When your favorite Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO smartphone suddenly refuses to respond to the power button, it causes panic in any owner: the screen remains black, there is no vibration, and the charging indicator does not light up, at which point it is important not to give in to emotions and act consistently, since in 80% of cases the device can be brought back to life without visiting the service center.
Before you look for complex solutions, you need to eliminate trivial power problems. Often the phone just "sleeps" due to a deep discharge or a short-term freeze system that requires a forced reboot. Understanding the nature of the malfunction is the first step to successfully restore the gadget.
In this article, we will look at all possible scenarios, from software failures to physical damage to the motherboard, how to log into Recovery Mode, why you need Fastboot mode, and in which cases self-repair can finally finish the device.
Primary Diagnosis and Nutrition Testing
The most common cause of smartphone death is a critical battery drain: If the device has been off for a long time, the chemical processes inside the battery may have slowed down, and it can't give up current to start the system. Connect the original power supply and cable, leaving the phone to charge for at least 30-40 minutes, even if the screen is not showing signs of life.
Note the notification indicator. Many Xiaomi models have LED lights on when charging (usually orange or white) if the indicator flashes but the phone doesn't turn on, that's a good sign that the power supply is intact, and the problem is likely software. If there is no reaction at all, try replacing the cable or power supply with a known serviceable one.
β οΈ Warning: If the phone gets hot before it stops turning on, disconnect it immediately.Attempting to charge the overheated device can cause the battery to bloat or catch fire.
Sometimes the problem is that the USB Type-C connector is contaminated. Dust and pile compressed inside the port prevents the cable from entering the end and making contact. Carefully, using a wooden toothpick or a plastic spatula, clean the connector. Do not use metal needles to keep the contacts closed.
Forced reset and static voltage reset
The Android operating system that runs the MIUI or HyperOS shell sometimes encounters critical bugs that block startup, in which case the standard power button press doesn't work. You'll need to perform a Hard Reset button procedure that breaks the battery's power chain in a software-based way.
To do this, press the on button and hold it for 15-20 seconds. Some models require simultaneous on- and off-volume buttons. If the device is stuck while loading the MI logo, this combination often helps to get out of the loop.
The effective method is to reset the static voltage. To do this, disconnect the phone from charging, press the on button for 30 seconds (even if nothing happens), then plug the charger in without releasing the button, and wait another 10-15 seconds. After that, try briefly pressing the on button.

Diagnostics via Fastboot and Recovery
If the screen is black but the phone is responsive, check the availability of the bootloader's system partitions. Fastboot allows you to diagnose a low-level state. Turn off the phone (if possible) and press the Volume Down and On buttons at the same time to enter.
If you see the logo of a rabbit fixing an android on the screen, or the word Fastboot, the display and the main components of the board are working, the problem is that the system files are damaged or the update is unsuccessful, in which you can connect the phone to your computer and use the Mi Flash Tool for flashing.
To access the Recovery Recovery menu, use the combination of Volume Up and Turn On. In this volume button-driven menu, you can try clearing the cache. This action is safe for your data, as opposed to a full reset.
| Button combination | Mode of work | What is used for | Screen reaction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volume Down + Including | Fastboot | Flashing, unlocking | Logo of the hare / Fastboot text |
| Volume Up + Including | Recovery | Resetting settings, cleaning the cache | MIUI Recovery menu |
| Volume Up + Down + Including | Engineering Mode | Iron testing (rarely) | List of tests |

Display and matrix problems
Sometimes the phone works fine: you hear notifications, you hear vibrations when you call, but the screen stays completely black, and that's a classic sign of a failure of the display matrix or the plume connecting the screen to the board, and you can check that by calling the device number from another phone.
If the call passes but the image is not, try flashlighting the screen from different angles. If you see a barely noticeable image, then the backlight is burned. In modern Xiaomi smartphones with AMOLED screens, replacing the display is often the only solution, since they come with modules.
Also, avoid software shutdown of the display. Try connecting the phone to your computer via USB. If the device's connection sounds but the screen doesn't light up even when the incoming call is made, the probability of hardware failure of the display is more than 90%.
β οΈ Warning: Do not try to disassemble your phone yourself if you do not have experience with plumes. Damage to the display connector when you unplug may make repairs economically inefficient.
Firmware failure and software errors
An attempt to install an unofficial firmware, an interrupted air update (OTA), or a conflict of system applications can lead to a device "bricking", in which case the phone can be endlessly restarted (bootloop) or hang on the MI logo.
If the device goes into a cyclical reboot, try entering Recovery mode and select Wipe Data. Warning: this action will completely delete all your data (photos, contacts, apps), returning the phone to factory state. This often saves the situation if the problem was damage to the system partition.
Deeper recovery requires a PC. Download the official firmware for your model from miui.com. Unpack the archive and use Mi Flash. It is important to choose Clean All mode to eliminate file conflicts between the old and new system.

Always back up your data to the Mi Cloud or your computer, and if you have problems turning it on, it will save you nerves and time to reconnect and retrieve photos.
Hardware malfunctions: battery and board
If none of the software methods worked, the problem is probably physical. Lithium polymer batteries degrade over time. 3-4 In the years since, the battery could swell or lose capacity to a critical minimum, which does not allow to start the processor.
A more serious problem is the malfunction of the power controller on the motherboard, which could be due to a voltage surge when charging with a substandard unit, moisture or impact, in which case the phone can consume current (shown 0.1-0.3 A on the power supply), but not turn on.
Diagnostics of the board requires special equipment, such as a laboratory power supply and a microscope. If you see traces of oxidation, corrosion or bloating of elements on the board, self-repair without soldering equipment and skills is impossible.

If the phone doesn't respond to charging, buttons and computer, and it's under a year old, it's a guarantee. Don't open the case, so you don't lose the right to free repair.
