the same time. Hold them until the Mi logo appears, then release the power, but keep the volume up until the menu appears.
βοΈ Entrance to Recovery
In the menu, you can navigate with volume buttons (up/down), and the choice is confirmed by the power button. You will need the Wipe Data item. Within this menu, select Wipe All Data. Be careful: this action will completely delete all your photos, contacts and applications.
| Item | Function | Impact on data |
|---|---|---|
| Reboot | A normal reboot. | No change. |
| Wipe Data | Resetting user data | Complete removal |
| Connect with MIAssistant | Mode for firmware through PC | No change. |
| Safe Mode | Starting with disabled third-party applications | No change. |
Once the reset confirmation is confirmed (usually you need to select Confirm and enter the code if it is displayed, or just confirm the action), the cleanup process will begin. Upon completion, select Reboot -> Reboot to System. The first run can take up to 5-10 minutes.
β οΈ Warning: Recovery resets wonβt help if the bootloader or system partition of the boot image is damaged, in which case the phone will go back into cyclic reboot.
Recovery through Fastboot mode
Fastboot mode is a deeper level of access to the device, allowing you to interact directly with it through the computer, and this mode is most often used to flash the "bricks" when Recovery is not available or can not cope.
On the screen will appear an image with a hare repairing an android, or an inscription FASTBOOT It's orange or blue. You'll need a Windows computer to run this mode, USB-cable and installed Xiaomi drivers USB Driver. you will also need the Mi Flash Tool.
Why can't the computer see the phone in Fastboot?
The recovery process is as follows:
- Download the official firmware for your model (required version of Fastboot, it has the extension.tgz, not.zip).
- Unpack the firmware archive in the root of the C disk so that the path is short, such as C:\rom.
- Run the Mi Flash Tool on behalf of the administrator.
- Connect your phone in Fastboot mode and click the βRefreshβ button in the program.
- Choose the path to the firmware folder and click "Flash".
It is important to choose the correct firmware mode in the utility. Clean All mode will completely clear the data, but unlock the bootloader (if it was locked, the phone can stop opening without an account). Clean All and Lock mode will lock the bootloader back, which is only safe for the original global firmware on global versions of devices.
Problems with the bootloader and Mi Account
One of the common reasons for turning the phone into a βbrickβ after flashing is to lock the bootloader. Xiaomi has implemented a security system that ties the device to the Mi Account. If you try to install global firmware on the Chinese version of the phone or vice versa, or simply reset the settings without undetaching the account, a lock can occur.
When you download this device, you'll see a message saying that the device is locked, with a suggestion to connect to Wi-Fi and enter the password from the Mi Account, and if you don't remember the data, it will be extremely difficult to restore access, the official way is to contact with a purchase check in support.
To avoid problems in the future, follow the following rules:
- π Before flashing always unlock the bootloader officially through the developer settings.
- π Do not shave firmware for other regions (Global to China and vice versa) without first unlocking.
- π Remember or write down the username and password from the Mi Account associated with the device.
There are also workarounds and paid services to unlock, but using them carries risks. Unqualified intervention can lead to a complete lock of the device over IMEI, turning it into a real brick that will not be used even for calls.
When a service center is needed
Not all situations can be fixed at home. If software methods, including flashing through Fastboot, do not work, or the phone behaves strangely (heats, discharges quickly, spontaneously turns off), a hardware malfunction is likely.
