Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphone owners often face the need to check their correspondence history, which may be required to confirm payment for services, search for important information, or simply to restore the context of the conversation. The standard MIUI shell and its current version of HyperOS offer several ways to manage messages, but not all of them are obvious to the average user. Search for a specific sent SMS can take minutes if you do not know where to look for archives.
To make matters worse, different phone models have different messaging apps, some of which are standard Google Messages, some of which are proprietary Mi Messages or third-party solutions from operators, and they have different archive and garbage algorithms, and in this article we will look at all the possible search scenarios for sent messages, including the basket and cloud backups.
It is important to understand that the search process depends on the version of the operating system and the region for which the smartphone is released. European versions of firmware often use a pure Android interface, whereas global or Chinese versions may have unique Mi Cloud features. We will look at universal methods that will help you find the right information regardless of the device model.
Search for messages in the standard Messages appendix
The easiest and most obvious way to find a text message sent is to open a dialog with a specific contact. In most cases, the history of the correspondence is saved automatically and does not require additional actions to activate. However, if there are hundreds of messages, manual search becomes ineffective.
Modern versions of the MIUI and HyperOS have a convenient search for the content of messages, and to use it, you need to open the message app and find the magnifier icon or search bar at the top of the screen, and by entering a keyword, code or sender name, the system will instantly filter the correspondence.
The difference between the messages you send and the messages you receive in the interface is worth noting: the messages you send are usually blue or green and pressed to the right edge of the screen. The messages you receive are gray and on the left, and this visual encoding helps you navigate the conversation quickly.
- 📱 Open the “Messages” app on your desktop.
- 🔍 Click on the search icon or enter text in the line “Search in messages».
- 💬 Select the desired dialog from the results list to view the context.
- 📅 Scroll up to find older messages sent.
💡
Use voice input in the search bar if you want to find a message from a long phrase or quote that is inconvenient to type manually.
If you use Google Messages, which is common on global smartphone versions, the search functionality is even more advanced, allowing you to search for posts not only by text, but also by type of attached files, such as images or links, which is especially useful when you need to find a sent photo or document.
Using a shopping cart to restore deleted SMS
A common reason to search for sent messages is to delete them accidentally, so the user could clear the dialogue thinking that the information was no longer needed, but after a while it was needed. Fortunately, the Xiaomi ecosystem provides protection against such errors in the form of a Recycle Bin. Deleted messages are not permanently erased immediately, but moved to temporary storage.
Remote SMS in the shopping cart is usually 30 days old, and after that period, the system automatically cleans the storage, and recovery becomes impossible without special tools, so if you find an important message missing, you need to act quickly.
⚠️ Attention: Recycle Bin feature may be missing in some versions of the Messages app or be disabled by default.Check the app settings to make sure that deletion with confirmation and relocation to the Recycle Bin are activated.
To access remote messages, you need to go to the settings of the message application itself. The interface may vary slightly depending on the Android version, but the logic remains the same. In the settings menu, look for the section related to archiving or remote elements.
☑️ Checking the basket
The message is restored instantly, returning to the original dialogue in chronological order, taking its place according to the date and time of the dispatch, which allows you to maintain the integrity of the correspondence without creating duplicates or gaps in the history.
Use the Mi Message (Mi Messaging) app
Many Xiaomi devices, especially the Chinese versions and some global builds, preinstalled its own Message Mi app. It differs from the standard Google solution with advanced functionality including spam blocking, smart sorting and integration with the Mi Cloud cloud.
In Mi Messaging, messages sent can be hidden in special folders if they have been identified by the system as transactional or advertising. For example, confirmation codes from banks or notifications from delivery services often fall into a separate tab to avoid cluttering the main list of dialogs.
To view all categories of messages in the Mi app, you need to go to the Service Messages tab or similar, which stores the history of interactions with short numbers and automatic services, which is critical if you are looking for a service connection request or activation code sent.
| Function | Standard annex | Messages from Mi | Google Messages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search by text | There is. | There is. | There is. |
| Basket | Depends on the version. | Aye (30 days) | Aye (30 days) |
| Blocking spam | Basic | Expanded | Intellectual |
| Synchronization | Google Drive | Mi Cloud | Google One |
Mi Messaging features the ability to create hidden folders. If you have previously activated the Hidden Messages feature, some of the correspondence can only be accessed after you enter a special password or a pattern lock. Check this section if standard search does not yield results.
How to Enable Hidden Folder in Mi Messaging
Checking cloud synchronization Mi Cloud
One of the most reliable ways to find lost or deleted SMS is to check the Mi Cloud cloud storage. If your device has been synchronized, copies of all messages are regularly stored on Xiaomi servers, which allows you to recover data even after a complete reset of the phone.
To check, go to your Mi Account settings. In the "Mi Cloud" section, select "Sync" and make sure the switch opposite to "Messages" is active during the period of interest. If sync is working, the data is available for recovery.
It is important to distinguish between real-time synchronization and backup. Synchronization displays the current state, whereas it may be the recovery process from the backup that is required to restore the deleted one. When you restore from Mi Cloud, old messages will be added to the current ones without replacing new correspondence.
- ☁️ Go to "Settings» → «Mi Account» → «Mi Cloud».
- 🔄 Check the synchronization status for the item "Messages».
- 💾 If necessary, click “Restore” (requires reboot or reset).
- 📲 Make sure you have stable Wi-Fi to download data.
💡
Regularly checking the synchronization status in Mi Cloud ensures that your correspondence will not be irretrievably lost in the loss or breakdown of your smartphone.
There is also the option to view cloud content via the i.mi.com web interface. However, it is worth noting that the web version often only allows you to manage contacts and notes, and access to the SMS archive can only be limited to the recovery process on the device.
Analysis of Google Drive backups
An alternative to Xiaomi’s ecosystem is the standard Android backup mechanism through Google Drive. Virtually all modern Redmi and POCO smartphones offer default copies of data to a Google account, which includes a list of apps, settings and, importantly, SMS history.
You can't view the backup contents directly through the file manager or Google Drive site. The files are encrypted and are designed solely for automatic recovery when you set up your phone or after you reset them, so you'll have to perform a recovery procedure to "view" messages in this way.
The process of recovering from Google Drive requires a complete reset before factory settings. This is a radical method that should only be resorted to as a last resort when the information is really critical and other methods have not helped. Before you start, make sure that you have a fresh copy.
⚠️ Warning: Restore from Google backup can overwrite current data on your phone. be sure to make a local copy of important files to your computer before starting the reset procedure.
When you set up your phone after you reset, the system will ask if you want to recover data from the cloud. Select the desired recovery point by date. Once the process is complete, all sent and received messages that existed at the time the copy was created will appear in the application.
Third-party applications for SMS analysis
If you can't find a message with built-in tools, you can use specialized tools from the Google Play Store, there are many SMS management applications that offer advanced search, export and analysis features, and they can read the message database directly.
Popular applications like SMS Backup & Restore or Message Restore allow you to not only create copies, but also view the contents of existing archives. You can open a previously saved backup file (usually the.xml format) and find the desired text in it through a file search.
Using third-party software requires permissions to access personal data. Be careful to choose only trusted applications with high ratings and a large number of reviews. Avoid programs that require suspicious rights that are not related to messaging.
Some file managers, like MT Manager or advanced versions of MIUI File Manager, allow you to open the mmsms.db database if you have Root rights, a layer for advanced users that allows you to extract absolutely any information stored in the phone's memory.
