Open apps on Xiaomi TVs can slow down, take up RAM, and even lead to freezes, especially for models with limited resources such as the Mi TV 4A or Redmi Smart TV X. Unlike smartphones, where swipe up is enough, on TVs, the process of closing tabs is not always intuitive.
In this article, we'll look at all the current ways, from standard remote control techniques to hidden features in settings, how to close all applications at once, how to remove the hanging processes, and why sometimes it's better to use not full closure, but memory optimization through system tools, and also look at the features for different versions of MIUI TV firmware and TV models.
Why you should close tabs on Xiaomi TV
Every open app on Xiaomi Smart TV consumes resources, even if it is folded, and this results in:
- π’ Slowing down the interfaceβlags when switching channels or opening menus.
- π₯ Overheating - especially on low-cost models without active cooling.
- πΆ Connection issues β Wi-Fi or Bluetooth may be disabled due to memory shortages.
- π Automatic reboots β the system forcibly closes processes if RAM is full.
Not all apps should be shut down, however, such as system services (such as com.miui.tv.launcher) that fail to come to an end may cause an interface failure, and some streaming platforms (such as Netflix or YouTube) are optimized for the background and do not load the system.
It is important to understand the difference between folded and active applications: the former consume almost no resources, and the latter (for example, a running game or broadcast) can load the processor by 50% or higher. Check this in Settings β About TV β System Status.
Method 1: Closing through the Multitasking Menu (Remote)
The easiest way is to use the multitasking button on the remote, which is on all modern Xiaomi models (except the earliest versions of the Mi TV 3).
- Click the Multitasking button (usually located under the Home button and looks like two rectangles).
- You'll see a list of open apps on the screen, and use the arrows on the remote to pick out the ones you don't want.
- Click OK, then select Close (or Remove on some firmware).
- To close all tabs, immediately press and hold the Multitasking button for 3 seconds and the option Close everything will appear.
Upload important data (for example, save in-game)
Make sure there are no active broadcasts
Close applications with auto-update (e.g. weather)
Check if the application is used for background music-->
On some remotes (e.g., from Mi TV Q1), the multitasking button may be called Recent Apps or have a three-line icon. If there is no button, try the Back + Home combination, holding them for 2 seconds.
β οΈ Warning: On TVs with MIUI TV 3.0 or lower, there may be no mass closing function, in which case you have to close applications one at a time or use a memory reset (section 5).
Method 2: Forced stop through settings
If an application has been suspended and does not close through multitasking, you can force it to stop, and this method is also useful for removing system processes that are not displayed in the standard menu.
Instructions:
- Go to Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Select the desired application from the list (sorted alphabetically or by memory use).
- Press Forced Stop (or Stop on English firmware).
- Confirm Action. Some apps (like Google Play Services) can restart automatically.
To speed up the process, use the filter for memory use:
- π Open Settings β About TV β Memory.
- Click on the RAM usage schedule.
- The system will show a list of the most βgluttonousβ applications β they can be closed right from here.
What to do if there is no "Forced Stop" button?
This method is suitable for deep cleaning, but it is often not recommended. System applications (for example, com.droidlogic.appinstaller) when forced to close can cause errors in the application store or remote.
Method 3: Voice control (for models with Google Assistant)
Xiaomi TVs with Google Assistant support (such as Mi TV Q2 or Redmi Smart TV X2022) allow you to close applications with voice.
Commands for voice assistant:
| Purpose | Team in Russian | Team in English |
|---|---|---|
| Close the current application | "Close [appendix name]" | "Close [app name]" |
| Close all applications | "Close all open applications" | "Close all open apps" |
| Show open applications | "Show multitasking." | "Show recent apps" |
| Clear the memory. | "Clear the TV's memory" | "Clear TV memory" |
Important: Voice commands only work if:
- π€ The microphone on the remote or TV is turned on (Settings β Voice Control).
- π The TV is connected to the Internet (commands are processed by Google's cloud service).
- π The noise level in the room is not more than 70 dB (otherwise the assistant does not recognize speech).
β οΈ Warning: On TVs with MIUI TV 2.0 or lower, voice control may not support Russian, in which case use English commands or update the software.
Method 4: Use buttons on the TV (without remote)
If the remote is broken or dead, you can close the apps using physical buttons on the TV body, and their location depends on the model:
- πΊ Mi TV 4/4A/4C: The buttons are on the lower frame on the right (below the logo).
- πΊ Redmi Smart TV X: The buttons are hidden under the sliding panel at the bottom.
- πΊ Mi TV Q1/Q2: Touch buttons on the back (to be swiped with your finger).
Procedure:
- Find the Menu (or Settings) button, usually marked with a three-line icon.
- Press and hold it for 5 seconds until the multitasking menu appears.
- Use the Volume +/- buttons to navigate the list of applications.
- Press Menu again to close the selected application.
Some models (e.g. Mi TV P1) have an infrared receiver to control from a smartphone instead of buttons.
- Download the Mi Remote app on your phone.
- Connect to your TV via Wi-Fi (both devices must be on the same network).
- Use the virtual remote in the application to close tabs.
π‘
If the buttons on the TV don't respond, try disconnecting it from the network for 1 minute, then turning it back on. This will reset the temporary freezes of the hardware controllers.
Method 5: Resetting memory and optimizing the system
If the TV is slowing down even after all the applications are closed, a complete memory reset will help, which removes all background processes, including system processes, and returns performance to its original state.
How to reset:
- Go to Settings β About TV β Memory.
- Choose Clear Memory (or Optimize).
- Confirm the action. It'll take 10 to 30 seconds.
For deep optimization:
- π§Ή Go to Settings β Apps β Clear cache and delete temporary files.
- π Reboot through Settings β System β Reboot.
- π₯ Update the software to the latest version (System Update section).
On Xiaomi TVs with the Amlogic S905 chipset (models 2018-2020), a memory reset can lead to a short-term Wi-Fi shutdown.
π‘
Resetting does not delete personal data (accounts, saved passwords), but it closes all processes, including system processes. Use it if other methods have not worked.
Frequent problems and solutions
Sometimes, closing tabs doesn't solve the brake problem. Let's look at the typical situation and its causes:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Applications open themselves after closing | Autostart in the application settings | Turn off auto-start in Settings β Apps β [name] β Auto-run |
| There is no βClose Everythingβ button in multitasking. | Outdated firmware | Update the software through Settings β System Update |
| TV overheats after tab closures | Dust or cooler malfunction | Clean the vents or contact the service |
| Voice commands are down. | The microphone is off or the internet is off. | Check the settings in Settings β Voice control |
If after closing all tabs the TV still brakes, check:
- π‘ Internet speed β slow connection can cause lags in streaming services.
- π₯οΈ Processor temperature β when overheating above 80Β°C, trottling (performance restriction) is triggered.
- π Power supply condition β unstable voltage leads to failures.
