Why to tie the card to the smartphone Xiaomi and what you need
A bank card on a Xiaomi phone is not just a convenience, it's a real time saving. Imagine no longer carrying a wallet, looking for a change for transportation, or worrying that the card will be lost. Just one touch of the smartphone to the terminal and the payment is gone. But how does it work on Redmi or POCO or Mi devices? And most importantly, is it safe?
Xiaomi smartphones support several ways to link cards: through the branded service Mi Pay, universal Google Pay (now Google Wallet), and mobile banks. Each option has its own nuances, from availability in your region to restrictions on banks. For example, Mi Pay does not work in all countries, and Google Wallet may not support cards of some local banks.
What's required to tie:
- π± Xiaomi smartphone on Android 8.0 and higher (for Google Wallet β not lower than Android 5.0)
- π³ A valid contactless payment card (usually marked with the PayPass logo or PayWave)
- π Connected mobile Internet or Wi-Fi (to check the card by the bank)
- π Unlocked bootloader (only for Mi Pay on some firmware)
Important: If you use Xiaomi with custom firmware (like LineageOS), some payment services may block card binding due to a security breach, in which case only returning to the official MIUI will help.
Method 1: Linking a card via Mi Pay (official Xiaomi service)
Mi Pay is Xiaomiβs own payment service integrated into MIUI firmware. It supports contactless payments via NFC, but it doesnβt work in all countries. By 2026, the service is officially available in China, India, Russia (with restrictions) and some countries in Europe. You can check support for your region in the application settings.
To add a card to Mi Pay:
- Open the Mi Pay app (if not, download from the MIUI App Store).
- Click Add Card and select the type: debit or credit.
- Enter the card data manually or scan it with the camera.
- Confirm the transaction via SMS or push notification from the bank.
- Come up with it. PIN-payment code (it will be requested at each payment).

- π± Bring the top of the smartphone to the terminal (where the antenna is located). NFC).
- π’ Enter. PIN-Mi Pay code (not to be confused with the PIN-card-code!).
- β Wait for the beep to signal a successful payment.
Method 2: Add a map to Google Wallet (formerly Google Pay)
Google Wallet (formerly Google Pay) is a universal contactless payment solution that works on all Xiaomi smartphones with NFC support. Unlike Mi Pay, this service is available in most countries, including Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and the EU. The main advantage is the wide support of banks and the ability to store not only cards, but also tickets, passes, discount cards.
Instructions for adding a map:
- Install the Google Wallet app from Google Play (unless preinstalled).
- Open the application and click Add Card β Payment card.
- Select a bank from the list or enter the card details manually (number, expiration date, CVC).
- Confirm the card via SMS or a banking application (for example, Sberbank Online, Tinkoff, Alpha-Click).
- Accept the terms of use and wait for activation (may take up to 10 minutes).

π‘
If the bank does not support Google Wallet, try adding a card through the bankβs own app (e.g. Sberbank Online or Tinkoff), often with the option βAdd to Google Payβ even for unofficially supported cards.
Method 3: Linking the card through a mobile bank (Sberbank Online, Tinkoff, etc.)
Many banks offer their own solutions for contactless payments via smartphone, for example, Sberbank Online allows you to link a card to a phone without Google Wallet or Mi Pay.
- π« Your bank does not support Google Wallet.
- π You are in a region where Mi Pay is not available.
- π You do not want to use third-party payment services.
Letβs look at the example of Sberbank:
- Open the Sberbank Online application and log in.
- Go to the Maps section and select the desired card.
- Click Pay by phone β Add to Google Pay (yes, even if you donβt use Google Pay directly).
- Confirm the operation via SMS or biometrics.
- The card is now available for payment via NFC.
For Tinkoff Bank, the process is even simpler:
- In the Tinkoff app, select a map.
- Pay for the icon with your phone.
- Choose Google Pay or Samsung Pay (yes, even Xiaomi!).
- Follow the instructions β the system will redirect you to the desired application.

How to check if the card has been successfully added

How to protect payments via phone
One of the biggest fears users have is stealing money when they lose their phone, but contactless payments through Xiaomi are better protected than a physical card.
- π Every payment requires unlocking your phone (PIN, faceprint ID).
- π³ Card data is not stored on the phone β instead, a virtual number (token) is used).
- π If you lose your phone, you can remotely delete all payment data via Find My Device (for Google Wallet) or Mi Account (for Mi Pay).
Additional security measures:
- π Set up the hard one. PIN-Code for unlocking the phone (at least 6 characters).
- π± Do not install applications from unknown sources β they can intercept data. NFC.
- π Update your firmware regularly MIUI β In new versions, vulnerabilities are closed.
- π¨ Include payment notifications in the bank app.

Attention: If you sell or transfer your Xiaomi to another person, be sure to delete all associated cards: In Mi Pay: Settings β Delete all cards. In Google Wallet: Settings β Payments β Delete card. In mobile bank: find the "Play by phone" section and deactivate the card. Even after the settings reset (Hard Reset), some data can be saved!
Frequent problems and their solutions
The map binding doesn't always go smoothly, but here are the most common mistakes and ways to correct them:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| "The service is not available in your area" (Mi Pay) | Country-specific restriction | Change your phone region to a supported one (like India) or use a VPN when adding a card. |
| "The map is not supported" (Google Wallet) | The bank is not working with Google. | Add a card via a mobile bank or issue a virtual card in a supported bank |
| Terminal doesn't see the phone | NFC is disabled or faulty | Check your NFC settings, restart your phone, try another terminal |
| βActivation errorβ after data entry | The Bank's Problems | Call the bank and check if the card is allowed to be linked to the phone |
| Mi Pay app is not available | Removed or not preinstalled | Download from the App Store MIUI or install via APK (only from the official Xiaomi website!) |
If none of these methods helped, check:
- π± Compatibility of your Xiaomi model with NFC (For example, Redmi Note 8 does not support contactless payments. POCO X3 Pro - supports).
- π§ Root rights or custom firmware β they block payment services.
- π‘ Internet connection stability β without it, card verification will not pass.
