Did you press the Xiaomi power button, but the smartphone is not showing signs of life? The screen is black, there is no vibration, and charging is not helping? This problem is familiar to many owners of Redmi, POCO or Mi devices - from the budget Redmi Note 10 to the flagship Xiaomi 13 Ultra. The reasons can be both software (firmware failure, dead battery) and hardware (wear of contacts, damage to the plume).
In 80% of cases, the malfunction can be repaired on its own without disassembling the case and going to the service center. In this article, we will analyze all possible scenarios, from a simple charging check to a forced reboot via ADB. You will also learn when home repairs are dangerous and why certain methods (such as heating the battery) can aggravate the problem. If your Xiaomi does not turn on after a drop or moisture hits, immediately move on to the section on hardware breakdowns.
1. Checking for obvious causes: charging and physical damage
Before you start complex manipulations, eliminate the basic malfunctions. Most often, the power button does not work due to a completely discharged battery or a damaged cable. Connect your smartphone to the original charger (at least 18W) and leave it for 30 to 60 minutes.
- 🔌 Charging indicator: if a red light bulb appears when you connect the cable, the battery charges, but the charge level is not enough to turn on.
- 🔋 Checking the cable: try another USB-cable and power supply, especially relevant to devices with USB-C, wherein the contacts are often oxidized.
- 💧 Moisture traces: Check the corrosion charger (green plaque) or white spots, which are signs of fluid intrusion.
If after an hour of charging the smartphone does not show signs of life, move to the next step, except that if before the breakdown you dropped the phone or it got wet, further actions can cause harm, you should immediately contact the service.

2. Forced reset (Hard Reset)
When the power button is not responding but the phone is charged, hardware reset will help. This method works on all Xiaomi models, including the Redmi 9A, POCO X3 Pro and Mi 11. Importantly, the procedure does not delete data, but interrupts all background processes.
Instructions:
- Press the power button + increase the volume for 10-15 seconds.
- If the screen remains black, try the power button + volume reduction combination (on some models).
- Wait for the vibration or appearance of the Mi logo. After that, release the buttons.
If your smartphone is on, the problem was freeze. To avoid repeated crashes, update your firmware through Settings → About Phone → System Update. If the forced reboot doesn't work, move on to the next method.
Turn off the charger.
Make sure the buttons are not stuck
Use the original cables
Try different button combinations-->
Charging via another connector (for Type-C models)
On some Xiaomi smartphones (such as the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ or Xiaomi 12T), the power button may be blocked due to a failure in the power controller, in which case an alternative charging method will help:
- 🔄 Connect your phone to your computer through USB-Sometimes the PC recognizes the device even when the battery is dead.
- ⚡ Use wireless charging (if the model supports Qi, for example, Xiaomi Mi 10 or Mi 11).
- 🔌 Connect the charger through USB-Sometimes direct contact with the power supply restores the controller.
If after 20-30 minutes of charging one of these ways, the phone turned on, check the power button. If it still does not respond, the problem may be in the button plume or the power chip.
💡
If the phone is powered only by charging but does not respond to the power button, the button's contact mechanism is likely to be faulty, in which case disassembly and cleaning of contacts (see section 6) will help.
4. Enable via Fastboot or Recovery Mode
If the power button doesn't work, but the phone is determined by the computer, you can try turning it on via Fastboot or Recovery mode.
Method 1: Through ADB (if debugging mode was enabled):
adb devices
adb rebootMethod 2: Through Fastboot:
- Connect your phone to your PC by holding the power button + volume down (to log in to Fastboot).
- In the command line, type: fastboot devices fastboot reboot
If these commands didn’t work, try logging into Recovery Mode (hold the power button + volume up) and select Reboot system now. Note: some models (POCO F3, Redmi K40) use a touch screen to navigate the Recovery menu.
| Xiaomi model | Combination for Fastboot | Combination for Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 10/11 | Power + Volume reduction | Power + Volume Increase |
| POCO X3/X4 | Power + Volume reduction | Power + Volume Increase |
| Xiaomi 12/13 | Power + Volume Increase (5 seconds) | Power + Volume Increase (10 seconds) |
| Mi 11 Ultra | Power + Volume reduction | Power + Volume Increase (hold 15 seconds) |
5. Diagnostics of hardware breakdowns
If none of the software methods worked, the problem is probably hardware.
- 🛠️ Wear or oxidation of button contacts: Over time, the button mechanism gets clogged with dust or corrodes (especially after moisture gets in).
- 🔌 Power button plume damage: a common problem after falls or careless disassembly.
- 🔋 Power controller malfunction: chip on motherboard may fail after voltage surge.
- 💥 Battery detachment: If the battery is swelling, it can push the board and block the operation of the button.
The diagnosis will require disassembling the phone, and it's a risky procedure that can lead to loss of warranty or additional breakdowns, and if you're not sure about your skills, you should contact the service.
How to check the power button plume
⚠️ Warning: If you notice a bloated battery (phone cover is raised), don't try to turn on the device - it can cause a fire. Immediately remove the battery (in gloves!) and dispose of it.
Temporary solution: switching on without power button
If the power button is completely out of order, but the phone is in good working order, you can use alternative ways to turn on:
- 🔌 Automatic Charging: on some models (Redmi 9, POCO M3) You can set the option in Settings → Battery → Auto-onlyting when connecting charging.
- 📱 Use of the OTG-Cable: Connect the mouse through USB-OTG — cursor movement can wake up the screen.
- 🔄 Task Planner: If the phone was turned on earlier, install it through ADB Automatically activated: Adb shell am broadcast -a android.intent.action.BOOT_COMPLETED
These methods will be suitable as a temporary solution, but for full use of the phone will require repair or replacement of the power button. The average cost of replacement in service centers is from 800 to 2500 rubles (depending on the model).
💡
If the power button doesn’t work, but the phone turns on via charging or ADB, the problem is precisely in the mechanical part of the button, not the board.
7. When to contact the service center
Not all breakdowns can be repaired by yourself.
- 💦 The phone fell into the water or was exposed to severe humidity (even if there are no external traces).
- 🔥 On the motherboard, blackened or bloated elements (capacitors, chips) are visible).
- 🔋 The battery is swollen or deformed.
- 🛠️ After disassembly, you found broken tracks on the board or a damaged connector.
Average repair prices in official Xiaomi services (2026):
| Type of repair | Cost (rupe) | Time (days) |
|---|---|---|
| Replacement of the power button | 1 200 – 2 500 | 1–2 |
| Cleaning from oxidation (after moisture) | 1 500 – 3 000 | 2–3 |
| Replacement of button plume | 1 800 – 3 500 | 1–2 |
| Repair of the power controller | 3 000 – 6 000 | 3–5 |
⚠️ Warning: Avoid garage workshops that offer repairs for 500-700 rubles. Often in such places use unoriginal parts or damage the fee when soldering. Official Xiaomi services give a warranty for repairs up to 6 months.
