If you own a Xiaomi smartphone, you've probably heard of Mi Cloud, a cloud service that offers to keep your data safe. But what is it really about? Why is it constantly reminding you to back up, and when you're setting up, you get a sign-in request? And most importantly, can you get rid of that service if you don't need it?
In this article, we will take a look at how Mi Cloud works, what functions it performs (and whether you need them), and how to disable sync, delete data from the cloud, or even deactivate your account.
Spoiler: You can completely remove Mi Cloud, but it's not always wise, and in some cases, just disable unnecessary options and we'll show you how to do it right.
What is Mi Cloud and why it is needed in Xiaomi smartphones
Mi Cloud is a cloud storage from Xiaomi, similar to Google Drive or iCloud. It is designed to:
- π Automatic backup of contacts, messages, photos and applications.
- π± Sync data between devices (e.g. if you have a smartphone and a Xiaomi tablet).
- π Search for lost phone through Find Device.
- π Remote locking of the device in case of theft.
- π File storage (up to 5 GB free, then paid rates).
Xiaomi is actively offering users to register for Mi Account and enable backup by default, which is logical: it is profitable for the manufacturer to use their ecosystem. But in practice, many functions are duplicated by Google services (for example, Google Photos or Google Contacts), so Mi Cloud may be superfluous.
Itβs important to understand that Mi Cloud is not just an app, itβs part of MIUIβs firmware. Even if youβre not using it, some processes (like checking licenses or updating) can access Xiaomi servers in the background.
How Mi Cloud affects the smartphone: pros and cons
Before deciding whether to remove Mi Cloud or not, it is worth assessing its real benefits and possible risks.
| The benefits of Mi Cloud | Cons of Mi Cloud |
|---|---|
| πΉ Free 5GB of storage (enough for contacts and photo parts). | πΈ Persistent backup notifications. |
| πΉ Ability to remotely lock or locate a lost phone. | πΈ Synchronization can consume traffic and battery power. |
| πΉ Automatic data recovery when a smartphone is reset or replaced. | πΈ Some features of MIUI (e.g., themes or cloud services) may stop working after deleting an account. |
| πΉ Integration with other Xiaomi devices (smart watches, speakers, routers). | πΈ The data is stored on Xiaomi servers, which raises privacy concerns (especially for users in Russia and the EU). |
One of the main hidden disadvantages: if you forget the password from Mi Account, unlocking the smartphone after a reset will be extremely difficult. Xiaomi binds the device to the account, and without it, some functions (for example, unlocking the bootloader) become unavailable.
β οΈ Warning: If you plan to sell or transfer a smartphone to another person, be sure to log out of Mi Account and reset the device via Settings β Additional β Restore and Reset. Otherwise, the new owner may face lockdown!
Can you delete Mi Cloud completely and what happens if you do it?
It is technically possible to remove Mi Cloud completely, but the consequences depend on how you do it:
- π΅ Synchronization Disconnection (the most secure option) β the service remains in the system, but does not consume resources.
- ποΈ Delete data from the cloud β the storage is cleared, but the account remains active.
- π₯ Completely deleting Mi Account is the most radical way, but it is fraught with problems (see below).
What happens if you delete your Mi Account:
- β Find Device, cloud themes, some features MIUI will stop working.
- β It will not be possible to unlock the fastboot for custom firmware installation.
- β When you reset your smartphone, you may be asked to enter your old account data (even if you deleted it!).
- β But the backup notifications and the background activity of the service will disappear.
If you still want to get rid of Mi Cloud, it is best to try to disable sync first β this is usually enough to keep the service out of the way.

What to do if Mi Cloud is not deleted or errors occur
Sometimes when trying to disable or remove Mi Cloud, there are problems.
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Can't get out of the Mi Account | Xiaomi servers are not available or network error | Check your internet connection, reboot your smartphone, or try it later |
