Introduction: Why is the pronunciation of Xiaomi so important?
Xiaomi has long been a leader in the smartphone, smart appliances and gadgets market, but even among experienced users, there is still no consensus on how to pronounce its name in Russian: “xiaomi” or “xiaomi”?
To make matters worse, Chinese phonetics don't adapt well to Russian, and the original name is Xiaomi, where Xiao means "small" and Mi means "rice." Until 2018, both Xiaomi and Xiaomi were available in Russian-language press releases and on Xiaomi’s website, but with the company’s entry into the Russian market and the opening of an official representative office, the situation changed, and in 2019, the press service of Xiaomi Russia said that the preferred option was the Xiaomi.
This is also confirmed by modern materials:

- 📢 Press releases for media (for example, on company.xiaomi.ru) also record “Xiaomi».
- 🎤 At the events, company representatives pronounce the name as “Xiaomi” with emphasis on the first syllable.
However, some documents (e.g., device instructions) still contain xiaomi, which is because some of the transfers were done by third-party contractors or before the introduction of a single standard. URL-Domain addresses (e.g. mi.com) and hashtags (#Xiaomi) are retained with original spelling.
Linguistic analysis: why is “Shaomi” closer to the original?
To understand which is the correct one, we will understand the phonetics of Chinese: the syllable "Xiao" in Putonghua (standard Chinese) is pronounced as "xiao" with a descending-upward tone (third tone). There are no tones in Russian, but the sound "xia" is transmitted quite accurately, but "xia" is already a distortion that has arisen from trying to adapt the word to the usual Russian ear combinations.
Let's compare the transliteration:

- 🇷🇺 Option 1: “Xiaomi” as close as possible to the original.
- 🇷🇺 Option 2: "Xiaomi" - appeared due to the influence of English transliteration (Xiaomi, where "X" is read as "x»).
Linguists note that in Russian, direct transliteration is more often used to convey Chinese words without adding unnecessary sounds.
- 🍜 Lámiàn → «lamina (not "sword»).
- 🥢 Kuàizi → «kuaizi (not kuaizi»).
Therefore, “Shaomi” is more logical in terms of language norms.

Interestingly, the word “xiaomi” is more common in spoken language, probably due to habit and influence of English-language sources, but in written materials (especially official ones) “shaomi” is dominant, and there is also a dependence on age: users over 35 years old are more likely to say “shaomi” and young people – “xiaomi”.
⚠️ Note: In some regions of Russia (for example, in the Far East), due to its proximity to China, the version of Xiaomi with emphasis on the first syllable and a soft "S" is common.
How to write: “Xiaomi”, “Xiaomi” or “Xiaomi”?
It is important to distinguish between spoken language and written sources:
- 📝 In the texts: If you are writing an article, review or official document, use “Xiaomi” – this is in accordance with the recommendations of the company.
- 🗣️ In conversation: You can say both shaomi and xiaomi, both are understandable, but shaomi sounds more professional, especially if you're discussing technical details.
- 🌐 Online: Hashtags and mentions are better used with the original #Xiaomi or #Mi, making your post easier to find.
A special case is the name of the models.
