Have you accidentally deleted an important phone call record on Xiaomi or can't find where it's stored? Or are you just planning to turn on call recording but don't know how it works? In this article, we'll take a look at all the possible storage locations on Redmi, POCO and Mi smartphones, from standard folders to hidden system directories.
We will warn you right away: the location of files depends on the version of MIUI, phone model and recording method (built-in feature, third-party app or cloud storage). We have collected current data for MIUI 14/15 and Android 13/14, but if you have another firmware, check the alternative methods at the end of the article.
You'll also learn how to enable automatic recording of all calls, where to look for deleted files, and why records may disappear after a system update, starting with the most obvious, standard folders.
1. Standard place of storage of records in MIUI
If you used the built-in recording function (without third-party applications), the files should be in the Rec or CallRecord folder on the internal drive.
- 📁 /storage/emulated/0/Rec/ — mainfolder MIUI 12–15
- 📁 /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/sound_recorder/call_rec/ — Alternative path for older versions
- 📁 /storage/emulated/0/CallRecord/ — occurs in some models POCO
Files are usually.amr or.mp3 and are named by pattern: Record_YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS.amr. To find the folder quickly:
- Open the File Manager application**.
- Go to the tab "Category» → «Audio».
If you don't have a Rec folder, check your recording settings (in the next section), and note that some firmware may have files hidden, so you can display them:
Settings → Additional → Show hidden files💡
If you were recording through Google Drive or another cloud, the files will not be in local memory. Check the Cloud Storage section below.
2.How to enable recording of conversations on Xiaomi
By default, call recording is disabled in most regions due to legal restrictions.
- Open the phone application** (Dialer).
- Press three points (⋮) top-right → «Settings»**.
- Select "Translation of conversations"**.
- Activate the “Write Automatically” switch or select “Write Manually”.
On some models (for example, Redmi Note 12 or Xiaomi 13) the path may be different:
Settings → Applications → Phone → Resolutions → Sound recording (enable)If the entry option is not on the menu, your firmware does not support it, in which case use third-party applications (section 4).

3. Where to look for records if the Rec folder is empty
If there are no files in the standard folder, check these alternative locations:
| Storage area | Way | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MIUI folder | /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/sound_recorder/ | Older versions of MIUI (up to 12) |
| Downloads folder | /storage/emulated/0/Download/CallRecord/ | If the record is saved through the browser |
| The cache of the Phone app | /data/data/com.android.dialer/cache/ | Root rights required |
| Google Drive | drive.google.com → “Backups” | If synchronization is enabled |
Also, records can be automatically deleted after 30 days (setting to Settings → Storage → Autoclean).
Settings → Applications → Phone → Storage → Clear cache (NOT data!)Why do records disappear after MIUI update?
4. Third-party applications for recording calls
If the built-in feature doesn’t work or doesn’t suit the quality, use these proven apps:
- 🎤 Cube ACR — Records both ends of a conversation (requires setting up the sound source).
- 📱 Call Recorder by Lovekesh – a simple interface MP3.
- ☁️ Automatic Call Recorder – Supports cloud redundancy.
After installation:
- Open the application and provide all the permissions requested.
- In the settings, select Sound Source → Loud Communication** (for recording both interlocutors).
- Specify a folder to save (e.g. /CallRecords/).
⚠️ Attention: On Android 10+ Applications are not allowed to record the sound of other applications without root rights, so it may be necessary to record the sound of a full-fledged application:
- Activate the “Developers” mode** and enable USB debugging.

5 How to Recover Deleted Records of Conversations
If files have been deleted, try these recovery methods:
- Check the Recycle Bin: In the Files app**, go to the Recycle Bin (files are stored there for 15-30 days).
⚠️ Warning: Do not write new files to your phone after deleting, which reduces the chances of recovery, and do not use programs like Clean Master, which can permanently delete temporary files.
If the records were synced with Mi Account, try to restore them via the web version:
1. Go to https://account.xiaomi.com/
2. log in to your account.
3. Select “Cloud” → “Recent Files”.
4. Find the records by date.6 Why conversations aren't recorded: frequent problems
If the recording function is not working, check these points:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Record button is inactive | There is no permission to record sound | Settings → Applications → Phone → Permissions → Microphone (include) |
| Only your voice is recorded. | Limitations of Android 10+ | Use third-party apps with root or enable speakerphone |
| Files are saved but not reproduced | Damaged codec. | Install VLC player or convert to MP3 |
| Recording ends in 1-2 minutes | Time limit in settings | Phone settings → Record → Max. duration (set "Without limitation") |

- Turn it off. VoLTE/VoWiFi customized SIM-map.
💡
If the recording does not work after the MIUI update, reset the settings of the Phone application (without deleting data) or reinstall it via Google Play.
7. Security and legality of recording conversations
Before you record calls, consider the legal nuances:
- 📜 In Russia, recording a conversation without the consent of the interlocutor is allowed if you are a participant in the conversation (Article 23 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation).
- 🌍 In the EU and the US, notification of the second participant is required (in some US states, consent of both parties is required).
- 🔒 Records may not be used for blackmail, distribution without consent or for commercial purposes.
To avoid problems:
- Always notify the person about the recording (for example: “The conversation is recorded to record the information”).
- Store your files in encrypted form (use Mi Cloud with two-factor authentication).
- Remove the records after the expiration of their period of need.
⚠️ Note: In some countries (e.g. Germany or France), illegal recording of conversations can result in fines of up to 300,000. €. Before using the function, clarify local legislation.
