Are you trying to find a voice recorder on your Xiaomi, but you can't find it on the menu? Or do the recorded files disappear after the update? This problem is familiar to many owners of Redmi, POCO and Mi smartphones - the manufacturer often hides standard applications in non-obvious sections or removes them from the firmware altogether. In this article, we will analyze all possible ways to find the built-in voice recorder, restore it through the system settings and even install alternative solutions if the standard application is not available.
The MIUI feature is that the location of the recorder can vary depending on the shell version and the phone model. For example, on the Xiaomi 13 Pro with MIUI 14, the application is hidden in the Tools folder, and on the Redmi Note 12 it is not in the default menu at all, we analyzed 15+ models and collected universal instructions that will work even on older devices like the Redmi 4X or new flagships like the Xiaomi 14 Ultra.
Importantly, if you were updating your phone through fastboot or installing custom firmware, the recorder could be removed. APK-File โ we will show you where to download it and how to integrate it into the system.
1. Standard location of the recorder in MIUI
On most Xiaomi smartphones, the built-in voice recorder is located in one of three places:
- ๐ Tools folder** on the home screen or in the app menu. Most often the recorder lies next to the Calculator, Lantern and Compassยป.
- ๐ Search by system**: scroll down the main screen and type in the search bar "Dictator" (or "Recorder" on English firmware).
- โ๏ธ Settings โ Additionally**: on certain models (e.g, POCO F5) The voice recorder is hidden in the Settings section โ Additionally. โ Tools.
If none of these methods worked, check out the MIUI version:
| MIUI version | Typical location of the recorder | Models where confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| MIUI 12โ13 | Tools folder or search by system | Redmi Note 10 Pro, Xiaomi Mi 11 |
| MIUI 14+ | Hidden in Settings โ Applications โ Application Management โ System | Xiaomi 13T, POCO X5 Pro |
| Global ROM | No default (installation required) | Redmi A2, POCO M5 |
โ ๏ธ Attention: On smartphones with Global ROM (European/Indian firmware, the recorder is often removed due to licensing restrictions, and you will have to install it manually in this case - instructions in section 4.
2. How to turn on the recorder if it is hidden in the system
Sometimes the recorder doesn't appear on the menu, but is physically present in the firmware. To unlock it, follow the following steps:
- Open Settings โ Applications โ Application Management.
- Slip on three dots in the upper right corner and select "Show Systems."
- In the list, find the "Dictophon" (or "Recorder", "Sound Recorder").

If the app is not listed, try activating it through the developer mode:
Open Settings โ About Phone |7 times click on MIUI | Version Return to Settings โ Additional โ For developers | Find the option Enable system applications and activate it
-->
After that, the recorder should appear on the menu, and if not, check if it is disabled through ADB (the guide for advanced users in the spoiler below).

3 Where the recorder saves records on Xiaomi
By default, all audio files from the recorder are saved in the folder:
/storage/emulated/0/Recordings/Or (on older versions of MIUI):
/storage/emulated/0/MIUI/SoundRecorder/To quickly find the records:
- ๐ Open the Files app** (Files by Google or standard) MIUI File Manager).
โ ๏ธ Note: After resetting settings or updating MIUI Recordings folder may disappear. You can restore records through Google Drive (if sync was enabled) or DiskDigger (root rights required).
๐ก
If you have a lot of records, sort them by date: in MIUI File Manager, tap them into three dots โ Sort โ Date (in descending order) so you can quickly find the latest files.
4. Installation of the recorder, if it is not in the system
If there is no built-in recorder, there are three ways to return it:
Method 1: Installation APK-recorder
Download the original Dictator app** for MIUI from a trusted source (e.g. APKMirror).
- com.android.soundrecorder โ for Android One (e.g. Mi A3)
After installation:
- Reboot the phone.
- Open Settings โ Applications โ Application Management.
- Find the installed recorder and give it permissions for the microphone and storage.
Method 2: Alternative voice recorders from Google Play
If the standard application is not installed, try analogues:
- ๐ค ASR Voice Recorder** โ Supports background recording and cloud storage.
- ๐ฑ Easy Voice Recorder** - Simple interface, export to the MP3/WAV.
Method 3: Dictator through Google Assistant
If you need a fast recording without installing apps:
- Say, โStart recordingโ or โWrite down my voice.โ
๐ก
On MIUI smartphones for POCO (like the POCO X6 Pro), the standard voice recorder is often replaced by Voice Notes** from POCO Launcher. Check the Notes folder in the app menu.
5. dictaphone settings: how to improve recording quality
Xiaomi's standard voice recorder supports settings that many users don't notice.
- Launch the recorder.
- Slip three points in the top right corner.
- Select "Settings"**.
Key parameters for optimization:
On models with multiple microphones (for example, Xiaomi 13 Ultra) in the settings will appear the option โStereo Recordingโ** โ turn it on for a larger sound.
โ ๏ธ Note: When recording in format WAV Files take up 5-10 times more space than MP3. For example, the hour of recording in WAV (16 bits, 44 kHz) weighs ~600 MB, and in MP3 (128 kbit/s โ total ~60MB.
6. Solving the problems with the recorder
If the recorder does not record, gives out errors or records are distorted, check:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The recorder won't open. | Application disabled or damaged | Reinstall APK or reset the app settings in Settings โ Apps |
| Recording interrupted | Battery optimization blocks background work | Add a voice recorder to exceptions: Settings โ Battery โ Battery Optimization โ All applications โ Recorder โ Without restrictions |
| Hearing noise/wheezing | Dust in the microphone or low bitrate | Clean the microphone with compressed air and raise the bitrate in the settings to 192 kbit / s |
| Files are not saved. | No rights to record or damage SD-map | Give permission to store and check the memory card for errors |
If after the MIUI update the recorder stopped working, try:
- Install an older version of the APK (e.g., with MIUI 12 if you have MIUI 14).
