If you've ever looked at the standard Calendar app on a Xiaomi smartphone, you might have noticed a strange item called Local Calendar, which, unlike the usual Google Calendar or Mi Account, doesn't sync with the cloud, doesn't require authorization, and generally behaves like a black box. What is it, why is it needed, and how to use it correctly, we'll look at this guide.
A local calendar is an embedded in MIUI's firmware event database that is stored exclusively on the device and not tied to accounts. It works even without the Internet, it doesn't depend on Xiaomi or Google servers, but it has its limitations. For example, when you reset your phone, all the entries from the local calendar disappear irrevocably. Why then does this feature still exist in modern smartphones? The answer lies in security, privacy and some hidden use cases.
How a local calendar differs from a cloud calendar
The main difference is the storage space, and the cloud calendars (Google, Mi Account, Outlook) sync with the servers and are available on all the devices you log in to, while the local calendar stores events on only one phone, like a notebook in your pocket, with several key benefits:
- 🔒 Privacy: Events are not transmitted over the network and do not fall into the hands of third parties (including Xiaomi or Google).
- ⚡ Autonomy: works without the Internet, does not require authorization and does not “brake” when the connection is poor.
- 🛡️ Security: it is impossible to hack or delete data remotely (for example, if you lose an account).
But there are some serious downsides: First, there's no backup: if your phone breaks or you reset, all the records will go missing; second, there's no synchronization, events won't show up on your tablet, computer, or other smartphone; and third, the local MIUI calendar doesn't support reminders through Google Assistant or other voice assistants.
⚠️ Note: If you use a local calendar for important things (such as medical records or work appointments), be sure to export it manually through Settings. → System system → Backup. Unlike cloud services, there's no automatic backup!
| Parameter | Local calendar | Cloud Calendar (Google/Mi Account) |
|---|---|---|
| Data storage | Only on the device. | On the company's servers. |
| Synchronization | Absent. | Between all devices |
| Access without the Internet | Yes. | Only cached data |
| Backup | Only manually. | Automatically. |
| Support for reminders | Only through MIUI | Google Assistant, Siri, and others. |
Where is the local calendar on Xiaomi and how to open it
There are two ways to find a local calendar: through the standard Calendar app, or through system settings.
- Open the Calendar app (Date Icon).
- Slip on three horizontal lines (☰) top-left.
- In the calendar list, select a Local Calendar (usually shown in gray).
If this item is missing, it must be activated in the settings:
- Go to Settings → Applications → Application Management.
- Find the calendar and open its settings.
- Slip the storage → Data management → Local calendar.
- Activate the switch if it is switched off.
On some models (such as the Xiaomi 13 Pro or Redmi Note 12), the local calendar may be hidden by default, in which case it can be enabled through Settings → Accounts and Sync → Local Data.
When to use a local calendar instead of a cloud
Despite the limitations, there are situations where the local calendar is more useful than the cloud.
- 🔐 Confidential appointments: if you keep a record of sensitive events (such as doctor visits or legal consultations) that you do not want to store on Google servers.
- 👥 Sharing without an account: You can export events to a file and transfer it to another person without being linked to their Google account.
Another non-obvious case is corporate use, where some companies prohibit employees from using personal cloud accounts on their work phones, and local calendars are becoming an alternative to business planning without breaking the rules. IT-division.
⚠️ Note: If you use a local calendar for work tasks, export it to.ics file regularly (via Settings) → Export/Import: If you lose your phone, it will be impossible to recover data!
💡
To quickly add an event to your local calendar, tell Xiao AI’s voice assistant, “Add an appointment to your local calendar at [date].” This will work even without the internet!
How to Transfer Events from Cloud to Local Calendar (and Back)
If you choose to switch from Google Calendar to local (or vice versa), you can manually transfer data.
Exports from the cloud calendar:
- Open the Google Calendar in your browser.
- Click on three dots next to the desired calendar → Settings and Sharing.
- Scroll down and select Export Calendar (.zip file with.ics inside).
Import to the local Xiaomi calendar:
- Copy the.ics file to your phone (for example, via Telegram or Explorer).
- Open the Calendar app → ☰ → Calendar management.
- Select Import/Export → Import and specify the file.
- In the calendar list, select Local Calendar as the import target.
To reverse migrate (from local to cloud), repeat the steps, but at the last stage, select a Google account instead of local storage.

Common problems with the local calendar and their solutions
The MIUI local calendar can be unpredictable, and here are the typical mistakes and ways to fix them:
1. Events are not displayed
If you add a record but it doesn't appear in the calendar:
- Check that the Calendar app settings include a Local Calendar display (☰ → Calendar management).
- Restart your phone – sometimes MIUI doesn’t update data in the background.
- Remove the app cache: Settings → Apps → Calendar → Storage → Clear the cache.
2.Duplicate events
This happens when you re-import the same.ics file to eliminate:
- Export the current calendar to the file.
- Remove all events from the local calendar.
- Import data again by selecting the option to Replace existing data.
3.Reminders don't work
The local calendar uses MIUI system notifications, which can be blocked by battery optimization:
- Open Settings → Battery → Battery Optimization
- Find a calendar and select No Limits.
- Check that the application is allowed to autorun: Settings → Permissions → Autorun.
What if the calendar disappeared after the MIUI update?
Hidden local calendar features you didn’t know about
Xiaomi’s local calendar has more than it looks. Here are some undocumented features:
- 📅 Color tags for events: Unlike cloud calendars, you can assign an arbitrary color to each event (even if you are in the cloud). MIUI To do this, tap on the calendar icon when creating an event and select Local, then click on the color circle on the right.
- 🔄 Custom-interval recurring events: You can set up not only weekly/monthly repetitions, but also, for example, “every 3 days” or “every second Friday».
- 📎 File attachment: You can add a document, photo or audio recording (maximum 10 MB) to an event!
- 🌙 Dark theme for individual events: if you turn on the dark mode in the MIUI, Events on the local calendar will be displayed with a black background, even if the cloud calendars use a light theme.
Another interesting feature is hidden events, and if you add a symbol in the beginning of the event title! (exclamation point), it won't appear in the main list, but it will remain in search, which is convenient for sensitive recordings that you don't want to show on the home screen.
💡
Xiaomi’s local calendar is the only one in MIUI that supports attaching files to events, a feature not even available in Google’s Calendar on smartphones!
How to Restore and Restore a Local Calendar
Since the data is stored only on the device, it is the backup that falls on the shoulders of the user.
Manual export:
- Open the calendar. → ☰ → Calendar management.
- Choose Export/Import → Exports.
- Specify the Local Calendar as the source and save the.ics file to a safe location (such as Google Drive or computer).
Automatic reservations:
To remember about backups, set up automatic copying through Settings → System → Backup:
- Enable Local Backup.
- Select Calendar in the list of backup apps.
- Specify a schedule (for example, once a week) and a place to save (internal memory or Mi Cloud, but then it is not quite “local”).
For recovery:
- Import the.ics file through Calendar → Management → Import.
- If you use the MIUI backup, restore data through Settings → System → Recovery.
⚠️ Note:.ics files are not encrypted! If you store them in the cloud (Google Drive, Mi Cloud), archive them with a password (for example, through the use of a password). 7-Zip or WinRAR to protect sensitive data.
