Are you trying to find a voice recorder on your Xiaomi, but you can't find it on the menu? Or do the recorded files disappear after the update? This problem is familiar to many owners of Redmi, POCO and Mi smartphones - the manufacturer often hides standard applications in non-obvious sections or removes them from the firmware altogether. In this article, we will analyze all possible ways to find the built-in voice recorder, restore it through the system settings and even install alternative solutions if the standard application is not available.
The MIUI feature is that the location of the recorder can vary depending on the shell version and the phone model. For example, on the Xiaomi 13 Pro with MIUI 14, the application is hidden in the Tools folder, and on the Redmi Note 12 it is not in the default menu at all, we analyzed 15+ models and collected universal instructions that will work even on older devices like the Redmi 4X or new flagships like the Xiaomi 14 Ultra.

1. Standard location of the recorder in MIUI
On most Xiaomi smartphones, the built-in voice recorder is located in one of three places:
- 📁 Tools folder** on the home screen or in the app menu. Most often the recorder lies next to the Calculator, Lantern and Compass».
- 🔍 Search by system**: scroll down the main screen and type in the search bar "Dictator" (or "Recorder" on English firmware).
- ⚙️ Settings → Additionally**: on certain models (e.g, POCO F5) The voice recorder is hidden in the Settings section → Additionally. → Tools.
If none of these methods worked, check out the MIUI version:

⚠️ Attention: On smartphones with Global ROM (European/Indian firmware, the recorder is often removed due to licensing restrictions, and you will have to install it manually in this case - instructions in section 4.
2. How to turn on the recorder if it is hidden in the system
Sometimes the recorder doesn't appear on the menu, but is physically present in the firmware. To unlock it, follow the following steps:
- Open Settings → Applications → Application Management.
- Slip on three dots in the upper right corner and select "Show Systems."
- In the list, find the "Dictophon" (or "Recorder", "Sound Recorder").
- Click "Enable"** and confirm the action.
If the app is not listed, try activating it through the developer mode:

3 Where the recorder saves records on Xiaomi
By default, all audio files from the recorder are saved in the folder:
/storage/emulated/0/Recordings/Or (on older versions of MIUI):

- 📂 Open the Files app** (Files by Google or standard) MIUI File Manager).
⚠️ Note: After resetting settings or updating MIUI Recordings folder may disappear. You can restore records through Google Drive (if sync was enabled) or DiskDigger (root rights required).

If you have a lot of records, sort them by date: in MIUI File Manager, tap them into three dots → Sort → Date (in descending order) so you can quickly find the latest files.
4. Installation of the recorder, if it is not in the system
If there is no built-in recorder, there are three ways to return it:
Method 1: Installation APK-recorder
Download the original Dictator app** for MIUI from a trusted source (e.g. APKMirror).

After installation:
- Reboot the phone.
- Open Settings → Applications → Application Management.
- Find the installed recorder and give it permissions for the microphone and storage.
Method 2: Alternative voice recorders from Google Play
If the standard application is not installed, try analogues:

Method 3: Dictator through Google Assistant

Xiaomi's standard voice recorder supports settings that many users don't notice.
- Launch the recorder.
- Slip three points in the top right corner.
- Select "Settings"**.
Key parameters for optimization:
On models with multiple microphones (for example, Xiaomi 13 Ultra) in the settings will appear the option “Stereo Recording”** – turn it on for a larger sound.
⚠️ Note: When recording in format WAV Files take up 5-10 times more space than MP3. For example, the hour of recording in WAV (16 bits, 44 kHz) weighs ~600 MB, and in MP3 (128 kbit/s — total ~60MB.
6. Solving the problems with the recorder
If the recorder does not record, gives out errors or records are distorted, check:

7. Hidden functions of Xiaomi voice recorder
Few people know, but the built-in MIUI recorder can do more than just record sound.
- 🎵 Cutting records**: after saving the file, tap it in the list → «Edit» → trim unnecessary fragments.
- 📤 Export to text**: on models with MIUI 14+ You can convert speech to text (you need an Internet connection). → «Transformation into text».
On Xiaomi 12S Ultra and the latest flagships, the recorder supports recording in Dolby Atmos format (select “Sound Quality → Dolby” in the settings), which takes up more space, but sounds larger.
