Buying a smartphone is always an exciting process, especially when it comes to popular brands like Xiaomi, Redmi or Poco. The electronics market is full of offers, and among them it is easy to get lost not only the original devices, but also restored models that are sold as new. Checking the phone before paying is not just a whim of a meticulous buyer, but a necessary measure of the security of your finances.
Many users are wondering if you can visually distinguish a fresh device from a factory that has been in use or refabricated. The answer is simple: if you know where to look, modern technology can hide the traces of software use, but physical and system tags are almost always left.
In this article, we will look at all the diagnostic methods available, from a simple inspection of the box to a deep analysis of system logs. The most reliable way is a comprehensive check, combining the analysis of appearance, IMEI code reconciliation and checking the date of the first activation on the manufacturer's server. Ignoring at least one of the steps can lead to the purchase of a cat in a bag.
Visual inspection of packaging and configuration
The first thing you come across when you get an order is a box. Xiaomi's factory packaging always looks perfect: dense cardboard, clear printing, no skewing. Notice the seals: global versions often don't have them, but the box itself must be factory sealed or have a branded distributor sticker.
Inside the box, all accessories, such as cable, charger and paper clip, must lie in separate niches or be neatly packaged in polyethylene. If you see cables just thrown over the phone, and the instructional cables are the first sign that the box has been opened. The original films on the screen also play an important role: they must be glued perfectly flat, without air bubbles and dust underneath.
β οΈ Warning: If there are marks of autopsy, scuffing on the edges or no screen safety film on the box, refuse to buy immediately, even if the seller claims that it was just checked in the store".
For example, European versions often do not have a charger in the package, whereas global versions are usually complete.
Checking IMEI codes and serial number
Each smartphone has a unique identifier, the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI), which is assigned to a device in the factory and must not match any other phone in the world. On Xiaomi devices, the IMEI can be found in several places: on a sticker on the box, in the system menu and knocked out on the SIM card tray (on older models) or in the software.
To find out the IMEI on the screen, dial the universal code *#06#. A menu will appear that will indicate one or two numbers (for dual-symbol models), these numbers should be one in one with those printed on the box. If the numbers are different, you either have a reassembled phone or a device with a modified firmware.
- π Convert. IMEI on the menu and on the box, they must be identical.
- π Check the number on the official Xiaomi website in the authentication section.
- π± Make sure the number of SIM-The cards in the settings correspond to the tray.
Additionally, you should check the serial number (S/N). It is also listed on the box and in the Settings section β About Phone β All settings. The coincidence of all identifiers ensures that the internal components have not been replaced with compatible counterparts.

Save a picture of the box with the IMEI sticker until unpacked, and in case of a dispute, this will be your main proof that you were sold a device with that particular ID.
Analysis of the activation date and guarantee
One of the most effective ways to check if a new Xiaomi phone is analysing the date it first activates. Xiaomi servers record the moment the device is first turned on with the inserted device. SIM-If the phone is supposedly new, but the activation date is a month ago, it is a restored copy or a return.
You can check through special services or by contacting official support with IMEI. However, there is an easier way through the Engineering Diagnostics menu, although it is not available on all firmware: Enter the code ##6484## or ##4636## to access hidden menus.
| Parameter | New phone | Restored/B/Y |
|---|---|---|
| Activation date | Coincides with the date of purchase (Β± a couple of days) | Long before the date of purchase |
| Battery status | 100% health, 1-10 cycles | Reduced capacity, many cycles |
| Factory films | Perfectly glued, dust free. | Missing or crooked |
| Filling memory | System minimum | Remains of photos, accounts, cache |
If the activation date doesn't match your purchase date, ask the seller for an explanation. The official warranty also starts to flow from the moment of first activation, so buying a "new" phone with last year's activation, you lose months of warranty service.

Diagnosis of battery status
The lithium polymer batteries used in Xiaomi smartphones have a limited life cycle charge-discharge. The new battery can not wear out. Even if the phone has been in storage for a year, the chemical processes inside are slow and the loss of capacity should be minimal (no more than 1-2%).
Check the battery status through the engineering menu. Go to the Phone app and dial ##6485##. The Battery Info menu will open.
- π MB_06 β Battery health status (should be "Good").
- π’ MF_02 β Number of full charge cycles (for a new phone, the norm is considered to be the norm) 0-5 cycles, maximum to 10-15 factory-test).
- β‘ MF_05 β actual residual capacity (should be close to nominal capacity).
If you see that the charging cycles are 50 or 100, and the seller claims that the phone is new and sealed is a lie, this number of cycles is accumulated in 2-3 months of active use, and also note the current charge parameter: a new phone from the factory usually has a charge in the region of 50-60% for safe storage.
β οΈ Note: Some unscrupulous sellers may "reset" the cycle counter software, so the ##6485## menu readings should be considered in conjunction with other features, such as the status of charging contacts.

Finding traces of operation and use
Visual inspection of the device itself requires good lighting and preferably a magnifier or macro shot on another phone's camera.Microscopic scratches around the camera lenses, in the headphone jack (if any) and most importantly, in the USB-C charging port will give out use.
The charging connector is an indicator of the life of the phone. The cord enters the new port with a characteristic dense click, there is no dust and pile inside. In the used phone, pocket dust often accumulates inside the connector, and contacts can have scuffs from multiple connections.
Also, take a closer look at the speaker. The speaker grid in the new phone is perfectly clean. Any dark spots, villi or color changes in the grid suggest that the phone has been used, perhaps even in a dusty environment. It is almost impossible to wash the speaker to a factory state without disassembling.
Notice the screws. In some Xiaomi models, they're hidden under stubs or near the tray. SIM-If the screwdriver hats show traces of a screwdriver (sliced coating, scratches), it means that the phone has been opened.

The absence of a factory protective film on the screen when the box is sealed is physically impossible. The film is pasted by a robot on the conveyor before packaging.
Software verification and data reset
The new Xiaomi smartphone, when first turned on, passes the initial setup stage (choosing a language, connecting to Wi-Fi, logging in to your account). If after turning on the phone immediately hit the desktop with application icons, someone has already configured it.
However, experienced resellers can do a full reset (Wipe Data) by hiding the traces of use. So it is important to check the About section. Go to Settings β About Phone β All settings and look at the time and statistics.
Try to find hidden files. Sometimes you can still remember folders from previous users, messenger cache or photos in the gallery basket. Also check the list of installed applications: if there are applications on the system that you did not install (except system ones), this is cause for doubt.
It's important to check if the firmware is not changed.Chinese versions (CN), Those that are flashed for global ones can have an unlocked bootloader, and you can check this by pressing the power and volume button, or in the Settings menu. β On the phone, quick press. 7 once-over MIUI/HyperOS. The status of the bootloader must be "Locked".
adb shell getprop ro.boot.flash.lockedThis command, via ADB (Android Debug Bridge), will show the bootloader lock status. Unless you're a programmer and you've ordered the unlock specifically, the status should be "1" (locked). An unlocked bootloader is often a sign of a Chinese-made or repaired device.
β οΈ Warning: Root rights on a new phone are not allowed, and this immediately voids the warranty and indicates a deep interference with the system.

Before you fully configure your new phone, take a screenshot of the About Phone screen and battery status, which will record the initial state of the device in case of future disputes with the seller.
