Modern Xiaomi smartphones running MIUI shells or the new HyperOS offer users a lot of flexibility in how to customize the interface. However, it often happens that after a system update, accidentally delete or reset the settings, the icon of the desired application simply disappears from the desktop, which causes panic among inexperienced users who begin to think that the program is removed irrevocably. In fact, in most cases, the software remains in the deviceβs memory, just its label was hidden or moved.
Recovery takes only a few minutes if you know where to look for missing interface elements. The Android system that underlies Xiaomi firmware allows you to flexibly manage the list of installed programs and their display. The instructions below will help you return lost icons, customize the display in the menu and even create convenient widgets for quick launch.
Before you start complex manipulations, it is worth checking the most obvious places. Often users accidentally transfer icons to folders or other pages of the desktop, forgetting about it. In some cases, the problem lies in the settings of the launcher, which stopped displaying certain elements due to cache error.
If you're in a situation where an application is on the installed list but you can't run it, don't rush to reset it completely. There are plenty of regular tools available to fix shortcuts without losing data. Let's take a look at the basic methods to solve this common problem.
Search and run through Application Manager
The most reliable way to find a missing program is to use the system storage of all installed files. In the Xiaomi shell, this component is called the Application Manager (or App Manager), which displays a complete list of all the software that has ever been installed on the device, including system services and hidden components.
To find the application you want, open Settings and scroll through the list to the App. Select All Apps. You can search the name on the list that opens, or you can visually find the item you want to use. If the program is present here and has the status of "Installed", then it is fully functional.
Click on the program name in the list, and you'll see a page with detailed information where you'll see the Start and Delete buttons, and clicking on the Start button will force the app to open even if it's not on the screen, and that's the first step to re-establishing the shortcut.
β οΈ Warning: If the Start button is inactive (gray), it means that the application has been stopped by the system or has a critical error. In this case, try first pressing Stop and then again launching".
For some system services, such as Google Play Services or Mi Cloud components, the startup button may not be available by default because they run in the background. They donβt need to be displayed, they are activated automatically when other programs are running.
Restore the shortcut through the menu of all applications
The standard MIUI and HyperOS configuration uses a mode where all installed programs are in a separate menu called upwards by swipe. The desktop is only for widgets and select shortcuts. To bring an application from a hidden list to the home screen, you need to perform simple actions.
Swipe up the center of the screen to open the menu of all the apps. Find the program you want in the list or search. Hold your finger on the app icon and hold it for about a second. The system goes into editing mode, and you can drag the icon to any free space on your desktop.
- π± Press the icon in the app menu and drag it to the free home screen cell.
- π To create a folder, drag one icon over another already on the desktop.
- ποΈ To remove the shortcut from the screen, drag it to the top of the screen in the βDeleteβ zone (the application itself will remain in memory).
If the icon disappears immediately after dragging it or returns to its place, it may be activated energy saving mode or there is a limit on auto-start. Check the battery settings for a particular application, allowing it to work in the background.
It's important to understand the difference between removing the shortcut and deleting the app itself. When you drag an icon into the shopping cart in the menu mode of all apps, you just remove the quick access. The program itself stays in the phone's memory and continues to take up space if it's not deleted through the Manager.
Configure the display in the editing mode of the desktop
Xiaomi shells allow you to hide apps right out of desktop editing mode, which is a useful feature for child protection or for cleaning up visual noise, but sometimes it leads to confusion: If you accidentally hide a program, it will stop showing up in the All Apps menu.
To check if the app is hidden, go to edit mode. To do this, you need to pinch with two fingers on the desktop or hold an empty area for a long time. In the lower corner of the screen, find the Hidden Applications button (often looks like a folder with a minus or just text).
In the window that opens, you'll see a list of programs that have been forcibly hidden, and if the app you want is there, just click on the cross next to the icon or drag it back to the active zone, and then it'll be visible again in the general list.
| Action. | The result | Where to find out. |
|---|---|---|
| Removal of label | The icon disappears from the screen | Desktop/Menu |
| Hiding the application | The program is nowhere to be seen. | Editing mode |
| Deletion of the annex | Complete deletion of files | Settings/Dispatcher |
| Stopping the annex | Temporary suspension of work | Application Manager |
The concealment feature is especially relevant for models with Second Space. If you use this mode, check if the app is in the guest profile or in the second space. You can switch between them through settings or a special shortcut in the notification curtain.

Using widgets for quick access
Sometimes the user needs to not only restore the standard icon, but also create more convenient access to specific functions of the application. Xiaomi shell allows you to bring to the desktop widgets β mini versions of programs that perform tasks.
To add a widget, press the empty area on your desktop and select Widgets. In the directory that opens, find the app you want. Most programs, such as Calendar, Weather, or Music, have multiple design options.
Choose the appropriate size and style of the widget, then click Add widget or drag it to the screen. Widgets can display relevant information without having to open the app itself, which greatly speeds up interaction with the smartphone.
- β° Watch widgets show time and date in different formats.
- π Calendar allows you to see the schedule of meetings directly on the main screen.
- π΅ Music widgets allow you to control playback without entering the player.
Keep in mind that widgets consume more battery life than regular icons, as they constantly update data. It is not recommended to oversaturate the desktop with heavy widgets with live animations if you have an old phone model.
π‘
Use widgets only for the most important applications. A widget-filled screen not only consumes the battery, but also slows down the rendering of the interface when you scroll through.
Solving problems with launcher and system cache
In rare cases, the disappearance of icons can be caused by a malfunction of the system launcher, the component responsible for building the interface. If standard methods do not help, you should try to clear the launcher cache. This will not delete your data, but reset the settings of the icons.
Go to Settings -> Apps -> All Apps. Find System Launcher (or System Launcher) on the list. Click on it and select Clear -> Clear cache. If the problem is not solved, you can try Clean everything, but then the location of all icons will return to the factory.
Another reason could be the βSimple Modeβ feature (for older adults) that changes the size of the icons and hides the extra apps, check in the settings if this mode is activated, and switch to βStandardβ if necessary.
β οΈ Note: Before clearing the launcher data (βClear Allβ), make sure you remember the device password, as in some versions MIUI This can lead to a temporary locking of the security screen.
If the icons are missing after the system update, there may be a conflict of versions, in which case it is recommended to check for updates in the About Phone menu. Often Xiaomi releases patches that correct interface display errors in new versions of Android.
Creating shortcuts for web applications (PWA)
Modern browsers like Chrome or Yandex allow you to display sites on the desktop as full-fledged applications, this is called PWA (Progressive Web App), which is useful if the service does not have an official application in the Play Market or you do not want to install it.
Open your browser and go to the desired site. Click on the browser menu (three dots in the corner) and select Add to the home screen. The system will prompt you to confirm the name of the shortcut. Once confirmed, an icon will appear on the desktop that will open the site in a separate window without the browser frame.
This is a great way to bring to the Xiaomi screen those services that are not officially supported or have been removed from the Google Play store, such shortcuts work independently of the main browser and look like native applications.
βοΈ Checking the application's display
If the site changes its structure, the shortcut may stop displaying content correctly, requiring re-addition.
