Video recording from the screen on Xiaomi: all the ways for MIUI 12/13/14

Recording the screen on Xiaomi smartphones is a challenge faced by gamers, streamers, educators and users who want to save a moment from the app. Despite its apparent simplicity, the process has nuances, from versions of MIUI to restrictions on recording secure applications (for example, banking or Netflix).

The feature of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices is that screen recording functionality is not only model-dependent, but also firmware version-dependent. For example, MIUI 14 has support for recording internal sound (without a microphone), which was not the case in earlier versions. Some budget models (such as Redmi 9A) may not support high-resolution recording due to hardware limitations. We tested all methods on current devices and collected checklists for each method.

Important: If you want to record with internal sound (for example, for streams or game reviews), the standard Screen Recorder tool may not work — you will need workarounds.

1.Integrated screen recording in MIUI: where to find and how to set up

The easiest way to do this is to use the standard Screen Recorder tool, which is pre-installed on all Xiaomi smartphones with MIUI 10 and later, but its menu layout has changed depending on the firmware version.

• 📱 MIUI 12/13/14: Swipe down the notification panel → Find the Screen Recorder icon (if not, click Edit and add to the Quick Access Panel).
• 🔧 MIUI 11 and older: Go to Settings → Special facilities → Screen recording.
• 🎮 For game modes: In some models (e.g. Black Shark or Black Shark) POCO F3 GT) Screen recording is available directly from the Game Turbo menu.

Once you activate the recording, you'll see a floating panel with control buttons.

• 🎤 Turn on/off microphone (voice recording).
• ⚙️ Change the permission (options available from the 480p before 1080p, model-wise).

Limitations of the built-in tool:

• 🚫 No internal sound recording (mic or no sound only).
• 🔒 Does not work in secure applications (banks, Netflix, some games).
• 📉 Lags are possible on weak devices (for example, Redmi). 8A).

2. Run it and provide all the permissions you have requested (including Overlaying on top of other apps).
3. Go to the recording settings (⚙️ → Audio Source and select Internal Audio.
4. Click Start Recording and confirm the start of the recording via a notification.

⚠️ Note: On devices with MediaTek Helio G (such as the Redmi Note 10), recording internal sound can lead to artifacts in the video. In this case, reduce the bitrate in the application settings to 8 Mbps.

3.Recording gameplay on Xiaomi: features for POCO and Black Shark

POCO and Black Shark have advanced screen recording capabilities optimized for gameplay, such as the POCO F4 GT, which has a built-in Game Recorder mode that allows:

• 🎮 Record the games in resolution before 1080p@120FPS (play-back).
• 🔊 Capture the sound of a game without a microphone.
• 📊 display FPS and processor temperature in real time.

To activate Game Recorder:

1. Open the game, swipe from left to right to call the Game Turbo game menu.
2. Click on the camera (or record) icon.
3. Select resolution and bitrate (recommended 1080p@60FPS with a bitrate of 12 Mbps for balance of quality and file size).

On Black Shark 5 Pro, writing to 4K@60FPS is only possible when connected to a power source - otherwise the 1080p limit.

4. Problem Solving: Lags, black screen, no sound

If you have problems recording, check the following points:

For devices with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1/2 (such as Xiaomi 13 Pro), overheating can occur when writing in 4K.

• 📉 Reduce the permit to 1440p.
• 🧊 Use a cooling stand.
• 🔋 Connect charging (recording mode consumes up to 30% of battery per hour).

If the recording stops at 30 seconds, check the limitations in the battery settings: go to Settings → Battery → Battery Optimization and turn off the optimization for the recording application.

5. Alternative methods: recording via PC or other phone

If the built-in tools don’t fit, you can record the Xiaomi screen using external devices:

Through another smartphone
