Record lectures, interviews or voice notes on Xiaomi, but there are unnecessary pauses, noise or unnecessary fragments in the file? Cutting audio directly in the standard Dictaphone app (or Recording sound in MIUI) takes less than a minute β if you know where to look for the necessary functions. In this article, we will discuss all the ways to edit records, including hidden features that are not written in the official documentation.
Important: the trimming algorithm may differ depending on the MIUI version (12 to 14) and the smartphone model (Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Xiaomi 13T, etc.). We tested the instructions on the current firmware in 2026 and specified features for different devices. If your recorder looks different, check the section "What to do if there is no cropping function?" at the end of the article.
Standard cropping in the Dictator appendix (MIUI 12β14)
The easiest way is to use a built-in editor. It's available on all Xiaomi smartphones with MIUI 12 and up, including budget models like the Redmi 10A or POCO M5.
- Open the Dictophone app** (a microphone icon, usually in the Tools folder).
- Find the desired entry in the list and tap it β the player will open.
- In the lower right corner, click on the Edit icon** (scissors or pencil).
- The orange stripe will appear on the timeline, which is the pruning tool.
Now you need to highlight the fragment that you want to save:
- π΅ Left marker (beginning): Drag to the beginning of the desired segment.
- π΅ Right marker (end): drag to the end of the fragment.
- π Pre-listen to the result by pressing the play button in the center.
- βοΈ Click βSaveβ (or βSaveβ) to apply the changes.
MIUI 14 has a "Precise Trimming" feature β hold your finger on the marker for 2 seconds to turn on the mode to within a millisecond. This is useful for removing short pauses or clicks.
Check the recording time (should be >5 seconds)
Make sure the file is not password protected
Close other applications that use the microphone
Connect your headphones for accurate listening-->
2. Trimming through Google Drive (if there is no built-in editor)
Some firmware (e.g. MIUI 11 or old Redmi 7/8) doesn't have a clipping feature in the recorder, and Google Drive can edit audio files right in the browser.
- Upload the recording to Google Drive (you can use the app or drive.google.com website).
- Open the file and click on three dots (βMoreβ) β βOpen withβ β βGoogle Driveβ (web version).
β οΈ Note: Google Drive saves the clipped recording as a new file, the original remains intact, and the service compresses audio to 128 kbps, which can degrade the quality for professional recordings.
| Method | Quality. | Speed. | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in editor | βββββ (lossless) | β‘ Instantly. | MIUI 12β14 |
| Google Drive | βββ (128 kbps) | π’ 10β30 seconds | Older versions of MIUI |
| Third-party annexes | ββββ (software-dependent) | β‘β‘ Quickly. | Advanced editing |
3. Advanced cropping in third-party applications
If you need additional features β overlay music, volume normalization or noise removal β use specialized programs. We tested the top 3 options for Xiaomi:
- ποΈ Lexis Audio Editor: Supports formats.mp3,.wav,.m4a, There's an equalizer and echo removal.
- π§ WaveEditor: simple interface, saves metadata (write date, device) Free version limited to 10 minutes of audio.
- π MP3 Cutter: optimized for pruning long files (lectures, podcasts) There is an automatic detection of silence.
How to work in Lexis Audio Editor:
- Import the file through the Open β Audio menu.
- Click on the waveform to highlight the fragment (a green frame will appear).
- Use the buttons: Cut β cut the highlighted; Trim β leave only the highlighted; Fade In/Out β smooth start/end.

β οΈ Note: When cropped in third-party applications, the original file can be deleted or overwritten. Always back up the record before editing - for example, send it to yourself on Telegram or by mail.
4. How to crop a record without loss of quality
Xiaomi's built-in editor keeps the original bitrate, but if it's not done carefully, you can get clicks on the joints.
- π― Select a fragment with a margin of 0.3-0.5 seconds on each side, this will avoid pruning directly along the sound wave.
- π Use the function "Fade"** (Fade) In/Out) Lexis Audio Editor if you cut the beginning or end of the recording.
If there is a noise after pruning, try applying the filter in WaveEditor:
- Open the file and go to the Effects tab.
- Select Noise Reduction β Easy.
- Press Preview to evaluate the result.
What if the file is not reproduced after the clipping?
5. Trimming records from calls (features)
Xiaomi phone records are saved in the CallRecord folder and may have editing restrictions.
- π Call files are often protected from changes (especially in the MIUI for India or Global ROM).
- π If the Edit button is inactive, copy the file to another folder (like Downloads) and try to trim again.
- π± In some models (POCO F4, Xiaomi 12 Pro) call records are saved in.amr format - not all editors support it. MP3 Cutter or convert to.mp3 via Online-Convert.
To convert.amr to.mp3:
- Open the Online-Convert website.
- Download the file and select the bitrate of 192 kbit/s.
- Download the converted file and trim it in any way from this article.
6. Automatic Cutting of Silence (for lectures and interviews)
If there are many pauses in a recording (for example, during a lecture or interview), they can be deleted automatically.
- Install the Auto Audio Cutter app (link).
- Import the file and select Remove Silence mode.
- Customize: Silence threshold: -40 dB (the higher the value, the more aggressive the pruning) Minimum pause: 0.8 sec (pauses shorter than this value will not be removed).
Process
β οΈ Warning: Automatic pruning can remove important lines if they were spoken quietly. Always check the result and compare it to the original.
π‘
If the recording contains important information (such as work arrangements), make a text transcript before cropping. To do this, upload the file to Google Docs (File β Download β turn on speech recognition).
7. What to do if there is no pruning function?
Some Xiaomi smartphones (especially those with custom firmware or older versions of MIUI) may not have an editor in the voice recorder.
- π Update. MIUI: Go to Settings. β The phone. β Update the system and check the relevance of the firmware.
- π± Install an alternative voice recorder: for example, Hi-Q MP3 Recorder or Voice Recorder by Splend Apps β these have built-in editors.
- π» Edit on PC: connect your phone to your computer, copy the file, and use Audacity (free plugin-enabled editor).
If the problem occurs after resetting or flashing, try resetting the settings of the Dictophone app:
- Go to Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Find a Recorder (or Recorder) and select Warehouse.
- Click Clear Data and Clear Cache.
- Restart the phone and check for the cropping function.
8. Frequent mistakes and how to avoid them
When cutting audio on Xiaomi, users often face typical problems. Here's how to solve them:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| No cropped file is saved | Not enough memory space | Clear the cache or save the file to SD-map |
| App flies off when pruned | A damaged file or MIUI error | Restart your phone or use another app |
| The clipped recording sounds quieter | Conservation compression | Select WAV format instead of MP3 |
| No edit button. | An outdated version of MIUI | Update your firmware or use Google Drive |
π‘
If the file weighs more than the original after trimming, the application has converted it to an uncompressed format (e.g., WAV). To reduce the size, export the record to MP3 with a bitrate of 128-192 kbps.
