Why apps need exceptions on Xiaomi Redmi Note 7
Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 is equipped with an aggressive MIUI optimization system that automatically suspends the background operation of applications to save battery power, as a result of messengers like Telegram or Viber stop delivering notifications on time, health trackers lose data, and some games reset progress when switching between tasks.
Adding an app to exceptions solves these problems, but requires fine-tuning several parameters. Unlike new Xiaomi models (like the Redmi Note 12), where the interface is simplified, the Redmi Note 7 (2019) has a deeper path to these settings, which is easy to skip unless you know where to look. This guide will be suitable for MIUI 10-14 firmware (including global and Chinese versions).
Itโs important to understand that there are 3 exceptions on the Redmi Note 7 for autoboot, battery optimization, and background blocking, and they need to be configured separately. Skipping at least one item will lead to the fact that the application will still โfall asleepโ after 5-10 minutes of inactivity.
Preparation: Verification of MIUI version and access rights
Before setting up exceptions, make sure your Redmi Note 7 runs on the current firmware version.Old MIUI builds (e.g. MIUI 10.3) may not display some menu items.
- Open the Settings. โ The phone.
- Scroll to the MIUI version section.
- If the version is older than MIUI 12, update the system through Settings โ Software Update.
Also, to change some settings (such as unlocking autoboot) you will need developer rights to activate them:
- Go to Settings. โ The phone.
- Click on the MIUI version 7 times until the notification โYou became a developerโ appears.
- Return to the main settings menu and open Additional settings โ Developer settings.
Method 1: Addition to autoboot exceptions
Autoboot allows the app to start automatically after the phone is restarted. Without this setup, messengers and services (such as WhatsApp or Google Play Services) may not work correctly after the device is turned off/on.
Instructions for Redmi Note 7:
- Open Settings โ Applications โ Application Management.
- Select the application you want (such as Telegram).
- Slip on Autoboot.
- Activate the switch to Allow Autoboot.
If you don't have the Autoboot option in the app menu, it's hidden in the security settings.
- Go to Settings โ Security โ Autoboot.
- Find the app in the list and enable autoload for it.

โ ๏ธ Note: Some Redmi Note 7 firmware (e.g. Chinese) may call the Autoboot option Background Launch. MIUI last-minute.
Method 2: Disabling Battery Optimization
MIUI by default restricts the background activity of applications to save charge, which leads to notifications coming with a delay (or not at all), and geolocation in Google Maps or Yandex.Navigator stops after a few minutes.
- Go to Settings โ Battery and Performance โ Battery Consumption Management.
- Select Application Selection (or Battery Settings for Applications on newer versions of MIUI).
- Find the right application and set a No Limits mode for it.
Some system applications (such as Google Play Services) may require additional action:
- In the same menu, tap on Settings (cog icon in the upper corner).
- Activate System Processes.
- Find the process (e.g. com.google.android.gms) and install it without restrictions.
| Optimization mode | What's going on? | What applications are suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| No restrictions. | The application works in the background without restrictions, maximum battery consumption | Messengers, navigators, fitness trackers |
| Intellectual control | MIUI decides when to suspend background work | Social networks, email clients |
| Limit background activity | The application "falls asleep" after 3-5 minutes of inactivity | Games that are rarely used utilities |

If the battery runs out too quickly after optimizing, check Settings โ Battery โ Statistics. It may be another application that is to blame, not the one you made the exception for.
Method 3: Unlock background activity (hidden menu)
Even after battery optimization is disabled, MIUI can block background processes through the hidden Special Permissions menu, which is not in the standard settings, but can be opened through the developer's settings.
Instructions:
- Activate the developerโs settings (see the โPreparationโ section).
- Go to Settings โ Additional settings โ Developer settings.
- Scroll down and find Special Application Permissions (or App Special Permissions in English firmware).
- Select Background Activity Limitation.
- Find the right application and disable the restriction for it.
If this is not the case, try an alternative route:
- Install the โSecurityโ app from Google Play (if removed).
- Open it and go to Memory Management โ Autostart.
- Activate auto-start for the desired application and turn off Background Restriction.

Problems and Solutions: Why the App Still โDropsโ
If after all the settings the application continues to pause, check the following points:
- ๐ Energy-saving regime: MIUI It can ignore exceptions if Super Savings or Ultra Savings are enabled. Turn it off in Settings. โ Battery โ Energy saving regimes.
- ๐ก๏ธ Antivirus or Clean Master: Stock Security app sometimes blocks background activity "for security." โ Optimization โ Autostart and check the settings.
- ๐ Cache Error: Reset the app's cache Settings โ Annexes โ [name] โ Warehouse โ Clear the cache.
- ๐ฑ Third-party firmware: Castom builds (like LineageOS or Pixel Experience) may not support standard mechanisms MIUI. In this case, you will need to manually adjust through ADB.
If the problem persists, try resetting the battery settings:
- Go to Settings. โ Battery โ โฎ (menu) โ Reset the battery settings.
- Confirm the action.
- Restart your phone and reset the exceptions.
โ ๏ธ Note: Redmi Note 7 with firmware MIUI 10 and below resetting battery settings can cause loss of consumption statistics. โ Battery โ Statistics โ โฎ โ Exports.
Additional settings for messengers and social networks
Apps like WhatsApp, Viber, or Facebook require separate permissions to work smoothly, and in addition to the standard exceptions, follow these steps:
- ๐ฑ Notifications: Go to Settings โ Notifications โ [App name] and turn on all switches (especially Show notifications and Sound).
- ๐ Autosynchronization: Activate synchronization for account in Settings โ Accounts and synchronization โ [your account].
- ๐ก Mobile data in the background: Allow the application to use mobile internet in the background: Settings โ SIM-maps and mobile networks โ Transfer of data โ Using data in the background.
- ๐ Permissions: Check that the app has access to Contacts, Warehouse and Microphone (if necessary).
For Telegram and Signal, it is also recommended:
- Open the application and go to its settings (three lines in the upper left corner).
- Select Notifications and Sounds โ Notification channels.
- For each channel (messages, groups, calls) set a high priority.
๐ก
It's critical for messengers to turn off battery optimization and add to autoboot. Without these two actions, notifications will arrive with a delay of up to 30 minutes.
