The problem of keeping contacts on Xiaomi smartphones is one of the most annoying for users: you edit a number, add a new contact or correct a name, but after rebooting or synchronizing all changes disappear. Sometimes the problem manifests itself selectively: some contacts are saved and some are not. In this article, we will analyze all possible causes, from banal errors to hidden MIUI failures, and give step-by-step instructions for troubleshooting.
Xiaomi is actively integrating its own services (such as Mi Account) in parallel with Google, which often leads to sync conflicts, and the latest versions of MIUI 14/15 have changed the logic of working with contacts, so they can now be stored in three places at once: on the device, in Google Account and in Mi Cloud, and if at least one of these channels fails, the changes will not persist.
Before you start making corrections, answer two questions:
- Do you use the standard Contacts app from Xiaomi or a third-party app (e.g. Truecaller, Google Contacts)?
- Is Google or Mi Account sync enabled?
The answers to them will narrow the range of possible causes by 50%.
1. Conflict between Google Account and Mi Account
The most common reason is dual synchronization, and if you have both accounts (Google and Mi Account) connected, the system can argue where to save changes, such as editing a contact in local memory, and Xiaomi automatically overwrites it with data from the cloud.
How this works in practice:
- ๐ฑ You add a new number to the contact Ivan Petrov on the device.
- โ๏ธ After 5 minutes, Mi Cloud syncs and pulls up the old version of the contact from the cloud.
- ๐ As a result, your changes disappear.
To check out this version:
- Open Settings โ Accounts and Synchronization.
- See which accounts have access to Contacts (check next to item).
- If both are enabled, turn off sync for one of them (better for Mi Account if you are actively using Google).
โ ๏ธ Note: If you turn off sync with Mi Cloud, all contacts saved only there will disappear from the device. Pre-export them to the.vcf file via Settings โ Contacts โ Imports/Exports.
2. Failures in the application โContactsโ from Xiaomi
The standard com.android.contacts application in MIUI sometimes works in an unstable way.
- ๐ Changes persist, but disappear after reboot.
- โ When editing the contact, an error appears: "It was not possible to save".
- ๐ต Contacts are duplicated or disappear randomly.
Decisions in order of complexity:
- Cache Cleanup: Go to Settings โ Applications โ Application Management โ Contacts โ Memory โ Clear cache. This will delete temporary files, but will not affect the contacts themselves.
- App Settings Reset: In the same menu, click Settings Reset. This will return the app to factory settings, but the contacts will remain.
- Reinstall updates: If the problem has occurred after the update MIUI, Try rolling back the app. To do this, click on the app settings. โฎ โ Remove updates.
If nothing worked, install an alternative contact app like Google Contacts or Simple Contacts. These are not affected by MIUI failures.

3. Lack of rights in the application
Android 10+ and MIUI 12+ require explicit permissions to access contacts and storage, and if they don't, the changes won't persist.
- Open Settings โ Applications โ Application Management โ Contacts โ Permissions.
- Make sure it's on: ๐ Contacts (reading and editing) ๐พ Storage (for export/import) ๐ถ Telephone (to determine numbers)
If permissions are disabled, turn them on and restart the phone, and check if an antivirus or an optimizer (such as Xiaomiโs Security) is blocking access.
- Open Security. โ โ๏ธ โ Auto-Start and Make sure Contacts are not blacklisted.
- In Settings โ Battery โ Power saving mode add Contacts to exceptions.
How to restore the base:
- Export and import: Export contacts to.vcf via Settings โ Contacts โ Import/Export โ Export to the device. Then import them back. This often corrects structure errors.
- App Data Reset: In Settings โ Apps โ Contacts โ Memory Press Clear Data. This will delete all local contacts, so pre-export them!
- Recovery via Mi Cloud: If sync with Mi Cloud has been enabled, try restoring contacts from backup: Settings โ Mi Account โ Mi Cloud โ Restore.
| Method of recovery | When to apply | Risks. |
|---|---|---|
| Exports/imports.vcf | Mild display failures | You may lose contact notes. |
| Cleaning the application data | Critical base errors | All local contacts are removed |
| Recovery from Mi Cloud | If synchronization was enabled | The old version of the contacts will return. |
| Resetting the phone to the factory | If nothing worked | Loss of all data (except for the SD-map) |
5. Memory problems of the device
If the phone runs out of space, Android can block the recording of new data, including changes in contacts. Check free space in Settings โ About Phone โ Memory.
Minimum requirements for stable operation of contacts:
- ๐ฑ 1 GB of free memory on internal storage.
- ๐๏ธ 500 MB on the system partition (checked through the ADB).
If memory is scarce:
- Delete unnecessary files (photos, videos, app cache).
- Move some of the data to SD-card (if supported).
- Clear the cache of system applications through Settings โ Memory โ Clear the cache.
- If nothing helps, do a soft reset (Settings โ Additional โ Resetting).
Xiaomi with MIUI 13+ has a hidden garbage cleaning feature:
adb shell pm trim-caches 1GThis command compulsorily clears the cache of all applications, but requires an unlocked bootloader and ADB.
๐ก
To free up space without deleting files, transfer rarely used applications to the SD-card (if any). To do this, select Storage in the application settings โ Change. โ SD-map.
6.Failures after MIUI update
MIUI updates often break the contacts' work.
- ๐ After updating to MIUI 14/15 Contacts are duplicated or lost.
- โ๏ธ Synchronization settings are reset to factory.
- ๐ต Contacts app stops opening.
How to fix it:
- Update rollback: If the problem appears immediately after the update, try rolling back. MIUI from the official website and run it through Settings โ The phone. โ Updating the system โ โฎ โ Select the update file.
- App Settings Reset: As described in Section 2, reset your Contacts and Google Play Services settings.
- Manual Sync: Turn off automatic sync and manually start it: Open Settings โ Accounts and Sync. Select Google Account โ Sync Contacts. Wait 5-10 minutes and check for changes.
If contacts are missing after the update, check the /sdcard/MIUI/backup/AllBackup folder โ sometimes MIUI automatically backs up before the update.
What if the contacts are duplicated after the update?
7. Viruses or malware
Rarely, but it happens: viruses block access to contacts or modify them.
- ๐ต Contacts disappear or change without your involvement.
- ๐ There are strange symbols or links in the rooms.
- ๐จ Xiaomiโs Security (antivirus) shows warnings.
How to check and clean:
- Install Malwarebytes or Dr.Web Light and scan the device.
- Check the list of installed apps for suspicious ones (for example, with names like Contacts Manager, Phone Boost).
- If a virus is found, delete it and reset your Contact Settings (as in Section 2).
Xiaomi has built-in protection:
- Open Security โ Scanner โ Deep Check.
- If threats are found, click Delete.
- Reboot your phone and check your contacts.
โ ๏ธ Warning: Some SEOs (such as Clean Master) may block access to contacts by masquerading as useful utilities.
8. Hardware problems (memory damage)
If none of these methods worked, it could be physical memory damage, and this is true for phones that:
- ๐ฅ Falling from a height or being struck.
- ๐ก๏ธ Overheated (for example, during charging).
- ๐ฆ Contacted with moisture.
Symptoms of hardware problems:
- Contacts are lost selectively (for example, only the letters "A-K").
- When editing, the phone will freeze or restart.
- In Settings โ Memory displays an incorrect amount (for example, "-1 GB free").
What to do:
- Check memory health via ADB: adb shell dumpsys meminfo If the output has lines with ERROR or FAIL, this confirms a hardware malfunction.
- Back up all the data and take the phone to the service center. You can't fix the damaged memory software.
On Xiaomi UFS-Storage devices (for example, Xiaomi) 12/13 Hardware failures are less common than on models with eMMC (Redmi) 9/Note 9).

If contacts disappear after physical impact on the phone (hit, fall), the problem is almost certainly hardware. Don't waste time on software methods - contact the service.
