How to know if your phone has been used: Xiaomi’s full check

Buying a smartphone, especially a flagship level, always involves the risk of encountering unscrupulous sellers issuing restored or demo copies for new ones.

In the world of Xiaomi technology, this problem is especially acute due to the huge popularity of the brand and the developed market for refabished devices.

The ability to independently and quickly determine whether the phone was in use, will save you money and nerves, avoiding the purchase of a low-quality gadget.

There are many ways to check, ranging from a simple visual inspection to a deep analysis of system logs and the date of the first activation.

Visual inspection and configuration check

The first thing that catches the eye when getting a device is its appearance and packaging condition.

The original Xiaomi box always has a clear printing, smooth faces and tightly fitting valves.

If the factory film is pasted carelessly, has air bubbles or traces of re-adhesion, this is a sure sign that the box was opened.

Carefully inspect the ends of the smartphone in good lighting, as even minimal micro scratches around the USB-C charging port or dynamic grille speak of exploitation.

The most reliable way to know if a phone has been used is to check its activation status on the manufacturer’s servers.

To verify, go to the official Xiaomi support website in the authentication section.

If the activation date coincides with the day of your purchase or later, the device is new.

Checking charging cycles and battery status

A lithium polymer battery is a consumable that degrades with each charge and discharge cycle.

In new smartphones, the number of recharge cycles usually does not exceed 1-3 units (factory testing).

To find out the real state of the battery, you can use a hidden engineering menu or special applications.

⚠️ Note: If the charging cycle parameter shows 0, but the activation date was a year ago, it is possible that the battery was changed or reset the controller, which is characteristic of poor quality recovery.

You can also install third-party utilities like Ampere or AccuBattery.

They allow you to track the real capacity and wear rate in percentage.

The new battery has a wear of 0-2%, while active use during the year gives about 5-10% wear.

Diagnostics through engineering menu and tests

Built-in diagnostic module CIT (Customer Integration Test) allows you to check all components of the smartphone.

This will help to identify hidden defects that may have occurred during previous use or poor-quality repairs.

To enter the test menu, use the code ##64663## or go to the settings via the "About Phone" item.

Walk through the main points of testing, paying attention to the touch screen and cameras.

In the touchscreen test, swipe your finger over all areas of the display: there should be no “dead” zones or false presses.
