The wearables market is full of cues that are visually almost indistinguishable from the original, but inferior in sound and security. Fake Xiaomi headphones are ubiquitous, and even a seasoned user can fall for fraud by buying the device from hand or in questionable shops. The problem is not only bad sound, but also the lack of protection from overload, which can damage the ear.
Chinese accessories manufacturers have learned to make almost perfect copies of packaging, but trifles still give out counterfeit. In this article, we will examine the detailed differences between original products and fakes, paying special attention to the appearance of the box, labeling and software verification. Only a comprehensive approach to verification ensures that you bought the original product of the brand.
Before you pay for a purchase, you need to carefully examine the package from all sides, and often at this stage, you can detect a fake without even opening the box.
Quality analysis of printing and packaging
The first thing that catches your eye when you look at it is the quality of the print and materials. Xiaomi's original packaging is made of dense, matte cardboard with clear folding lines. Counterfeit products often have a glossy shine where they shouldn't be, or the cardboard is too soft and easily crumpled with a light fingerstroke.
Notice the color scheme of the logo. The original orange square with the inscription MI has a well-defined hue that does not go into red or yellow. On fakes, the colors often look faded or, conversely, overly bright, "acid".
The text on the box should be printed in a perfectly flat font without "floating" letters. Pay special attention to the small text with technical characteristics on the bottom edge.
- π Check the clarity of the barcode: lines should not merge, and the numbers below them should be read without a magnifying glass.
- π¨ Assess the saturation of the color of the logo: it should be uniform, without gradients and stains.
- π¦ Touch the material: the original cardboard has a pleasant roughness, not a slippery film.
β οΈ Warning: If there are grammatical errors in the English text or strange fonts in the description of characteristics, this is a complete sign of forgery.
The quality of the box itself is also important: the walls must fit tightly, without gaps or distortions, and if the box is skewed or its faces diverge, this indicates artisanal production.
Verification of labels and codes
There's always an information sticker on the back or bottom of the box, which is one of the most important elements to check, and the original sticker clearly states the device model, serial number (S/N), IMEI (if there's a communication module), production date, and barcode.
The barcode must match the headphone model, and you can check it through special scanning apps, although databases are updated often, and it's more important to check the sticker itself for the presence of air bubbles underneath and the quality of the glue.
The serial number is a unique identifier, and on the original boxes it is often laser-engraved or a high-quality thermal print that is not erased by the finger, and on fakes, the sticker can simply be glued on top of another, or the text on it is blurred.
Where to find the serial number on different models?
Compare the data on the sticker with the information on the device itself (if there is one) or on the warranty card. The discrepancy of even one digit indicates that the box and the device are not a pair, or it is a hoard of different parts.
Also, look at the CE mark and other certificates of conformity, which have clear outlines on the original, and for fakes, the certification logos can be distorted or have incorrect proportions.
Compilation and quality of accessories
When you open the box, you're immediately exposed to the inside of the product. Xiaomi's original headphones are in a plastic padding or cardboard shape that perfectly replicates the contours of the device. There should be no backlash, no extraneous smells of cheap plastic.
The kit is another marker of originality. Depending on the model, the box may contain: charging cable, interchangeable mounts of different sizes, instructions. The cable should be of high quality, with a dense braid or a smooth, but not sticky surface.
The manual in the original is often a multilingual brochure or a rolled-up sheet of thick paper with clear text, with either no instructions at all in forgeries, or a poorly xeropied sheet with blurred text in broken English or Chinese.
- π§ Ambushes: Must be made of hypoallergenic silicone or soft tissue, without a sharp chemical odor.
- π Cable: connectors should be smooth, without barbs, logos (if any) β clear.
- π Documentation: Having a warranty stamped by the seller (for official deliveries) increases the chances of originality.
Look at the headphones, the plastic of the body should be uniform, without visible seams, chips or sticking parts, dynamic heads should not dangle inside the body.
π‘
Smell the plastic. The sharp, pungent smell of cheap plastic is a sure sign of fake. Xiaomi's original materials are eco-certified and almost smellless.
Software verification through the Mi Home application
The most reliable way to distinguish the original is to connect the headphones to a smartphone. Xiaomi ecosystem devices work perfectly with the Mi Home or Xiaomi Earbuds app. Counterfeits are either not detected at all or are displayed as an unknown device without the ability to customize.
To check, download the official app from Google Play or the App Store. Turn on Bluetooth on your phone and put your headphones in the case (or turn them on). When you bring the original device to a smartphone with Bluetooth enabled and geolocation, you often see pairing animations on the screen.
If the headphones are connected, go to Bluetooth settings or the Mi Home app. The original devices allow you to update the firmware Update, configure the equalizer, change the purpose of the buttons and check the charge of each headphone separately.
βοΈ Checking in the annex
Fake models often have static code that doesnβt update. If the app doesnβt have any settings other than a basic connection, or the model is defined as βGeneric Bluetooth Device,β thatβs a worrying sign.
β οΈ Attention: Some advanced fakes can fake a device name in Bluetooth. Don't rely on the name "Mi True Wireless Earbuds" only, check the functionality inside the application.
Comparison of sound and microphone operation
Sound quality is a subjective but important parameter. Xiaomi's original headphones are famous for balanced sound: pure high frequencies, pronounced but not humming basses. Counterfeiting is often skewed with sound: either solid squeaking and ringing, or deaf taunting without details.
Note the insulation. In the original models (especially those with active noise cancellation, ANC), the pressure difference when you turn on the mode is physically audible, the fakes either have no real noise-making function, or they only create a vacuum effect without suppressing external noise.
The microphone is the Achilles' heel of most copies. When you talk, the person should hear you clearly. In fakes, the voice often drowns in noise, interrupts or sounds like it's out of a barrel. Check the microphone by recording a voice message or calling someone.
Also check for latency when watching videos. Originals have optimizations to minimize audio and video dissynchronization. In cheap copies, actors' lips can move before you hear the sound.
Table of differences between the original and the fake
For the sake of comparison, we've put the major differences together into a single table, and use it as a checklist when you buy it.
| Characteristics | Original Xiaomi | Fake (Copy) |
|---|---|---|
| The quality of the box | Tight matte cardboard, clear edges | Glossy, soft cardboard, skewed |
| MI logo | Smooth orange, clear edges | Going into red/yellow, blurred edges |
| Mi Home appendix | Full support, software updates, settings | Not defined or basic connection |
| Sound. | Balanced, detailed. | Flat, noisy, no bass or high |
| Smell. | There is no or slight smell of plastic | A sharp chemical smell |
Analyzing these parameters allows you to determine the origin of the product with high accuracy. Do not ignore any of the points, as counterfeit manufacturers are constantly improving the quality of external copies.
Where to buy to avoid risk
The best protection against counterfeiting is the right place to buy, and Xiaomiβs official stores, major electronics retailers and authorized partners guarantee almost 100% originality.
Buying on marketplaces (AliExpress, Ozon, Wildberries) requires more caution. Always look at the seller's rating, the number of reviews and the availability of certificates. If the price is suspiciously low (for example, half the average market), it is almost always a sign of fraud or the sale of recovered devices.
When buying from hand (Avito, Yula), ask for a check about the purchase or a screenshot of the order from the online store. The personal meeting should take place in a crowded place where you can safely check the headphones on all points of our instructions.

Saving 30-40% on headphones is rarely justified. The risk of buying a fake that is not working or harmful to hearing is too great.
Remember that original Xiaomi products have their own price, due to the quality of components and technology. There are no miracles, and quality sound can not cost 300 rubles.
