Modern Xiaomi and Redmi smartphones have long since ceased to be just callers, becoming powerful multimedia centers. However, for many users, especially in the business environment, automatic phone recording remains a key feature. Unfortunately, Google’s privacy policies and changes in laws have led to this option becoming unavailable by default in most regions.
Complicating matters, the feature depends on the firmware region, the version of the MIUI operating system or the new HyperOS, and the hardware platform of the device. Users often face a situation where the global firmware version has no record button, while the Chinese or Indian build it works normally.
In this article, we will look at which models support native recording, how to software activate hidden features, and what alternatives exist for devices where the feature was cut out by the manufacturer. We will look at the technical aspects of the audio stream and the legal restrictions imposed by Google on Android smartphone manufacturers.
Google’s policy and Android changes: why the record went missing
Since Android 9 Pie, and especially in Android 10 and later, Google has imposed strict restrictions on microphone access during a phone call. Previously, apps could easily capture audio streams, but now the system blocks this process for security and privacy reasons, which has led to many third-party voice recorders no longer recording voice or requiring complex manipulation of root rights.
Xiaomi, as one of the largest Android manufacturers, has been forced to comply with Google Play Services requirements to keep access to the Google App Store and services on its devices, resulting in the Global ROM for most European and CIS countries being software-disabled or hidden, but in regional builds like China, India or Indonesia, these restrictions are often absent.

Technically, this is done through verification. SIM-If the system determines that the device is within the scope of strict privacy laws (e.g. the European Union), the com.android.phone telephony module blocks the ability to mix audio streams. That is why the same hardware module behaves differently in different countries.
With the release of the HyperOS shell, the situation has stabilized a little, but the principle has remained the same: the availability of the function depends on the combination of hardware + firmware region. It is important for users to understand that the absence of a write button is not a defect of the speaker or microphone, but a software limitation.
List of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO models with native entry
Despite the general limitations, there are a number of models where the conversation recording function is built out of the box and does not require dancing with a diamond, most often these are devices released for Asian markets, or flagship lines where engineers left the possibility of activation through a change of region.

Importantly, having a feature on the list doesn’t guarantee it to work 100% in all cases. For example, in some models of the Redmi Note series, recording can only work with the speaker on, which is a direct consequence of the limitations of Android. At the same time, the more expensive models of the Xiaomi Number series usually have a full record of both interlocutors without turning on the speakerphone.
Smartphones with the IN marking in the model number almost always have a built-in call recorder, because local law in India requires such functionality to combat fraud. When you buy such a device through marketplaces, you get a working function immediately after you turn on.
How to check and enable call recording in settings
Before looking for third-party solutions, you need to make sure that the feature is not hidden in the settings of your current region. Often users simply do not know where to look for the switch, as it can be hidden in the depths of the phone book menu.
Open the standard Phone app. Click on the three dots in the top right corner or go to the settings through the menu. Find "Call Record" or "Call Record." If you don't, try changing the region in the general settings, but we'll talk about that in the next section.

If you find a point, log in and activate the Auto Record switch, and you can set the rules here: write down all incoming numbers, only selected numbers or specific contacts, which saves memory space and does not store unnecessary dialogue with couriers or spam.
In some versions of MIUI, the path to settings may be different, for example, in older builds it was at Settings → Applications → System Applications → Phone. In newer versions of HyperOS, the logic is stored in the call app itself. If you don't see these options, then your firmware region is locked at the system level.
Activation methods through region change and engineering menu
There is a proven method to unlock the write feature on many Xiaomi global devices without flashing it, which involves temporarily changing the region of the device to the country where the recording is allowed (for example, India, Indonesia or Singapore), which forces system services to recalculate the available features.
To implement this, go to Settings → Additional Settings → Region. Select India or Indonesia. Then completely close the Phone application through Task Manager and open it again. Often after this procedure, the desired switch appears in the call settings.
