You try to record a voice message or use a voice recorder on a Xiaomi smartphone, but instead you see an annoying notification saying, "Dictorney is used by another application"? This error not only interferes with work, but also confuses you - because no other programs you have run. What is it, and how to restore the recorder to work?
It turns out that the problem is typical for Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices based on MIUI. It arises from the features of managing audio streams in the system, access rights conflicts or “hungry” background processes. In this article, we will analyze all possible causes of error, from banal to hidden, and also give step-by-step instructions for their elimination – from rebooting a smartphone to manually cleaning the cache of system services.
Important: solutions are suitable for all current versions of MIUI 12-14 and models - from Redmi Note 10 to Xiaomi 13 Ultra. If you encounter a problem after updating the system or installing a new application, pay special attention to the sections on rights conflicts and optimization of background processes.
Why is there an error “Dictorphone is used by another application”?
The message that the recorder is busy is not a failure, but a MIUI security mechanism, which blocks access to the microphone if it is already being used by another process, but often this process is invisible: the application may have ended incorrectly, the service may have stalled, or access rights have lost after an update.
- 🔄 The background app didn't release the microphone (e.g. Google Assistant, Mi) AI voice-messaging).
- 🛠️ Failure of the system service – for example, com.android.media or com.miui.voiceassist.
- 🔒 Conflict of rights: MIUI Restricted access to microphone for voice recorder due to privacy policy.
- 📱 Error after update – especially if you’ve recently updated MIUI or the Dictator itself.
- 🎤 Hardware problem (rarely): damage to the microphone or audio chip, but in this case the error will be permanent.
The first three things are most often to blame, for example, if you recently used voice search on Google or Yandex, the service may have failed to properly end your microphone, or MIUI automatically restricted access to audio to save battery (this is part of the Battery Optimization feature).
How to quickly check which application blocks the recorder
Before we go to radical measures (resetting or cleaning the cache), it is worth identifying the culprit, and you can do this through the built-in MIUI tools:
- Open Settings → Applications → Application Management.
- Slip on the three dots in the top right corner and select "Application Rights".
- Scroll to the Microphone section and see which programs have permission.
- Note the apps marked “Used” – they may not have freed up the resource.
If there are suspicious programs on the list (such as Mi Video, Google, or Facebook), try to force them to stop:
- 🛑 Go back to Application Management, find a problem app → «Forced stopping».
- 🔄 Reboot your smartphone and check the voice recorder.
💡
If there are apps on the microphone rights list that you don't use (like Mi Browser or Xiaomi Cloud), revoke them, which will not only solve the problem, but also increase privacy.
Method 1: Reboot the smartphone and reset the microphone rights
In 60 percent of cases, the error disappears after a simple reboot, which is because MIUI resets the "hang" audio streams when it starts, and if the reboot doesn't work, reset the microphone rights:
- Go to Settings → Applications → Application Management → Application Rights → Microphone.
- Turn off access for all applications (translate sliders to the position "Forbidden").
- Reboot your smartphone.
- Return to the microphone settings and allow access only for the Recorder and mission-critical applications (e.g. instant messengers).
This method works because MIUI sometimes forgets to release the microphone after use, and a full reset causes the system to re-initiate audio services.
Open the recorder and try to record a voice message
Make sure there is no microphone icon in the status bar (🎤)
Check the voice search function in Google/yandex
Reboot your phone again if the error repeats-->
Method 2: Clearing the cache and system services data
If the reset didn't work, the problem could be in the damaged cache of the system's audio services. Clearing the cache won't delete your data, but it will reset temporary files that can block the microphone.
Follow the following steps:
- Open Settings → Applications → Application Management.
- Slip on three points → “Show system processes”.
- Find and select the following services (if any are listed): com.android.media (media services) com.miui.voiceassist (Xiaomi voice assistant) com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox (Google Assistant)
For each service, click Clear Cache and Stop (if the button is active).
Reboot your smartphone.
Important: Do not clean the data ("Clear all data") for system services - this can cause MIUI to fail! If after cleaning the cache, the recorder has earned, but after a while the error returned, it is worth considering resetting the settings to factory (see section below).
What to do if there is no "Show System Processes" item?
Method 3: Disabling Battery Optimization for Recorder
Battery Optimization in MIUI aggressively limits background processes to save charge, sometimes causing applications (including the Recorder) to fail to properly free up resources.
- Go to Settings → Battery and Performance → Battery Consumption Management by Apps.
- Find the "Dictophone" list (or Recorder in English firmware).
- Select the "No Limits" mode.
- Repeat the steps for other apps that may be using the microphone (e.g. Google, WhatsApp).
It is also recommended to disable optimization for system services:
- 🔋 In the same menu, go to com.android.media and com.miui.voiceassist.
- 🔄 Set a “No Limits” regime for them».
After the changes, restart your smartphone. If the error was due to background restrictions, the recorder will work.
💡
Battery optimization is a common cause of microphone problems in MIUI. Disabling system service restrictions may increase battery consumption, but will restore audio stability.
Method 4: Reset application settings (without data loss)
If none of the previous methods worked, try resetting all the apps, which will return access rights, cache and permissions to factory values, but will not delete your files or accounts.
Instructions:
- Open Settings → Applications → Application Management.
- Slip on three points → “Reset application settings”.
- Confirm the action (a password may be required).
- After reset, restart your smartphone and reconfigure the microphone access rights (see Method 1).
This method is effective if the problem is caused by a permission conflict between applications, for example, if you previously revoked access to the microphone from the Recorder, and then tried to return it, but the system “forgot” to update the settings.
⚠️ Attention: App resets will also reset: All permissions (you have to re-allow camera access, geolocation, etc.) Notification settings. Home screen mounted widgets. We recommend that you take screenshots of important settings before resetting.
Method 5: Install an alternative voice recorder (if nothing helps)
If the system recorder never works, you can use a third-party application, many of which are independent of MIUI system services and can bypass locks.
| Annex | Advantages | Deficiencies |
|---|---|---|
| Easy Voice Recorder | Simple interface, background recording, support for MP3/WAV formats. | The commercial is free. |
| Hi-Q MP3 Voice Recorder | High quality recording, lossless compression, cloud storage. | Paid functions for recording phone calls. |
| ASR Voice Recorder | Speech recognition, export to text, work without the Internet. | A complex interface for beginners. |
To avoid conflict:
- Install the selected application from Google Play.
- Disable access to the microphone for the system recorder (in the rights settings).
- Allow access only for a new recorder.
Even if a third-party application is not good, the problem is likely hardware (a damaged microphone or audio chip), in which case, contact the service center.
What to do if an error occurs after the MIUI update
MIUI updates often bring not only new features, but also bugs. If a voice recorder error occurred immediately after the update, try:
- 🔄 Reverse to the previous version MIUI (if backup is available).
- 📥 Install the update manually (maybe your firmware was installed with an error).
- 📋 Report the bug through Mi Community (Xiaomi developers often quickly fix mass problems).
For manual installation of updates:
- Download the full firmware package for your model from the official Xiaomi website (Downloads section).
- Move the file to the root folder of internal memory (not to folders!).
- Open Settings → About the phone → System update.
- Slip on three points → “Select the update file” and specify the downloaded package.
⚠️ WARNING: If you install firmware through Fastboot or Recovery, make sure the version is compatible with your model! improper firmware can turn a smartphone into a 'brick».
