Owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones often face the need to quickly find stored audio. The standard Dictophone application is one of the most popular tools in the MIUI system and the new HyperOS. However, when completed, the user does not always understand which directory of internal storage or memory card the file was placed in. This makes it difficult when trying to send a record via messenger, copy to a computer or simply organize files by folder.
Finding the right audio file is complicated by the fact that the Android file structure has its own features, and the shell from the Chinese manufacturer adds additional layers of nesting. Unlike simple button phones, here the records are not “in plain sight” in the root of memory. Understanding the logic of the Android file system will help you instantly navigate thousands of files. In this article, we will discuss in detail the standard ways, how to change the storage location and how to work with the audio archive.
What’s relevant for MIUI 12 may be different from the folder structure in HyperOS 1.0. We’ll look at the universal search methods that work on most current models, including the Mi series, Redmi Note and flagship Xiaomi 13/14. You’ll learn not only to find files, but also to manage them using built-in tools and third-party file managers.
The standard path to the record folder
By default, the Android system on Xiaomi smartphones assigns a specific directory to store all audio files created by the regular application. Unless you changed the settings manually, all your records will be located at a specific address. → MIUI → sound_recorder. It is in this folder that the system automatically folds files immediately after the recording stops.
Inside the folder. sound_recorder You may find additional subcategories if you've used different recording modes, for example, you may create separate branches for interviews or lectures.m4a or.mp3, The file name is usually generated automatically based on the date and time of creation, which makes it easier to sort but makes it difficult to search by topic of conversation without first renaming it.
⚠️ Attention: Folder MIUI Do not delete the directory itself or change its access rights, otherwise the Dictator application may cease to function or save files with errors.
To get to the right place quickly, you can use the built-in Explorer. Open the Explorer app, select Internal Drive, and sequentially follow the path above. If you use a third-party file manager, such as Total Commander or Files by Google, the structure will remain the same, only the navigation interface will change.
Hidden system files
Using a built-in conductor to search
The most convenient way to find the desired record is to use the functionality of the Dictator app itself or the system conductor with filtering. In the standard application, the records are sorted by date, but you can access the file through the properties menu. Click on the desired entry in the list, select the option “Detail” or “Properties”, and the system will show the full path to the file.
The system explorer on Xiaomi has powerful search tools. Instead of manually wandering through folders, use the search bar at the top of the screen. Enter a file extension like.m4a, or a part of the name if you remember the date of the record. This is especially effective if you've written a lot of files and got entangled in the chronology.
- 📁 Open the “Conductor” app on the main screen.
- 🔍 Click on the magnifying glass at the top of the interface.
- 📝 Enter the format name (mp3, m4a, wav) or keyword.
- 📂 Select the desired file from the drop-down list of results.
It's important to note that you don't search for audio content (speech recognition) in a standard Explorer, you only search for metadata, file name, date of creation, and type. If you renamed files manually, it's much more efficient to search by title.
💡
Using file extension (.m4a) search in Explorer saves up to 80% of the time compared to manually browsing folders.
Set up a way to save records
One of the useful features of the MIUI shell is the ability to transfer the storage space of records to the SD memory card. This is critical for users who actively use the recorder to record lectures, interviews or podcasts in high quality. Audio files occupy a significant amount of volume, and transferring them to an external drive frees up valuable internal memory space.
To change the way you save, open the Dictophone app. In the upper right corner, click on the menu icon (three dots or gears). In the drop-down list, select Settings. Find the Save Path or Storage Location section. If the device has a memory card installed, the system will prompt you to choose between "Inner Memory" and «SD-map».
Once you change the settings, all new records will automatically be saved to the appropriate folder on the external media, the old files will remain in the same place, they will have to be transferred manually if necessary. SD-The card will be similar to the internal one: SD-card → MIUI → sound_recorder.
⚠️ Note: When you remove the memory card, access to the new records will be lost before the drive is re-installed.
If the path selection option is missing, it could mean that your version of the app or smartphone model does not support this feature, or the memory card is formatted as an internal memory (Adoptable Storage) rather than a portable storage.
Synchronization with Xiaomi cloud services
Xiaomi’s ecosystem offers a convenient data synchronization feature via Mi Cloud. If this option is activated, your audio recordings are automatically copied to the cloud. This not only backs up, but also allows you to access files from other devices, including computers and tablets, through the i.mi.com web interface.
To enable sync, go to Settings → Mi Account → Mi Cloud → Recorder. Make sure the slider is activated. When synced, deleting a file on your phone can cause it to be deleted in the cloud, too, so be careful when cleaning storage. Cloud storage is especially useful for important documents that cannot be lost in the event of a smartphone breakdown.
The files in the cloud are stored in their original quality, but consider the limits of the free plan Mi Cloud (usually 5 GB). If you record a lot of hourly audio, the space can quickly run out, in which case it is recommended to periodically upload the archives to the hard drive of the computer.
- ☁️ Go to the Mi Account settings.
- 🔄 Activate synchronization for the Dictator application».
- 🌐 Check the download status in the notification curtain.
- 💻 Access to files is possible through the browser on any device.
Using third-party cloud services such as Google Drive or Yandex.Disk is also possible, but requires manual configuration of the folder autoload. sound_recorder in the application of a specific cloud service.
Recovery of deleted records
Accidental deletion of an important audio record is a bad situation, but often fixable. In modern versions of MIUI and HyperOS, there is a shopping cart in the Dictophone application, files removed from the record list do not disappear instantly, but are moved to a special buffer, where they are stored for 30 days.
To check the Recycle Bin, open the Dictator app, go to the List tab (or click on the folder icon). At the bottom or in the menu, find Deleted or Recycle Bin. There you will see all recently deleted files. Select the one you want and click Restore to return it to the main list.
| Method of recovery | Efficiency | Conditions required | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basket in the annex | 100% | Less than 30 days have passed. | Low. |
| Backup copy of Mi Cloud | 100% | Availability of backup before removal | Medium |
| Programs for PC (DiskDigger) | 40-60% | Root rights are desirable | Tall. |
| Calling the service | Low. | Physical integrity of memory | Very high. |
If the file is deleted from the recycle bin, it is impossible to restore it with regular means, in which case you can try specialized software for data recovery by connecting the phone to the computer in debugging mode via USB. However, success is not guaranteed, especially if a long time has passed since the deletion and the memory has been overwritten with new data.
💡
Do not write new files or install heavy applications immediately after deleting an important record. This will increase the chances of successful data recovery.
Frequent problems and their solution
Users may experience a situation where the recorder stops saving files or records disappear after a reboot, most often due to lack of space or errors in the file system, if the memory is filled by 98-99%, the system blocks the creation of new files.
Another common problem is the failure of access rights. Once the system is updated, the Dictator app may lose permission to write to internal memory. Check this in Settings → Apps → Dictator → Access Rights. Make sure that access to the storage is allowed.
If files are saved but not played (format error), the file header may have been damaged when written. Try converting the file through online services or a VLC player that can work with damaged containers.
⚠️ Attention: Clear the cache of the Dictophone app regularly. The accumulation of temporary files can lead to malfunction of the program and errors when saving.
In rare cases, resetting the app itself to factory settings helps, which will delete the setting history, but will not affect the audio files themselves. Go to Settings → Apps → Recorder → Clean → Reset.
