Losing a number in a crowded phone book is a familiar situation for many smartphone owners: When a contact list has hundreds or even thousands of entries, finding the right person becomes a challenge with a star, and this is especially acute for Xiaomi users, since the MIUI shell and the new HyperOS have their own data organization features that differ from standard Android.
In this article, we will take a closer look at not only basic search methods, but also how to detect hidden, blocked, and even deleted numbers, learn how to use powerful filters of the built-in application and where to look for backups if the phone book suddenly empty.
There are several scenarios that users face: a number is simply lost among others, a contact has been hidden by privacy settings or data has been lost after a reset, each with its own recovery and search tools.
Basic search through the built-in application
The most obvious but often underrated way is to use the search bar directly in the Contacts app, with many users limiting themselves to scrolling through the list without noticing the clever filtering features that speed up the process significantly.
Open the Contacts app, which is a human silhouette icon, and at the top of the screen you'll see a magnifying field, and you click on it, and you activate the search mode, and it lets you search not only by your full name, but by individual letters, your last name, or even by a part of your phone number.
Xiaomi’s search algorithm works instantly, processing the database in real time, which means you don’t have to enter the full name — the first two or three characters are enough to filter out the extra entries.

If the contact is written as "Ivan," the "Ivan" search may not work, and vice versa, depending on the version of MIUI.
And it's important to note that search works across all of these fields, and if you're looking for someone whose name you don't remember, but you know they're written as "Work" or "Delivery," you'll also get results from those words, which is especially useful when you're working with services and organizations.
Finding hidden and blocked contacts
There is a Hidden Contacts feature in MIUI that allows you to remove certain numbers from the general list to increase privacy, and it is impossible to find them in the standard way, since they visually disappear from the phone book.
To access the hidden list, you need to perform a specific action in the Contacts or Phone app. Open the app and go to dial mode. Enter the special code #12345# (or the one you set earlier in the settings). Once you enter the last digit or character, the hidden partition will open.

If, after selecting the source «SIM-The map is empty, the contacts may have been copied to the phone before, and the original SIM has been cleared.
Imports and exports for in-depth analysis
Sometimes, the built-in search fails if the database is corrupted or duplicated, and the import-export method helps, so by uploading the contacts to a file, you can analyze their contents as a text document.
Go to Settings → Contact Management → Contact Import/Export. Select Export to Internal Memory. The system will create a file with the.vcf extension. Find this file through a Explorer (usually in the MIUI/contact or root directory folder) and open it with any text editor.
