Many users mistakenly think that to activate the cloud, it is enough to just log into your Mi Account, but in practice you need to properly configure synchronization, manage storage quotas and understand the nuances of data recovery. In this article, we will analyze all the stages of creating and optimizing Xiaomi Cloud – from account registration to fine-tuning automatic backup.
Xiaomi Cloud is very closely integrated with MIUI firmware, but it also works on HyperOS devices, which means that even if you upgrade to the latest version of the software, all the features of the cloud will remain available — as long as you set them up correctly. We will also reveal the hidden limits of the free rate (5 GB) and show you how to get around them without buying a premium subscription.
What is Xiaomi Cloud and Why You Need It?
Xiaomi Cloud is a cloud service from Xiaomi that performs three key functions:
- 📱 Synchronization of data between devices (contacts, SMS, notebook).
- 💾 Backup of system, applications and multimedia.
- 🔄 Data recovery when changing your smartphone or after resetting settings.
Unlike Google Drive or iCloud, Xiaomi Cloud is optimized for the Xiaomi ecosystem, for example, it automatically saves MIUI/HyperOS settings, design themes and even data from proprietary applications like Mi Fit or Mi Home. This makes it indispensable for users who actively use Xiaomi smart devices (bracelets, lamps, robot vacuum cleaners).
But there are pitfalls:

- ⚠️ Some data (such as Wi-Fi passwords) are only synced when the corresponding option is manually enabled.
- ⚠️ Recovery from the backup can take several hours if the data volume exceeds 10 GB.
Step 1: Registration of your Mi Account
Without a Mi Account, you can't access Xiaomi Cloud. If you don't already have one, sign up directly on your smartphone:
- Open the Settings. → Mi Account (or Mi Account).
- Click Create an account and enter a valid email or phone number.
- Create a strong password (at least 8 characters, with numbers and letters).
- Confirm registration via SMS or mail.
Important: Link your phone number to your account, which will make it easier to restore access if you forget your password, and we also recommend that you enable two-factor authentication in your account security settings.

Step 2: Sign in to Xiaomi Cloud and initial setup
After registering, Mi Account automatically connects to Xiaomi Cloud, but the data sync is disabled by default.
- Go to Settings → Mi → Xiaomi Cloud account.

Step 3: Backing up data to the cloud
Backup in Xiaomi Cloud saves not only user files, but also system settings, installed applications and even data of some games.
- Open Settings → Mi Account → Xiaomi Cloud → Backup.
- Click Create a backup and select the data to save.
- Wait until the process is completed (it can take anywhere from 10 minutes to several hours).
Tip: If you have slow internet, use Wi-Fi and connect your smartphone to charge. Interrupting the copying process can damage the backup.

Step 4: Recover data from Xiaomi Cloud
If you have changed your smartphone or reset your settings, you can restore data from the cloud in two ways:
- When first enabled: At the device setup stage, select Restore from backup and log in to Mi Account.
- Through Settings: Go to Settings → Mi Account → Xiaomi Cloud → Data Recovery.
Attention: Recovery will replace the current data on the device, for example, if you restore contacts, they will overwrite existing contacts in the phone book, and to avoid losses, pre-export important data manually.

Recovery from Xiaomi Cloud only works on devices with the same MIUI/HyperOS version as the backup. If the firmware is different, some settings may not apply.
Step 5: Storage management and rates
Xiaomi Cloud's free plan provides 5GB of space, enough for system backups and some photos, but if you're actively using the cloud, there's no space.
