Deleting contacts on Xiaomi Redmi 8 smartphones only seems to be a simple task โ in practice, users are faced with the nuances of synchronization, duplication of records and hidden MIUI settings. If you tried to erase a number through the standard Contacts app, but it continues to appear in messengers or incoming calls, the problem lies deeper. In this article, we will analyze all the current methods of deleting โ from basic to advanced, taking into account the features of firmware and associated accounts.
Redmi 8 (codenamed olive) is powered by MIUI 11/12 with a shell over Android 9/10, where contacts can be stored in three places at once: on your device, in your Google account, and in your Mi Cloud. Simply tapping โDeleteโ in your phone book often doesnโt solve the problem โ the record stays in the cloud and is restored the next time you sign in, and weโll show you how to completely erase the contact from all sources without it reappearing.
1. Delete contact through the standard โContactsโ application
The most obvious method is to use the built-in Contacts app (an icon with a person's silhouette on a green background). But even here, there are pitfalls: if a contact is synchronized with Google or Mi Account, deleting it locally will not lead to complete erasure. Here's how to do it correctly:
Open the Contacts app โ Find the desired entry through search or scroll โ You can tap it to open the card. In the upper right corner, click three dots (โฎ) And you can select Delete. The system can request confirmation, you can agree. If you do that, you can then re-enter the contact, and it's linked to a cloud account (more on that below).
- ๐ Search by name/number: Use the search bar at the top of the screen if there are many contacts.
- ๐ฑ Local Contacts: If a record is not synced, it will be deleted forever.
- โ๏ธ Cloud contacts: when you delete, the system will prompt you to choose where to wash โ from your device or from your account.
โ ๏ธ Note: If you delete a contact linked to WhatsApp or Telegram, it may remain in the database of these messengers. For complete erasure, go to the settings of each application separately.

2. Delete via Google account (for synchronized contacts)
If your Redmi 8 is linked to a Google account, all contacts are synced by default to the Google Contacts servers. Deleting them on your phone alone won't help -- the next time you update the data, they'll come back. To erase the record forever:
- Open your browser and go to the Google Contacts website.
- Sign in with the same account as on your phone.
- Find the right contact through search or manually, tick it.
- Click on the basket icon (๐๏ธ) top-panel.
- Confirm deletion. Contact will disappear from the phone after the next sync (usually within 5-10 minutes).
If you want to disable Google Contact Sync, go to Settings โ Accounts โ Google โ Account Sync and turn off the switch opposite Contact, but remember: this will delete all synced records from the device.
| Action. | The result | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Deletion via phone | Contact disappears locally | It'll come back in synchronization. |
| Delete via Google Contacts | Contact is erased forever. | Requires Internet connection |
| Shutting down synchronization | Contacts are only on the phone. | Risk of data loss in resetting |
3. Remove via Mi Cloud (for Xiaomi users)
Mi Cloud is Xiaomi's cloud storage that automatically backs up contacts if the appropriate setting is enabled.
Go to Settings โ Mi Account โ Mi Cloud. Make sure that contacts sync is enabled (the slider opposite Contact is active). Tap on this item โ a list of backups will open. Select the latter and click Management โ find the contact you want and delete it. Alternatively, use the web version of Mi Cloud (Contacts section).
- ๐ Autosynchronization: Default to activate when you first log in to Mi Account.
- ๐ฒ Local Copies: Even after you delete the contact from the cloud, it can remain in your phoneโs memory.
- ๐ Two-factor authentication: Mi Cloud may require access SMS-code.
โ ๏ธ Note: If you delete a contact from Mi Cloud but do not disable sync with Google, the record may be duplicated. Before mass deletion, check which account is the main one in the Contact settings โ Contact management โ Default account.
Mass removal of contacts (to clean the phone book)
If you need to delete multiple records at once (for example, after importing duplicates), doing so one at a time is inconvenient. MIUI has a built-in tool for group management:
Open Contacts. โ press three points (โฎ) top-right โ Select Contact Management โ Mass deletion. Check the boxes for unnecessary posts and confirm the action. Note that this method only works for local contacts. For cloud records, you will have to use the web version of Google Contacts or Mi Cloud.
๐ก
Before mass deletion, export contacts to file VCF: Contacts โ โฎ โ Imports/Exports โ Export to the vault. This will back up in case of an error.
If mass deletion is not available (for example, due to an older version of MIUI), use third-party applications like Contacts Optimizer or Simpler Merge, which allow you to find and delete duplicates, as well as clean empty records.
5. Removal of contacts with SIM-map
On Redmi 8, contacts can be stored not only in the phoneโs memory, but also on the phone. SIM-Removing them from there has its own peculiarities:
- Open the Contacts app.
- Tap it on three points (โฎ) โ Contact management.
- Select the tab SIM-card (if any).
- Find the contact you want, click on it and select Delete.
Keep in mind that SIM-If you see a message Memory is full, delete the unnecessary numbers first. SIM They are not synchronized with clouds, so they must be backed up manually via Import/Export.

6. Recovery of accidentally deleted contacts
If you delete a contact by mistake, it can be returned within a limited time.
For Google Contacts:
Go to contacts.google.com โ on the left menu, select Recycle Bin โ find the deleted entry and click Restore. Recycle Bin shelf life is 30 days.
For Mi Cloud:
Go to Settings โ Mi Account โ Mi Cloud โ Contacts โ Recycle Bin. It is also available to restore within 30 days. If more time has passed, you can only return data from a local backup (if it was created).
- โณ Recovery period: 30 days for both services.
- ๐ Auto-Recovery: Re-Sync Remote Contacts Can Return.
- ๐ฅ Backups: Export contacts to.vcf file regularly.
๐ก
If the contact was deleted more than 30 days ago, it can only be restored from a local backup or through specialized programs (for example, Dr.Fone).
7 Why contact is not removed: common problems
Sometimes users find that the contact "does not want to" be removed, and here are the main reasons and solutions:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Contact is returned after removal | Synchronization with Google or Mi Cloud | Remove the entry from the cloud (see sections 2 and 3) |
| The "Delete" button is inactive | Contact is secure (e.g. system contact) | Check the access rights to the โContactโ application |
| Error in removal | The app cache is damaged. | Clear the cache in Settings โ Applications โ Contacts โ Storage |
If none of these methods worked, try resetting the Contacts app to factory settings: Settings โ Apps โ Contacts โ Storage โ Reset. This wonโt delete the contacts themselves, but will return the standard display and management settings.
