Why Xiaomi Owners Choose Contactless Payment
Xiaomi smartphones have long since ceased to be just devices for calls β they have become full-fledged financial assistants. According to Mi Pay data for 2023, more than 60% of Redmi and POCO users in Russia pay for purchases through their phone at least once a month. Linking a bank card to a smartphone saves time, eliminates the need to carry a wallet and reduces the risk of plastic loss. But how do you do it right to avoid mistakes and ensure security?
In this article, we will analyze all the current ways of linking cards to Xiaomi devices, from standard Mi Pay to alternative services like Google Pay and Samsung Pay (yes, they also work on some models!). We will pay special attention to the nuances for popular banks: Sberbank, Tinkoff, VTB and Alfa-Bank. And we will also tell you what to do if the system refuses to accept your card - this section will save many nerves.
We warn you right away: the binding process takes no more than 5 minutes, but requires preparation. For example, a bank card must support virtualization technology, otherwise it simply cannot be added to a mobile wallet.

Not all bank cards are suitable for contactless payment via smartphone, but here are the key requirements to be met:

Method 1: Linking a card via Mi Pay (official Xiaomi app)
Mi Pay is Xiaomiβs signature contactless payment service, pre-installed on most of the brandβs smartphones. It runs on NFC and supports Mastercard, Visa and Mir cards. The main advantage is integration with system settings, which makes it easier to pay (itβs enough to press the power button twice).
To link the card through Mi Pay:
- Open the Mi Pay app (if not, download from the Mi App Store or Google Play).
- Click Add Card and select the type (debit/credit).
- Scan the card with the camera or enter the data manually: number, expiration date, CVV.

Method 2: Google Pay binding (alternative for all Android devices)
Google Pay is a universal contactless payment service that works on all Xiaomi smartphones with NFC and Android version at least 5.0. Its main advantage over Mi Pay is the support of more banks, including Alfa Bank and Raiffeisen, which do not work with Xiaomiβs branded service.

To link the card via SberPay:
- Open the SberBank Online application and log in.
- Go to the Maps section and select the desired card.
- Click Add to SberPay (the button will appear if your smartphone supports the service).
- Confirm the operation via SMS or biometrics (print/face).
- Wait for notification of successful binding.
You can now pay for purchases by simply unlocking your phone and bringing it to the terminal. SberPay automatically selects the default card, but it can be changed in the SberBank Online app settings.

If you have multiple Sberbank cards, you can set a priority card in SberPayβs settings to pay, which eliminates the need to choose it every time you buy.
β οΈ Note: If the terminal does not accept payment after linking the card via SberPay, check if the βread onlyβ option is included in the settings. NFC (Settings β Connections β NFC β Mode of operation. The "Emulation Card" mode must be selected for payment".
The solution to the problem: why Xiaomi does not accept the card
Even if you do all the steps right, the system can refuse to tie the card, and here are the most common reasons and ways to eliminate them:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The error "The bank is not supported" | The bank does not cooperate with Mi Pay or Google Pay | Try to link the card through another service (for example, SberPay for Sberbank) |
| The "Incorrect Card Data" error | Misprint in number, expiration date or CVV | Check the data or enter it manually (no scanning) |
| SMS code doesn't come in | Blocking messages by the operator or bank | Check the balance, disable the SMS lock or request the code again |
| The app freezes when you add a map | Older version of Mi Pay or Google Pay | Update the app through Play Market or clear its cache |
| Terminal doesn't see the phone | NFC is disabled or the wrong mode is selected | Turn on NFC and set the Emulation Card mode |
If none of these methods worked, try:
- π Reboot your smartphone and try again.
- π± Install an alternative launcher (like Nova Launcher) β sometimes a standard shell MIUI Conflict with payment services.
- π οΈ Reset the settings NFC before the factory (Settings) β System system β Resetting settings β Resetting settings NFC).
