Xiaomi smartphones are no longer exotic โ they are now one of the most popular brands in the world, competing with Apple and Samsung in terms of sales. But despite the widespread popularity, many users still wonder: who actually makes Xiaomi phones? Is it a Chinese company with its own factories, or does it, like many other brands, outsource production?
In this article, we will look at where Xiaomiโs main production facilities are located, which companies are involved in assembling their smartphones, and how to distinguish the original phone from a fake. You will also learn why more than 90% of all Xiaomi smartphones are assembled in China, but the brand is actively developing production in India and Indonesia โ and how this affects the price and quality of devices.
Who owns the Xiaomi brand: a brief history of the company
Xiaomi Inc. was founded in 2010 in Beijing by a group of entrepreneurs led by Lei Jun, a former top manager of Kingsoft and Google China, and initially positioned itself as a manufacturer of affordable but high-tech electronics with a focus on software.
The first smartphone Xiaomi Mi 1 was released in 2011 and immediately attracted attention due to the powerful characteristics at a price 2 times lower than competitors. Already 3 years later, the company became the leader of the smartphone market in China, overtaking Samsung and Apple. Today Xiaomi is not only smartphones, but also an ecosystem of smart devices: from robot vacuum cleaners to electric scooters.
- ๐ 2010 โ Founding of the company in Beijing.
- ๐ฑ 2011 โ release of the first smartphone Mi 1.
- ๐ 2014 โ Entering international markets (India, Indonesia, Russia).
- ๐ 2021 โ Xiaomi becomes the second-largest smartphone brand in the world (according to Canalys).
It's important to understand that Xiaomi is not just a manufacturer, it's a technology company with its own ecosystem. It designs, it develops the firmware (MIUI), and it controls the quality, but not all smartphones are assembled in its own factories. Read on for who makes the production.
Where to assemble Xiaomi smartphones: countries and factories
Contrary to popular belief, Xiaomi does not have giant factories of its own, like Appleโs Foxconn, but instead uses an outsourcing model to partner with leading contract electronics manufacturers.
- ๐ญ Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry) is the worldโs largest electronics manufacturer, assembling iPhones, PlayStations and many Xiaomi models (e.g. flagships). Mi and Mix series.
- ๐ง BYD Electronic is a Chinese giant specializing in battery and smartphone assembly (including Redmi and POCO).
- ๐ค Wingtech manufactures mid-range and low-end devices, including some Redmi Note models.
- ๐ฎ๐ณ Dixon Technologies is an Indian partner engaged in local assembly for the Indian market.
Most of the plants are located in China (Guangdong, Jiangxi, Hubei provinces), but since 2015 Xiaomi has been actively developing production in other countries:
| Country. | City/Region | Models that are collected | Share of total production (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ๐จ๐ณ China | Shenzhen, Changsha, Nanchang | All series (Mi, Redmi, POCO, Black Shark) | ~70% |
| ๐ฎ๐ณ India | Noida, Sri City | Redmi, POCO, budget Mi | ~20% |
| ๐ฎ๐ฉ Indonesia | Jakarta, Batama | Redmi Note, POCO M | ~5% |
| ๐ง๐ท Brazil | manaus | Local versions for Latin America | ~3% |
| ๐ท๐บ Russia | Kaluga (Samsung Electronics Rus Kaluga plant) | Redmi Limited Parties for the EAEU | <2% |
Interestingly, even though Xiaomi is branding itself as a โChinese brand,โ many smartphones for the European and Indian markets are assembled outside of China, due to tax breaks and local manufacturing support programs (e.g. Make in India).

If you buy a Xiaomi smartphone in Russia, check the country of production in the settings along the way Settings โ About phone โ Model and equipment. Devices assembled in India or China are officially shipped to Russia, but may differ in configuration (for example, there is no Russian documentation in the box).
How to distinguish the original Xiaomi from a fake at the place of production
One of the key signs of counterfeiting is that the country of production is not official, for example, if you see a Xiaomi Mi 13 Ultra smartphone labeled "Made in Vietnam", it's a cause for concern: this model is only assembled in China.
Here is a list of the original smartphone features:
- ๐ท๏ธ Box sticker โ must contain the barcode, serial number and country of manufacture (e.g., โMade in China by Xiaomi Communications Co., Ltd.โ).
- ๐ Serial number โ checked on the official website mi.com/global/verify (for Chinese versions) or through the Mi Check app.
- ๐ฆ Set โ Original smartphones for Russia and Europe come with a European charging plug (type C) and Russian-language instructions.
- ๐ Firmware โ Fakes often run on โcustomโ versions of Android without MIUI or with heavily stripped-down functionality.
Particular attention should be paid to models for the Chinese market (for example, with the prefix China ROM), they are often sold cheaper, but:
โ ๏ธ Warning: Chinese-produced smartphones (China ROM) are not certified for Russia or Europe, which means they may not have support for LTE- bands of local operators (e.g. Band 20 for Tele2), and there is no Russian language in the system. You can reflash such a device to the global version MIUI, but it will take away your warranty.
What happens if you buy a gray Xiaomi from China?
Why Xiaomi is moving production out of China: economics and politics
Until 2018, almost all of Xiaomiโs smartphones were assembled in China, but due to the trade wars between the US and China, as well as rising salaries at local factories, the company began diversifying production.
- Tax incentives โ India has a Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) program that subsidizes local producers.
- Cheaper logistics โ Assembly in the country of sale reduces transportation costs and customs duties.
- Political risks โ restrictions on Chinese electronics exports (as in the case of Huawei) have forced Xiaomi to duplicate capacity.
For example, a plant in India (Noida) allows the company to save up to 20% on the cost of smartphones for the local market, while the quality of control remains at the same level as in China, Xiaomi sends its engineers to train local staff.
But it's unlikely that we'll move production out of China completely.
- ๐ง China has a concentrated infrastructure for the production of components (displays, chips, batteries).
- ๐จโ๐ฌ Chinese factories have higher levels of automation (robots, AI quality control).
- โก The rate of production of new models in China is 2-3 times higher than in foreign factories.
๐ก
Even if Xiaomi is built in India or Indonesia, its components (processor, camera, screen) are 99% made in China, Taiwan or South Korea, and local assembly is only about the final stage of installing the motherboard in the case and testing.
Quality control at Xiaomi plants: how to check smartphones
Whether the smartphone is assembled in China or India, all devices undergo multi-level quality control.
- Component Verification โ Every chip, display and battery is tested to meet Xiaomi standards.
- Automatic assembly โ robots install a motherboard, camera and other modules (in some factories, the share of manual labor does not exceed 10%).
- Stress tests โ smartphones are checked for overheating, moisture resistance (for models with IP53/IP68) and falls.
- Screen and camera calibration โ each display undergoes color calibration, and the cameras are tested to match DxOMark parameters.
Fun fact: At Foxconn's Shenzhen plant, Xiaomi's smartphone testing uses artificial intelligence, it analyzes thousands of photos taken by the phone's camera and compares them to reference images, and if the discrepancies exceed the permissible values, the device is sent for revision.
Once assembled, each smartphone receives a unique serial number that is entered into Xiaomiโs database, which allows you to track the history of the device from the factory to the store. If the serial number is missing or does not pass the check on mi.com, you are 100% fake or โgrayโ imports.
โ ๏ธ Warning: In 2022, Xiaomi faced the problem of "relabeled" smartphones - devices that were officially sold as Redmi but were actually re-stitched POCO or vice versa. To avoid being cheated, always check the model by serial number through the official Mi Check app (available on Google Play).
Comparison of the quality of smartphones from different countries: myths and reality
There is a popular belief amongst users that Xiaomi smartphones built in China are โbetterโ than those made in India or Indonesia.
| Parameter | China | India | Indonesia/Brazil |
|---|---|---|---|
| ๐ง Assemblance quality | โญโญโญโญโญ (maximum automation) | โญโญโญโญ (Manual control in the final stage) | โญโญโญ (small defects of the shell are possible) |
| ๐ฆ Complementation | Full (charging, cable, case) | May be missing a cover or headphones | Often without charging (cable only) |
| ๐ Warranty | 12โ24 months (depending on the market) | 12 months (only for local versions) | 6-12 months (limited) |
| ๐ฐ Price. | Higher (because of logistics) | Below (tax benefits) | Average (depending on the exchange rate) |
In practice, the difference in quality between smartphones from China and India is minimal, with the main differences being:
- ๐ถ Network support โ Indian versions may not have the LTE Band 20 (800 MHz) bands important to Russia.
- ๐ Chargers โ In Asia, power supplies are often supplied to 10W, whereas in Europe, power supplies are supplied to 18W/33W.
- ๐ฃ๏ธ Localizations โ Chinese firmware may not have Russian out of the box.
If you buy a smartphone from the official Xiaomi store (for example, on mi.com or from authorized retailers like the Messenger), the country of production does not matter - all devices undergo the same control, but when buying with AliExpress or โhandsโ you should be careful.
Check the serial number on the official website
Make sure the model supports Russian LTE- bands
Pay attention to the complete set (must be a European fork)
Buy only from official dealers or in branded stores

The future of Xiaomi production: what to expect in 2026-2026
In 2026, Xiaomi announced several key changes in its production strategy:
- Expansion of production in Europe โ it is planned to open an assembly plant in Poland or Hungary for supply to the EU market.
- Increased automation share โ by 2026, Xiaomi wants to increase the share of robots in factories to 80% (now ~65%).
- Localization of battery production โ the company is investing in battery factories in India to reduce its dependence on China.
- Eco-friendly materials โ from 2026, all new models will contain at least 30% of recycled components.
Xiaomi is also actively developing smart factories, enterprises where most processes are controlled by AI, such as the Mi AI Quality Control system, which analyzes build defects in real time and adjusts equipment settings, at its plant in Changsha, China.
What does this mean for buyers?
- ๐ Smartphone prices could be driven down by local production in Europe.
- ๐ Battery quality will be improved by monitoring all phases of production.
- ๐ฑ Eco-friendliness will be one of the key advantages of the brand (already now Xiaomi 14 comes in packaging from recycled cardboard).
But there are risks, such as moving production to Europe could lead to higher prices due to high wages and taxes, but the experience of Samsung (which assembles smartphones in Hungary) suggests that the increase will be small, in the range of 5 to 10 percent.
