The cloning of applications in the shell of MIUI (and the new HyperOS) solves this problem without installing third-party software, providing a native and secure separation mechanism.
Known as App Cloning (or App Twin), the feature allows you to create an exact copy of installed software that works independently of the original, meaning you can log into a second WhatsApp or Telegram with a different phone number, receiving notifications on the same lock screen, a feature that is especially relevant for those who combine personal and work contacts on the same device.
In addition, system cloning is optimized for energy saving, which is critical for the autonomy of Xiaomi smartphones. Unlike emulators, which can consume significant CPU resources, the built-in mechanism uses system libraries, ensuring stable operation of background processes and timely delivery of push notifications.
Main use cases for cloning
The most obvious and popular scenario is the separation of communication channels, with many users buying the second. SIM-A card specifically for work or business, but it's inconvenient to carry two phones. Cloning allows you to combine all the inputs in one device, keeping a clear boundary between personal space and work tasks.
Another important application is managing multiple social media and gaming accounts. If you have a business account on Instagram or play on different servers in online games, the ability to quickly switch without constantly entering passwords and confirmation codes saves you time.
It’s also worth noting the family-friendly way that parents can clone a child’s app by setting up restricted access or content as long as the smartphone owner’s personal data remains on the main profile, creating a flexible system for accessing device features.
Technical Features of App Twin in MIUI
The mechanism is based on process isolation technology, in which a copy of the application receives a unique user ID in the Android system. For the operating system, the clone looks like a completely separate product, which allows it to store its data, cache and settings regardless of the original.

The process of activating the function is as simple as possible for developers, and it takes only a few seconds. You don't have to have superuser rights or set complex configurations. It's done through a standard settings menu.

To start, open your smartphone’s Settings menu. Scroll down to the App section and select App Cloning (some firmware versions may call it Double Apps). The list that opens will show all the programs that can be duplicated.
Find the right app, like Viber or Facebook, and activate the switch opposite it. The system will create a shortcut on the desktop with a characteristic icon (usually a yellow corner or a double symbol), and then you can run a clone and log in under the second number.

Problems with notifications and their resolution
One of the common problems with clones is not getting notifications in time. Since Android aggressively manages background processes to save charge, the system can kill the process of the cloned application, considering it less important.
To ensure delivery of messages, you need to set up autostart and work in the background. Go to Settings → Apps → All applications, find a clone (it will be marked with a twin icon) and go to the Battery section.
Select No Limits mode, which will prevent the system from stopping the application process even if the screen is turned off, and it is also recommended to enable auto-run for mission-critical messengers so that they start immediately after the phone is turned on.
⚠️ Warning: No Limits mode increases battery consumption, only use it for cloned applications that need to run in the background all the time (e.g., WhatsApp working).
Impact on productivity and battery
The presence of running clones inevitably affects the resources of the device: two active instances of Telegram or VK consume more RAM than one. On budget models with 3-4 GB of memory, this can lead to more frequent unloading of background applications.
The processor also gets an extra load, especially if cloned applications play media content or make video calls, but on modern medium-to-high-end Snapdragon and Helio processors, this impact is almost invisible in everyday use.

Data security in cloned applications
From a security perspective, cloned applications are isolated, but they use the same file system, which means that theoretically, if a virus penetrates one application, it can access files that are readable/writeable in shared memory.
However, login data (logins, passwords, authorization tokens) are stored in secure system storage (Keystore), which is separated for each instance of the application, so stealing authorization data from the clone through the original (and vice versa) is impossible by standard methods.
It is recommended to regularly update both the main system and the applications themselves through the official Google Play store or GetApps. This closes vulnerabilities that could be used for interprocess interaction.
