Modern Xiaomi and Redmi smartphones have huge amounts of internal memory, but the system partition allocated for messages is not rubber. Over time, accumulated correspondence, especially if you actively receive confirmation codes from banks or delivery services, can take up a significant amount of space.
In this article, we'll look at all the ways you can clean up your message history, from the simple deletion of a single dialog to the complete cleaning of your database through an engineering menu, how to irrevocably erase sensitive data, and whether you can recover accidentally deleted messages. Deleting SMS is not just a cleanup, but also an important step in your digital hygiene.
The MIUI operating system and the new HyperOS have their own features for working with system applications. Google’s standard Messages app or Xiaomi’s own development can behave differently depending on the firmware version. We will look at universal methods that will suit most current models, including the Redmi Note, the K series and the flagship Mi.
Deletion of individual dialogues and messages in the standard annex
The most common scenario is to remove a specific conversation or an intrusive mailing from the store. In the standard Google Messages app, which is often pre-installed on global firmware versions, the process is intuitive: you need to open a list of all the chats, find the right contact, and make a long finger tap on the dialog line.
Once the dialog is highlighted (usually painted in a different color or a tick appears), a toolbar will appear at the top of the screen. Here you are interested in the basket icon. By clicking on it, you initiate the deletion process. The system can request confirmation of action to prevent accidental loss of data.
- 📱 Open the “Messages” app on your desktop.
- 👆 Press and hold your finger on the dialog that you want to remove.
- 🗑️ Touch the basket icons in the top menu.
- ✅ Confirm the action in the pop-up window.
If you don't want to delete the entire dialog, but only the specific message inside it, the algorithm changes a little. Open the chat, find the right line of text, and also press it. In the context menu that appears, select the option "Delete." Note that in some versions of MIUI, when you delete one message from the chain, it disappears only from you, but not from the interlocutor, because this is a local operation.
⚠️ Note: Messages deleted in this way do not enter the shopping cart and cannot be recovered using standard Android tools. Be extremely careful when erasing confirmation codes or important business correspondence.
For users who are used to Xiaomi’s own interface (Mi Messaging), the actions are similar, but the visual design of the menu may differ. It also works with the long tap method to highlight one or more dialogues at once. You can choose five, ten or all the available chats at once and clean them in one fell swoop, which saves time when you first set up your smartphone.
Mass cleaning and management of multiple dialogues
When the list of incoming messages has hundreds of unread messages, it becomes inefficient to delete them one by one, and in such cases it is better to use the mass control function, which allows you to allocate many dialogues at once to delete simultaneously, this is especially true after buying a new Xiaomi Redmi, when you need to quickly clean test SMS or old data transferred from an old phone.
To activate the multiple choice mode, just press and hold any dialog in the shared list, and then in the menu that appears (usually in the upper right corner or in the lower panel) select "Select all" or manually tick against the desired groups.
There is also a hidden quick-cleaning feature through the app’s settings: Go to the Message Settings menu (three dots in the corner), find the Storage or Memory Management section, where the system will analyze the amount of space it occupies and suggest removing old dialogs or attachments that weigh the most.
It's important to understand the difference between deleting the dialog and cleaning the app cache. Deleting the dialog erases the text of the correspondence. Clearing the cache (via Android settings) can reset the display settings or temporary files, but it doesn't always affect the text database itself unless you select "Clean all the data." Clearing the application's data will return it to factory status by deleting the entire correspondence history without the possibility of recovery.

Working with Spam and Archive folders
Modern spam protection algorithms in Xiaomi smartphones are quite aggressive, automatically filtering suspicious numbers. However, advertising mailings often fall into the folder “Spam” or “Blocked”, continuing to occupy space in the memory of the device.
To access this data, open the messaging app, click on the profile avatar or three dots in the corner, and select Spam and Locked. Inside, you'll see a list of all the filtered messages, and you can use the same mass-selection and deletion methods as in the main inbox.
Special attention should be paid to the Archive folder, which is that many users archive dialogs so they don't horn their eyes, but they don't want to delete them forever. Archive messages are stored separately and don't come as notifications, but they still take up space. To get to them, scroll down the chat list or find the corresponding folder on the menu.
- 📂 Go to the app menu (three dots or avatar).
- 🚫 Select the option “Spam and blocked».
- 🧹 Click on “Clear All” or highlight specific messages.
- 📦 Check the Archive folder for old unnecessary dialogs.
There is a useful setting that allows you to automatically delete old messages after a certain time. In the application settings, find the item “Delete old messages” and activate it. You can set a limit, for example, store messages only in the last 30 days, this completely automates the process and eliminates the need for manual cleaning in the future.
⚠️ Note: Automatic deletion can erase important codes from banks if you store them in SMS. It is recommended that important codes be immediately transferred to notes or screenshots.
Use of third-party applications for SMS management
Standard tools are not always convenient if you need complex sorting or selective removal by keyword. There are many management apps in the Google Play store that provide advanced functionality. One of the most popular and reliable is the SMS Organizer app (from Microsoft) or specialized utilities like Clean Master (with caution) or Files by Google.
These programs often have a Smart Delete feature that analyzes the content of messages and suggests removing categories like Ads, OTP, Transactions, which allows you to free up megabytes of space in a couple of clicks, removing thousands of small messages from delivery services and stores.
Security of Third Party Applications
When you install this software, Android will give you a warning that the app is accessing your messages, which is a standard procedure without which the program will not function, and you will need to go to the permission settings and manually enable access for the selected manager.
Once you've set up, you can use filters, like typing the word "code" or "bank" into a search, highlighting all the results you find and removing them, which is much faster than manually flipping through, and many of these applications can back up XML or PDF before being deleted, which is a great insurance policy.
Deep cleaning through the “Storage” menu and Android settings
If the messaging app interface doesn't open or doesn't work properly, you can use Android's system settings, which allows you to delete all the app data, which is equivalent to completely resetting your SMS history, and it's a radical but effective method if you want to ensure that everything is deleted.
To do this, go to Settings → Apps → All Apps. Find in the Messages (or Messaging) list. Click on it to open the app information page. Here you are interested in the Storage section.
Inside, you'll see two buttons: Clear cache and Clear all data (or Reset), and we're interested in the second option.
Settings → Applications → Messages → Storage → Clean all dataOnce you click on Clear All Data, the system will alert you that all files, settings, and databases of the application will be deleted. Confirm. The next time you run the application, it will be as new, without a single message saved. This method is often used before selling the phone or transferring it to another person.
| Deleting method | Difficulty | Is recovery possible? | What's removed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single removal | Low. | No (no backup) | Selected dialogues |
| Mass excretion | Low. | No. | Dialogue group |
| Cleaning the application data | Medium | No. | All the history and settings |
| Third-party software | Medium | Depends on the program. | Selectively by category |
💡
Before selling your phone, be sure to reset to the factory settings (Hard Reset) through the Recovery menu to delete SMS and other data without the possibility of recovery by conventional methods.
Recovery of Remote SMS on Xiaomi
Often, users wonder not only how to delete, but how to return accidentally erased. Android, unlike computers, does not have a simple SMS basket (although in some MIUI shells it appeared recently in the Remote Dialogues folder, stored there for 30 days). If you delete a message past the basket, standard system means it will not return.
The only reliable way is to have a backup. Xiaomi smartphones have built-in sync with your Mi Cloud or Google Drive account, and if you have SMS sync enabled, you can restore them when you log in to a new device or after resetting your settings.
You can check for backups in Google Settings → Google → Backup. It will tell you when the copy was last saved and what it includes. If there is an SMS option, you're lucky. Recovery usually requires a full phone reset and a choice of Restore from copy option when you first set up.
- ☁️ Check your Mi Cloud account for synchronized messages.
- 📅 Check the date of the last backup in Google Drive.
- 🔄 A complete reset of the device may be required for recovery.
- 💾 Specialized PC software (Dr.Fone, Tenorshare) can help, but does not guarantee 100% results.
There are PC software that scans the phone’s memory for “tails” of deleted data. However, on modern versions of Android with disk encryption, this works extremely rarely and often requires Root rights, which require Xiaomi to unlock the bootloader and wait 7 days.
⚠️ Note: Programs that promise to “guaranteed recovery” of SMS without backup are often fraudulent or contain viruses.
💡
The best SMS strategy is to manually clean and set up automatic deletion of old messages to prevent database overflows.
