Users of Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco smartphones often face the need to recover accidentally deleted files or applications. However, the standard MIUI or HyperOS shell does not have a single system “Basket” for all activities, as is implemented in desktop operating systems. Understanding where exactly deleted data is stored is critical to storing your information.
Depending on what you delete — a photo, document, app or browser download history — the path to recovery will be radically different. Some services store the deleted for up to 30 days, others only until the device is rebooted. It is important to immediately determine the type of deleted content so that you do not waste time searching in the wrong settings section.
In this article, we will take a closer look at all possible places where temporary storage can be on your smartphone, and you will learn how to manage memory and avoid irretrievable loss of important data through competent navigation.
Recycle Bin in Gallery and Cloud Services
Most often users are looking for a way to return deleted photos or videos. The standard Gallery app on Xiaomi devices implements a temporary storage mechanism that allows you to cancel the deletion for a certain period of time, usually this period is 30 days, after which the files are permanently deleted.
To get into this section, you need to open the Gallery app and go to the Albums tab. Scroll down to the very end, where you'll find Deleted, and that's where all the media you've removed from the main view is stored.
If you use the Xiaomi Cloud or Google Photos cloud service, the logic may be slightly different. In Google Photos, for example, you need to click on "Library" and then select "Basket." Synchronizing between devices can cause deleting the phone to clear the photo and tablet, so be careful.
- 📸 Open the Gallery app on the home screen.
- 📂 Go to the "Albums" tab in the lower menu.
- ⬇️ Scroll down to the "Remote" section».
- ⏳ Select a photo and click on “Restore” or “Delete Forever».
💡
If you deleted photos more than 30 days ago, standard gallery methods will not be able to restore them – you will need to connect to a backup or use specialized software to restore data.
It is worth noting that the amount of memory occupied by deleted files in the Recycle Bin is also limited. If the space in the cloud or on the device runs out, the system can begin to automatically delete the oldest files from the Recycle Bin, despite the time limit of 30 days.
Managing Application Removal in GetApps and Mi Store
The second common scenario is the removal of installed software, with two major stores in the Xiaomi ecosystem installing software: global Google Play and proprietary GetApps (formerly the Mi Store), each with its own history and deletion mechanism.
The GetApps app store doesn't have a classic shopping cart where remote programs go. Instead, there's a Manage section where you display apps that you can install or update, and if you delete an app, it just disappears from your desktop, but it stays in your account.
To return the program, you just need to find it through a search in the store and click the install button. Download history is stored tied to your Mi Account, which makes it easy to restore the software set after changing the device or resetting.
Special attention should be paid to system applications. Some embedded MIUI programs can't be removed completely without superuser rights, they can only be "disabled" in this case, they hide from the menu, but take up space in the system section, and to return them, you need to go to the settings and find the item "Restore Remote" or "Disable applications".
Temporary files in the file manager
The standard File Manager on Xiaomi smartphones also has an accidental deletion feature, but many users are unaware that this feature often requires pre-activation or only works for certain types of files.
When you delete files through the built-in manager, they can be placed in a hidden temporary storage folder. To check this, open the Explorer app and click on the menu icon (three bars or dots). In the list of options, look for Recycle Bin or Recently Deleted.
If you use third-party file managers, such as Total Commander or ES Explorer, the logic of their work does not depend on the Xiaomi system, in such cases, you need to look for settings inside the application itself. Local storage can be overcrowded if you do not clean the cache and temporary files for a long time.
| File type | Storage period | Where to find | Recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photo/Video | 30 days | Gallery → Remote | Automatic. |
| Documents | Depends on the software. | Conductor/Cloud | Handheld. |
| Annexes | Indefinitely | GetApps / Play Market | Re-installation |
| Communications | 30 days | Messages → Basket | Handheld. |
☑️ Checking the vault
It is important to understand the difference between deleting a file and cleaning the application cache. Cache is not restored, as this is temporary data to speed up the program. Files in the basket take up space on the disk, so regular cleaning of this partition is necessary to free up space.
Bin in the browser and downloads
Users often confuse the concept of a shopping cart with a browser download history. In fact, mobile browsers (such as Chrome or the built-in Mi Browser) do not have a Recycle Bin for deleted files. If you download a file and delete it from the Downloads folder, it disappears irrevocably if it was not synced with the cloud.
There's a downloads section in Mi Browser that stores a list of downloaded files, and deleting it from here is like erasing a file from your device, but if you're talking about your site history, it's stored separately, and you have to click on the menu icon and select History.
If you delete an important document from the Download folder, immediately check the cloud service to which the phone is attached. Often Google Drive or Xiaomi Cloud have time to back up before syncing the removal, and the reaction speed in this case plays a crucial role.
⚠️ Note: Unlike a computer, Android doesn’t have a single system basket for all files. Deleting a file in one application doesn’t mean it’ll end up in another application’s basket or system-wide buffer.
To prevent data loss, it is recommended to set up automatic synchronization of the download folder with cloud storage, this will create an additional layer of security, and even if you accidentally delete a local copy, the file will remain available in the cloud.
Recovery of deleted messages and notes
Textual data deserve special attention: SMS-Messages and notes. MIUI And HyperOS, in the Messages app, came the Recycle Bin. SMS and MMS stored there for 30 days.
To open this section, run the Messages app, click the three dots in the top right corner, and select Recycle Bin, where you can restore dialogs or clear them permanently, which is especially useful if you accidentally swipe an important bank confirmation code.
Similar to Notes, deleted records also end up in a folder where they can be returned, and if you use third-party messengers like Telegram or WhatsApp, they have their own shopping carts inside the chat settings.
Secret functions of notes
Remember that when you change your phone or switch from Android to iOS (or vice versa), the content of the application baskets may not be transferred if you do not make a full backup through Mi Mover or cloud services.
Cleaning and garbage management
The built-in Security app on Xiaomi has a Cleanup feature that often scares users. When you run a scan, the system finds the junk and suggests removing it. Many people say it will affect personal files, but it's not.
The system cleaner works with cache, residual files of remote applications and temporary files. Automatic cleanup does not touch your photos, contacts or documents in standard folders. However, be careful with advanced cleaning settings.
In some cases, users set up automatic cleaning of the gallery or messaging cart. Check the settings of the Security app → Cleanup → Settings to make sure there is no check mark on automatic deletion of files over a certain period.
- 🛡️ Launch the Security App».
- 🧹 Select the item “Cleaning up».
- ⚙️ Click on the gear settings in the corner.
- 📅 Check the garbage removal settings.
💡
Regularly manually checking your gallery cart and messages once a month is the best habit to keep order on your smartphone without risking losing important data suddenly.
Using third-party accelerators and cleaners from the Play Market on Xiaomi devices is often unnecessary, as the built-in MIUI tools are optimized for iron better. Aggressive cleaning by third-party programs can lead to system failures.
