Owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones often face the need to save important conversation, whether it is a business agreement or order confirmation. However, after completing a call, many users are lost, not realizing exactly where the system saved the audio file. The standard shell of MIUI or the new HyperOS has its own specific folder structure, which differs from the usual logic of other Android smartphones.
Finding recorded dialogs can be complicated by Google and hardware manufacturers’ tightening of privacy policies in recent firmware versions, which has led to standard functionality in some regions being able to work differently or be hidden. Where to look for call recording is a matter of understanding your device’s file system, as files can be stored in both the Phone app’s system folders and shared audio storage.
In this article, we will take a closer look at all possible ways to search for audio archives, review automatic recording settings, and answer questions related to regional restrictions, learn how to quickly access the desired file through the built-in Explorer or computer, and what to do if the recording function disappeared from the menu.
Search through the built-in phone application
The fastest and most obvious way to find a conversation you're interested in is to go directly to the app that made the call. On Xiaomi smartphones, the standard Phone app (often from Google or MIUI Dialer) is responsible for this. Open the app and go to the recent tab, which displays the history of all incoming and outgoing calls.
Find the number or contact you want on the list. If you've recorded a conversation, you'll see a special icon next to the number or name of the caller that looks like a tape recorder or tape tape recorder, and if you click on that icon or select "Record" from the call menu, you'll immediately start playing, which is the most convenient way to listen right after the call.
However, if you need to copy a file, send it or rename it, playback alone is not enough. The Phone application interface often lacks a direct Show in Folder button. You will need to use a system file manager to access the file itself, as we will discuss in the next section.
💡
If the record icon doesn’t appear in call history, check if it’s hidden in the extended call menu (three dots or arrow down), as the interface may vary depending on the MIUI version.
Navigation in File Manager: The Path to Files
The file management app on the device uses the Explorer system app (or Files) to find audio recordings of conversations, you need to know the exact structure of the directories, since they do not always lie on the surface. Most current versions of Android and MIUI shells, the path is as follows:
Open Explorer and go to Internal Drive. Then open folders sequentially: MIUI → sound_recorder → call_rec. It's in the last directory. call_rec All phone records are stored. The files are usually formatted.m4a or.mp3 and named according to the date and time of the call or contact name.
In some cases, especially on older firmware versions or when using third-party calls, the path may be different. An alternative route may look like Internal Storage → Recordings → Call Rec. If there are no files on the first path, it makes sense to check this directory. Also note that files can be hidden if the appropriate filter is enabled in the Explorer settings.
☑️ Verification of the availability of records
It is important to understand that when connecting a smartphone to a computer through USB-The folder structure is the same, so you can copy the audio files you want to use on your PC to archive. call_rec Drag them to a convenient place on your computer’s hard drive.
Set up automatic recording of conversations
So you can automate the function, so that you don't have to search for a record button every time you have an important conversation, and this is especially useful for entrepreneurs and support people who need to record every communication with a customer, and you can set it up directly in the Phone app.
Open Phone, click on the three dots in the top right corner (or the settings button) and select Record Settings. Here you will see the AutoWrite switch. Once activated, you can select the mode: record all numbers or only selected contacts. The second option requires adding the desired numbers to a special list.
| Setup parameter | Description of function | Recommended value |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic recording | Turns on or off the recording function without user involvement | VL (for important contacts) |
| Record all numbers. | Save every incoming and outgoing call | Off (saving space) |
| Notification of the record | Voice warning of the interlocutor about the beginning of the recording | VL (by law) |
| File format | Quality and type of stored audio | High (MP3/M4A) |
Note the item “Record Notification”: In most countries, the law requires that the interlocutor be notified that the conversation is being recorded, and when the option is turned on, the system will say the phrase “Conversation is recorded” at the beginning of the conversation, disabling this feature can be considered a violation of personal data law.
Why is the record menu missing?
The problem of lack of recording function in different regions
Users often wonder why my new Xiaomi doesn’t have a record button when it was on the old one?The answer lies in regional settings and legislation. Xiaomi, following Google’s rules and local laws, disables native recording in countries with tight privacy regulations, such as the European Union.
If you bought a smartphone with global firmware (Global ROM), but the region is set to "Germany" or "Poland", the recording function may not be. The solution is to change the region in the smartphone settings. Go to Settings → Additional → Region and select the country where recording is allowed, for example, "India", "Nepal" or "Serbia".
⚠️ Warning: Changes in region may affect some local services, weather widgets and system recommendations. After a change in region, the device may need to be rebooted to apply changes.
When you change region, go back to the Phone app and check for recording settings. 90% of the time, it comes up instantly. If that doesn't work, you may have Google Dialer installed on your device with the latest security updates that block recording even when you change region, leaving only third-party solutions.
Use of third-party applications for recording
If you can’t use regular funds, apps from the Google Play Market come to the rescue, but it is worth considering that modern versions of Android (starting at 10 and above) severely limit third-party programs’ access to the microphone and audio stream during a call.
Popular applications such as Call Recorder - Cube ACR or Automatic Call Recorder may require the installation of a special auxiliary application (App Connector) to bypass the system limitations. Without this, recording can only be done through a microphone, which means recording your voice and the voice of the interlocutor through a speaker, often with poor quality and extraneous noises.
When installing these programs, read permissions carefully. They will need access to their phone, microphone, contacts, and storage. After installing them, be sure to go to the settings of the app itself and turn on “Write via microphone” or a similar option if the standard method does not work. Also, in the Android settings under “Special features”, you need to give the application the appropriate rights.
💡
Third-party applications are a temporary solution, since Google regularly closes vulnerabilities that allow you to record in the background, so the functionality of such programs may stop working after the next system update.
Frequent problems and ways to solve them
Even when set up correctly, users can encounter various errors, the most common problem is that the record is cut off in the middle or the file is not saved, most often due to lack of free space on the internal drive or aggressive energy saving.
MIUI is known for its tight control of background processes, and if a Phone app or voice recorder is put to sleep by the system to save energy, the recording will be interrupted. To avoid this, find the Phone app in the installed program list, go to Battery, and select No Limits mode, which will prevent the system from forcibly shutting down the recording process.
Another problem is that there's no audio on the record, which happens when the speaker is on or Bluetooth headphones are used, which some systems can't mix correctly into the record, and in those cases, try turning off the speakerphone or using the phone's built-in speaker during a conversation.
⚠️ Attention: Regularly check the folder with records and clean it. directory overflow call_rec This can cause new records to stop being created or replace the oldest files without your knowledge.
If a file is corrupted and won't open, try playing it through a third-party media player, like VLC Player, which can read files with an incomplete header structure. Sometimes the file is intact, but the standard player can't decode it because of an indexing error.
