The modern smartphone has long since ceased to be just a means of communication, becoming a digital wallet that we carry with us everywhere. Owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices often face the need to quickly configure the NFC module for easy payment of purchases in one touch, the process of activating this feature can vary depending on the version of the MIUI or HyperOS operating system, and the region for which the device is released.
In this article, we will take a look at all the nuances of connecting contactless payments, from checking hardware support to fine-tuning system applications, how to properly install the necessary security certificates and why in some cases standard methods may not work without additional tweaking.
Near Field Communication’s non-contact technology enables secure data exchange over short distances, making transactions fast and secure, but it requires not only a chip to work properly, but also the right software configuration, which we’ll be looking at in a moment.
Check if the NFC module is on your device
Before you start setting up payment services, make sure your device is physically equipped with a short-range contactless module. Not all smartphones of the brand, especially the budget models of the Redmi Note or POCO M series, have an integrated chip, so visually checking specifications or searching in settings is a must-have first step.
The fastest way to check for a feature is to search for the system settings. Type the word "NFC" into the search bar in the Settings menu, and if a module is present, the system will prompt you to go to the appropriate switch. The lack of search results often indicates that the hardware in the model is not provided by the manufacturer.
You can also use third-party utilities from the Google Play store that scan hardware components of the gadget and give a detailed report on the available sensors, especially for devices purchased in global markets, where the specifications may differ from the Chinese versions.
- 📱 Open Settings and find the Connection and Sharing section or Additional Features.
- 🔍 Enter the request"NFC" in the search for settings for instant access to the switch.
- 📡 Note the top notification curtain: there is often a fast toggle to activate the module.
- 📦 Check the box or official model specification on the manufacturer’s website to confirm the presence of the chip.
⚠️ Note: If the settings menu is completely missing the item associated with NFC, most likely, in your modification of the smartphone, this module is not hardware installed, and it will not work to activate it softwarely.
NFC Activation and Basic System Configuration
Once the module is confirmed, the next step is to activate it properly and set up work priorities. In the MIUI and HyperOS operating shells, wireless interface management is placed in a separate unit, where it is important not only to turn on the switch, but also to choose the right application for emulating the map.
To start, go to Settings → Connection and Sharing (or Additional Features in older versions). Find NFC and move the switch to active position. Immediately after turning on, the system can suggest selecting the default payment application - this is a critical point for correct operation of transactions.
In the Secure element (or Security element location) you need to select the option HCE Wallet – This is the setting that allows you to use virtual cards through cloud services, rather than relying on physical cards. SIM-Operator card, which gives greater flexibility in the choice of payment instruments.
Make sure the screen is unlocked when the smartphone is brought to the terminal, as most banking applications require proof of identity to conduct a transaction. If the screen is locked, the terminal may simply not count the signal and payment will not pass.
☑️ Module setup NFC
- 🔓 Select the unlock method: payment will only pass if the device is unlocked (by the user). PIN-code, print or face).
- 💳 Install Google Pay app or analog as default payment method in settings NFC.
- 🌐 Make sure that the date and time settings are automatically determined, as security certificates are sensitive to desynchronization.
Installation and configuration of Google Pay and alternatives
The main tool for contactless payment on Android devices is traditionally Google Pay (formerly Android Pay).It requires the presence of Google Play services, which is the standard for global firmware versions, but may require additional verification on Chinese versions of smartphones.
Download the official Google Pay app from the Play Market and log in to your account. Add a bank card following the instructions on the screen: you can enter data manually or scan the card with a camera. The bank will send a verification code via SMS or offer to confirm the card release through the issuing bank application.
Due to the change in payment system rules in some regions, users may face restrictions when adding cards to local banks, in which case alternative wallet applications such as Mir Pay (for MIR cards) or banking applications with a tokenization function, which take on the role of a card emulator, come to the rescue.
Mir Pay works on a similar principle: once installed, you need to activate NFC, add a card and choose this wallet as your primary wallet when paying, and it is important to update payment systems’ applications regularly, as banks often change security protocols.
| Annex | Supported cards | Requirements | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Pay | Visa, Mastercard, MIR* | Google services | It works (depends on the bank) |
| Mir Pay | The world | NFC, Android 9+ | It's stable. |
| Sberbank Online | SberPay (Peace) | NFC, Sber's account | Works through QR/NFC |
| Samsung Pay (circumvention) | Visa, MC | Root rights, patches. | Complex installation |
⚠️ Note: When using alternative app stores (such as RuStore) to download payment systems, be sure to check the developer’s digital signature to avoid installing modified malware.
What if Google Pay doesn’t see the card?
Setup Mi Pay and Xiaomi ecosystem
Xiaomi’s own payment service, known as Mi Pay, offers an alternative payment method integrated directly into the MIUI shell, which is especially popular in certain regions and allows you to link cards directly through the Mi Wallet system application, bypassing some of the limitations of third-party services.
To activate Mi Pay, you need to go to the Mi Wallet application, which is preinstalled on most devices. If the application is removed or missing, it can be found in the Tools folder or download the current version from the official GetApps directory site. In some global firmware, the functionality may be limited or completely absent.
The process of adding a card to Mi Pay is similar to other systems: scanning the card, confirmation via SMS. The feature is that Mi Pay sometimes requires changing the region of the device in the Region settings to the supported one (for example, Russia, India or European countries), since the service is not available in all countries.
Mi Pay allows you to quickly switch between transport cards and banking products within the same interface, but it is worth considering that when you change region, some system applications can change their behavior or set of functions.
- 🌍 Change the region in the settings additionally → Region per country where Mi Pay is supported.
- 💳 Open the Mi Wallet app and click the Add New Card button.
- 🔐 Pass the verification process through the code SMS or a call from the bank.
- 🔄 Update the Mi Wallet app with the built-in updater to the latest version.
💡
If the Mi Wallet app doesn’t open or crashes immediately after launch, try clearing its cache and data via the Apps menu» → «All applications» → «Mi Wallet» → «Memory» → «Clean up».
Solving Contactless Payment Problems
Even when set up correctly, users can experience situations where the terminal is not reading the smartphone or the app is giving an error, and one of the most common reasons is the presence of a metal case or a pass card placed on the back cover that shields the antenna signal.
Problems can also arise from outdated software or system process failures Android Beam (older versions) or NFC Service, in which case a complete reset of network settings or a forced NFC service stop and then reactivate helps.
If the terminal says "Communication error" or "Maps not found", try to hold the device with another part of the case. NFC antenna in Xiaomi smartphones is most often located at the top, next to the camera, but in some models it is shifted to the center or to the upper corner.
In rare cases, third-party applications requesting access to NFC to read tags can cause conflict. Check the list of applications with permissions to access the communication module and disable the unnecessary ones.
⚠️ Warning: Do not try to disassemble the smartphone to "strengthen" the antenna or re-adjust contacts NFC. This will result in loss of warranty and possible damage to the plume, as the antenna is soldered into the board or tightly glued to the back cover.
💡
90% of payment problems are solved by removing the case, rebooting the smartphone or re-associating the card in the application.
Transaction security and tokenization
Many users fear theft of money from their phones, but contactless payment technology is built on the principles of tokenization, which makes it safer to use a physical plastic card.
Instead of a real number, a unique digital token is generated for each transaction or series of transactions, and even if an attacker intercepts the signal, they will only receive a one-time code that is useless for reusing or restoring card data.
In addition, to make a payment above a certain limit (usually 1000 rubles, but depends on the bank and country), the smartphone will require biometric confirmation or input. PIN-This adds another layer of protection against unauthorized debiting in the event of loss of an unlocked device.
Check the list of active devices in your bank’s app regularly. If you sell your phone or lose control of your account, delete the linked card through the bank’s web interface, which instantly deactivates the token on the device.
- 🛡️ Tokenization replaces real card data with a unique code at each payment.
- 👆 Limits on no-payment PIN-The code is set by the bank and may differ from the limits for plastic cards.
- 📱 When the screen is blocked, payment through NFC It becomes impossible to protect your money.
