Xiaomi Conversations Recording: How to Set Up and Save Important Calls

Recording phone conversations on Xiaomi smartphones is a useful feature that helps you capture important details of conversations, preserve evidence for legal purposes, or simply remember what you hear. However, in recent versions of MIUI (especially 13/14), standard recording capabilities are often hidden or limited due to Google’s tightening privacy policies and local laws. In this article, we will discuss all the working ways to activate recordings, from built-in tools to circumventing restrictions using third-party solutions.

It's important to understand that the legality of recording conversations depends on the laws of your country: Most regions require notification of the person recording, otherwise the audio file will not have legal force, we do not call for breaking laws, the article is purely technical.

The instructions below are checked on the Redmi Note 12 Pro+, Xiaomi 13T, POCO F5 and other devices with MIUI 12-14 based on Android 12-14. If your smartphone runs on an older firmware (for example, MIUI 11), some menu items may differ - we will warn you about this separately.

1. Built-in conversation recording in MIUI: where to look and how to turn on

In older versions of MIUI (up to 12.5), call recording was available by default in the standard Phone app, and now this feature is either removed or hidden deep in the settings. Here's how to find it on current firmware:

Open the Phone app (tube icon), then:

1. Slip on three dots in the upper right corner → select Settings.
2. Scroll down to the Recording of Conversations section (on some models – Recording of Calls).
3. Activate the Write automatically switch or select Write manually.
4. In the Warehouse submenu, specify the folder to save files (by default — MIUI/sound_recorder/calls).

If you don't have a Record Conversations menu item, your firmware doesn't support it, so move to the next section with third-party solutions.

On some models (e.g. Redmi 10C), the recording only appears after the first manual start. Try pressing the Record button (if it appears on the screen) during the call.

2. Recording via Google Phone: an alternative for MIUI based on Android One

Xiaomi devices with a “clean” Android One (such as the Mi A3 or Xiaomi 11 Lite 5G NE) use the Google Phone app instead of the standard Phone from MIUI.

Steps for activation:

1. Open Google Phone → click on the profile avatar in the upper right corner.
2. Select Call Settings → Recording calls.
3. Enable the option to Always Write or Write selectively.
4. Confirm permissions to access the microphone and storage.

Restriction: Google blocks recording on Android 12+ devices in some regions (e.g. EU).If the recording button is inactive, try changing the region in your phone settings to India or the US (see section 5).

4. Activate the option to Write automatically or set exceptions.

Note: some applications may conflict with MIUI Optimization. If the recording is interrupted, add the program to the exceptions:

Manual recording through the engineering menu (for advanced)

On some Xiaomi models (such as the Redmi Note 11 Pro or POCO X4 Pro), recording conversations can be activated through a hidden engineering menu, which requires caution - wrong actions can disrupt the phone.

Instructions:

1. Open the Phone app and enter the code: ##36446337##
2. In the engineering menu, select Audio → Normal Mode → Type.
3. Find the Voice Call Recording option and set the Enabled value.
4. Save the settings and restart the phone.

After that, a recording button should appear in the standard Phone application. If it is not available, check the settings in Settings → System → Additional → For developers → USB debugging (turn it on).

Circumventing Regional Restrictions: Changing Country in Settings

As mentioned earlier, Google and Xiaomi block the recording of calls in some regions (EU, Russia, Ukraine, etc.) To circumvent this restriction, you can temporarily change the country in the phone settings:

Steps:

1. Go to Settings → Additional → Language and Region.
2. Select Region and install India, USA or Indonesia (where entry is allowed).
3. Reboot the phone.
4. Check for the recording option in the Phone or Google Phone app.

Once you set up the record, you can return the original region, the function will remain active, but note that changing the region may affect:

• 📡 Available networks 4G/5G (Some operators block roaming).
• 🛒 Prices in Google Play and Mi Store.
• 📅 Date/time formats.

The change of region is a temporary solution, and once the MIUI is updated, the restriction may return, and the procedure will have to be repeated.

6 Where records are stored and how to keep them

By default, records files are saved in a folder MIUI/sound_recorder/calls (for the built-in voice recorder or in the application folder (for third-party programs) so as not to lose important audio files:

1. Connect your phone to your PC via USB and copy the recordings to the cloud or hard drive.
2. Use Google Drive or Mi Cloud for automatic backup (configure Settings → Sync).
3. For long-term storage, convert files from.amr to.mp3 with applications like Audio Converter.

Note: If you use the recording for legal purposes, save the original files without editing. Any changes (trimming, converting, amplifying) may cast doubt on their validity.

⚠️ The court may request file metadata (date, time, phone model) to be deleted when transferring the record.

7. Frequent problems and their solutions

Even after you set it up properly, the recording may not work, and let's look at the typical errors and how to fix them:

• 🔇 The recording is ongoing, but no one can hear the interlocutor. → Check the sound source in the app settings (should be VoIP or Voice Call). On some Xiaomi helps disable Noise Settings → Sound.
• 📵 The application does not start when you call. → Add it to the battery optimization exceptions (see Section 3). Also check AutoRun permits.
• 🔄 Recording ends in 30 seconds. → This is the limitation of Android 12.+. Solution: Use Boldbeast with Root Mode setting (requires unlocking the bootloader).
• 📱 No sound in the recording when using headphones → Turn off Bluetooth headphones before calling or select the option Use the main microphone in the application settings.

If none of the methods worked, check:

1. MIUI version (update the firmware through Settings → About Phone → System Update).
2. Root rights (on some firmware, the record works only with them).
3. Conflicts with other applications (for example, Truecaller or Call Blocking can block the recording).
