Why do we need to record calls and what the law says
The ability to record phone conversations on the Xiaomi Mi 10 is useful in a variety of situations, from fixing important business agreements to saving memorable conversations with loved ones. However, before activating this feature, it is worth remembering the legal aspects. In most countries (including Russia), unilateral recording of a conversation without notifying the interlocutor is allowed only for personal purposes, for example, to record threats or evidence in court, the use of such recordings for commercial purposes or public distribution without the consent of participants can entail liability.
Technically, the MIUI-based Mi 10 supports built-in call recording, but availability depends on the firmware version and regional restrictions. For example, in European MIUI builds, this feature is often disabled due to local privacy laws, and in such cases you will have to use third-party applications, which we will also discuss below.
Important: If you plan to use the records for legal purposes, notify the person in advance of the recording, which will save you from potential problems with the law and ethical standards.
Verification of MIUI version and availability of the function
Before you try to enable a record, make sure your version of MIUI supports this option.
- Open the Settings. โ The phone.
- Scroll down to the MIUI version.
- Remember or write down the build number (e.g. MIUI 14.0.5 Stable).
The built-in recording function is available in the following cases:
- ๐ Global and Chinese firmware (except European assemblies) MIUI EU).
- ๐ฑ Versions MIUI 12 and newer (the Mi 10 was originally installed) MIUI 11, but you can update through Settings โ Update of the PO).
- ๐ Unlocked bootloader (if you use custom firmware, such as Xiaomi.eu or LineageOS).
If your version of MIUI does not support recording, you can try updating or using alternative methods (for more on these in the following sections).
โ ๏ธ Note: Update the firmware through OTA (over the air) may reset some settings. Before updating, back up your data via Settings โ Additionally. โ Backup and reset.
Enabling built-in call recording
If your firmware supports the function, you can activate it in a few steps:
- Open the Phone app (the tube icon on the home screen).
- Click on three dots in the upper right corner (โฎ) and select Settings.
- Go to the Recording of conversations (or Call recording in English).
- Activate the Write automatically switch or select Write manually (if you want to control the process).
After activation during the call, a recording icon will appear on the screen (๐ค). Click on it to start or stop the call fixation.Ready records are saved in the CallRecord folder in the phone's internal memory (path: /storage/emulated/0/CallRecord).
โ๏ธ Preparation for call recording
If you don't have a Conversation Record in your settings, your firmware doesn't support it, so move to the next section with third-party apps.
Third-party recording applications
If the built-in feature is not available, you can use third-party solutions, and we tested some popular applications and selected the most reliable ones:
| Annex | Features | Cons | Reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cube Call Recorder ACR | High quality recording, cloud storage, VoIP support (WhatsApp, Viber). | The paid version for advanced features, sometimes glitching at MIUI. | Google Play |
| Call Recorder โ Automatic | Automatic recording, spam call filtering, integration with Google Drive. | Advertising in the free version requires permission to access contacts. | Google Play |
| Boldbeast Call Recorder | It works on all versions of Android, supports root rights for improved recording. | A complex interface, a premium version fee. | Google Play |
Before installing, check the permissions of the application. To work correctly, you will need access to:
- ๐ Microphone (for recording voice).
- ๐ Storage (to save files).
- ๐ Contacts (to identify callers).
- ๐ถ Phone (to identify incoming/outgoing calls).
โ ๏ธ Note: Some apps (e.g. Boldbeast) require root rights to write on newer versions of Android (10)+). If you are not ready to unlock the bootloader and get root, choose solutions without this requirement (for example, Cube). ACR).
Once installed, set up automatic recording or select manual mode. Most applications allow:
- ๐ Select the format of the recording (.mp3,.wav,.amr).
- ๐๏ธ Set a storage limit (e.g., delete records over 30 days).
- โ๏ธ Automatically upload files to the cloud (Google Drive, Dropbox).
Where records are stored and how to export them
Depending on the recording method, files are stored in different places:
- ๐ฑ Built-in recording MIUI: folder /storage/emulated/0/CallRecord/ (Available through any file manager, such as Mi File Manager).
- ๐ฒ Third-party applications: usually create their own folder (for example, /CallRecorder/Cube/ or /Boldbeast/).
To export the records:
- Open the file manager and find the folder with records.
- Select the files you want (holding your finger on one of them).
- Click Share or Copy and select a target (such as Google Drive, Telegram or Email).
On Xiaomi Mi 10 with MIUI 12+, the default recordings are saved in.amr format (compressed audio file). For better quality in third-party applications, choose.mp3 format with a bit rate of at least 128 kbit / s.
If you want to edit a record (like cropping the beginning or end), use apps like Lexis Audio Editor or WaveEditor.
- โ๏ธ Cutting off unnecessary fragments.
- ๐ Turn up the volume of quiet areas.
- ๐ง Remove noise (for example, background hum).
Solving recording problems
If the recording is not working or is interrupted, check the following points:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The recording doesn't start. | There are no permissions for the application | Go to Settings โ Applications โ Permissions and check access to microphone / storage |
| Only one voice is heard. | Android 10+ Limits for Recording from a Line | Use a VoIP-enabled app (like Cube ACR) or get root rights |
| Files are not saved. | We're out of disk space. | Clean up your memory or set up automatic upload to the cloud |
| App flies out | The conflict with MIUI Optimizer | Disable battery optimization for the application in Settings โ Battery |
If the problem persists, try:
- Reinstall the recording app.
- Clear its cache (Settings โ Apps โ [Title] โ Clear the cache).
- Update MIUI to the latest version.
What to do if the recording is interrupted during the call?
On the Xiaomi Mi 10 with Android 10/11, there is sometimes a problem when the recording is cut off after 30 seconds. This is due to Google's restrictions on background activity.
- Open Settings โ Special features โ Special features services.
- Find your recording app and enable access for it.
Legal and ethical aspects
Even if it is technically possible to record conversations on Xiaomi Mi 10, it is important to remember the legal consequences. In Russia, according to Art. 138 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Violation of the secrecy of correspondence") and Art. 152.2 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation ("Privacy Protection"), recording a conversation without the consent of the interlocutor can be regarded as a violation if:
- ๐ข You share the record publicly (for example, post it on social networks).
- ๐ผ Use it for commercial purposes without permission.
- ๐ต๏ธโโ๏ธ Recording conversations for blackmail or pressure.
Exceptions:
- โ๏ธ Personal safety: if you report threats or criminal activity.
- ๐ Evidence in court: if the record is the only proof of your right (for example, in disputes with banks or insurance companies).
Other countries may have different rules, such as the EU (including Germany and France) where recording without the consent of the interlocutor is strictly prohibited, while the US laws vary by state (somewhere consent is sufficient for one party, some for both).
๐ก
If you're recording for legal purposes, at the beginning of the conversation, say, "I'm recording our conversation to record information. Do you mind?" - this will protect you from accusations of privacy violations.
Ethical standards are also worth considering, and even if the law does not prohibit recording, notifying the person is a sign of respect, which is especially important in private conversations, where trust is more valuable than formal evidence.
