Recording phone conversations on Xiaomi smartphones is a challenge that users face for a variety of reasons, from storing important business information to capturing evidence in controversial situations. However, standard MIUI features donβt always include this feature out of the box β especially on models for the European market due to legal restrictions. In this article, we will discuss all the current ways to record conversations, including hidden system settings, third-party applications and workarounds for different versions of firmware.
It is important to understand that the legislation of many countries (including Russia) requires the consent of the interlocutor to record a conversation, and failure to comply with this rule can entail legal liability.
This material will be suitable for owners of all modern Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices based on MIUI 12-14 and HyperOS, as well as those who use custom firmware. If your model does not support embedded recording, no problem: we have prepared alternative solutions with proven applications and instructions for setting them up.
1. Built-in MIUI recording function: where to look and how to turn on
Some Xiaomi models (mainly in the Asian market) have a built-in conversation recording feature, but it's often hidden in the settings.
- Open the phone (calling) application.
- Click on the three dots in the top right corner and select Settings.
- Go to the section Record conversations (if not, read on about alternative methods).
- Activate the switch and select the save format (such as Internal Memory or Google Drive).
If there is no Record conversation, your firmware does not support it, in which case regional change (see next section) or installing third-party software will help.
Important! On models for Europe (EEA-labeled) and Russia, the recording function is often disabled at the firmware level due to local privacy laws, and you can bypass this by changing the region of the device (instruction below).
2. How to unlock hidden recording through region change
If your phone doesnβt have a recording option but the hardware supports it (e.g., Xiaomi 12/13/14, Redmi Note 11/12), you can activate the feature by temporarily changing the region of the system to India or China.
- Open the Settings. β Additionally. β Region.
- Choose India (India) or China (China).
- Reboot the phone.
- After the reboot, check for the presence of the item Record conversations in the call settings.
If the function appears, the record will be saved in the folder. MIUI/sound_recorder/calls Once activated, you can return the original region, and the recording will continue to work.
What if the function did not appear after the change of the region?
β οΈ Warning: Changing your region may temporarily disrupt settings for some services (e.g. Google Pay or banking apps) and after returning the original region, everything will be restored, but it is better to back up the data.
3. Top.-5 Applications for recording conversations on Xiaomi
If the built-in methods didn't work, third-party apps will come to the rescue, and we tested dozens of options and selected the most reliable ones.

β οΈ Note: Recording apps may conflict with Xiaomi's power saving features. After installation, add the app to battery exceptions: Settings β Battery β Choice of applications β [name] β No restrictions.
4. Recording a conversation without apps: workarounds
If you donβt want to install third-party software, there are a few alternative ways:
- π± Second phone: Put a second smartphone next to it and turn on the recorder (for example, the standard Dictaphone application in the phone). MIUI). Minus β poor recording quality due to echo.
- π§ Headphones with microphone: Connect wired headphones and use their microphone to record via voice recorder.
- π» Computer + AUX-cable: Connect your phone to your PC via AUX (3.5 mm) and record the sound with Audacity or OBS Studio.
- βοΈ Google Drive in Call Mode: During a conversation, turn on the recording via Google Drive (voice recording function in the file creation menu). Minus - only your voice is recorded.
Critical: When recording via a second phone or headphone, the person may hear extraneous noises (such as recording alerts) to avoid suspicion, turn off all sounds on the recording device.
5. set up automatic recording for all calls
If you need to record all incoming/outgoing calls automatically, set this up in the app (as in Cube ACR):
- Open Cube ACR and go to Settings β Call Record.
- Enable options: Auto Record incoming Outgoing Auto Record Contacts (if you need to record conversations with saved numbers)
In the Format section, select MP3 (saves space) or WAV (best quality).

To save space, set up automatic deletion of old records:
- Go to Settings. β Records management.
- Set a time limit (e.g., Delete records over 30 days).
π‘
If the app doesn't record a specific number, add it to the blacklist of records and then delete it from there, which will reset the contact cache and often solve the problem.
Legal aspects: when recording a conversation is legal
In Russia, the recording of telephone conversations is regulated by Article 138 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (violation of the secrecy of correspondence) and Article 152.1 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation (protection of personal data).
- βοΈ Consent: Recording is allowed if the person has agreed orally or in writing to it.
- βοΈ Without consent: Allowed only if you are a participant in the conversation and the recording is for personal purposes (not for distribution).
- βοΈ Prohibited: Distribute the recording without the consent of the interlocutor, use it for blackmail or public discrediting.
Other countries may have different rules, such as the EU (including Lithuania, Latvia) requiring the consent of all participants in the conversation, while the US (most states) requires the consent of at least one party.
β οΈ Note: If you are recording for a trial, ask your lawyer if it will be accepted as evidence.
7 Where records are stored and how to protect them
By default, records are saved:
- Built-in function MIUI: /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/sound_recorder/calls/
- Cube ACR: /storage/emulated/0/CubeBackup/ or in the cloud
- Boldbeast: /storage/emulated/0/CallRecorder/
To protect the records from outsiders:
- Move them to an encrypted folder (e.g., through Google Files or Settings β Memory β Encrypted folder in MIUI).
- Use password-based archivers (such as 7-Zip or RAR).
- Set up automatic upload to the cloud with two-factor authentication (e.g. Google Drive + SMS confirmation).
If the records contain sensitive information, delete them after use with specialized programs (such as Shreddit for Android) that erase the data without the possibility of recovery.
π‘
Never store records of conversations with bank details or passwords on your phone. Even if the device is locked, attackers can extract files through recovery or a PC connection.
