Xiaomi, a Chinese company, has long won the trust of millions of users around the world through a combination of high quality, innovative technology and affordable prices. But the brand’s popularity has a downside: the market is flooded with fakes that are almost indistinguishable from the originals. According to the International AntiCounterfeiting Coalition, up to 15% of Xiaomi devices sold through untested channels are fakes – from smartphones to smart lamps.
The problem is especially relevant in regions where Xiaomi’s official distributors are poorly represented and prices for gadgets in local stores are suspiciously low. Counterfeiting not only works worse, but can pose a real threat, from battery spontaneous combustion to leakage of personal data through malware. This article will help you learn how to distinguish the original Xiaomi devices from copies – with detailed instructions, photo comparisons and expert advice.
1. Packaging check: 7 key details
The original Xiaomi box is the first and most visible sign of authenticity. The manufacturer pays special attention to the quality of the packaging, so even small inconsistencies should alert you.
- 📦 The material of the box. Originals are made of thick, matte-coated cardboard. Counterfeitings often have a glossy surface or a cardboard that is too thin that flexes when pressed.
- 🎨 Colors and print. The Mi or Xiaomi logo on the original box is clear, blurless, uniformly colored. Fakes often show color shifts or sloppy edges of inscriptions.
- 🔍 Serial number, there's got to be a sticker at the bottom of the box. IMEI, S/N Check if it matches the barcode. IMEI with what is specified in the settings of the device (Settings) → The phone).
- 📏 Size and weight: Compare the dimensions of the box to the official data on mi.com. Counterfeiting is often of different proportions or weighs significantly less.
Pay special attention to security stickers. Xiaomi original boxes are always sealed with a brand hologram with the brand logo. When you try to remove it, it breaks down, leaving a trace of "VOID" (on fake holograms, often unstick completely). Also check the documentation: the package must be a warranty card with the stamp of the official dealer and instructions in the language of the country of sale.
Example of the original and fake box Xiaomi Redmi Note 12
Warning: Some scammers use original boxes from other Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi 9A packaging to sell a fake Redmi Note 11).Always check the model on the box with the label on the device itself!
2. External inspection of the device: what should alert
Even if the packaging looks perfect, take a close look at the device itself. Counterfeiting often produces small parts that are difficult to forge with perfect accuracy.
- 🖥️ Screen: The original Xiaomi smartphones have an oleophobic coating (repels fingerprints). Swipe your finger across the screen, there will be greasy marks on the fake. Also check the uniformity of the backlight: fakes often show yellowness or dark spots at the corners.
- 🔧 Buttons and connectors. The on and volume buttons on the original have a clear stroke without a backlash. USB-C (Or Micro-USB on older models, it should be symmetrical, without gaps. For fakes, there is often a curved connector or uneven gaps between the case and the glass.
- 📡 Antenna lines. On the original Xiaomi antenna lines (plastic inserts on the metal body) are perfectly smooth and symmetrical. Fakes may have irregular or no antenna lines.
- 🔊 Speakers and microphones: Count the number of microphone and speaker holes, and the location and number of them must match the official model specifications.
Note the weight of the device. Original Xiaomi smartphones weigh strictly according to passport data (for example, Xiaomi 13 Lite - 171 g, Redmi Note 12 Pro+ - 208 g). Counterfeiting is often easier by 10-20 grams due to cheap materials. Also check the chamber module: the original lenses do not protrude outside the body, and the camera glass is not scratched with a nail (fakes often use plastic).

3. Software and firmware verification
One of the most reliable ways to detect a fake is to look at the firmware of the device. Xiaomi's original smartphones run on the branded MIUI shell, which has unique features.
- Version MIUI. Go to Settings → About Phone. The original will show the firmware version (e.g. MIUI 14.0.5 Global). Fakes often use custom firmware with names like "MIUI v12" without specifying the stable version or region (Global/EEA/China).
- Google services: The original global versions of Xiaomi have Google Play, YouTube and Google Assistant preinstalled, and may not be available on fakes or require manual installation.
- Software Updates. Try checking for updates in Settings → The phone. → System update. Original devices get OTA-Updates directly from Xiaomi.Fakes are either not updated or offer to download files from suspicious sources.
- IMEI and serial number. Type *#06#, and the IMEI will appear on the screen, matching what is shown on the box and under the battery. Check it at imei.info, the original IMEI will be tied to the Xiaomi model.
Also, look at the sensors. Xiaomi's original smartphones have accurate light, proximity and gyroscope sensors, which can be checked using the Sensor Test app (available on Google Play), and on fakes, they often show incorrect values or don't work at all.
Make sure the MIUI version contains the word "Global" or "EEA"
Check the availability of Google services (play Market, YouTube)
Enter *#06# and check IMEI with box
Try to update the software through the official menu
Install the Sensor Test application and test the sensors-->
A critical sign of forgery: if the device’s settings do not include the “Additional settings” with the Region submenu, it is 100% fake. Xiaomi’s original smartphones always have this option to change the firmware region.
4. Hardware diagnostics: testing the "iron"
Fakes are often equipped with cheap analogues of processors, batteries and memory modules, and you can check the hardware with special applications and tests:
| Parameter | Original | Fake. |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Complies with official specifications (e.g. Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Xiaomi 13) | Cheap analogue (for example, Helio G85 instead of Snapdragon 778G) |
| RAM | The volume is the same as the stated (for example, 8 GB LPDDR5) | Low volume (e.g. 4 GB instead of 6 GB) or LPDDR3 type instead of LPDDR5 |
| Battery | Capacity corresponds to passport (checked in AIDA64) | Capacity is lowered by 20-30% (for example, 3,500 mAh instead of 5000 mAh) |
| Camera. | Modules from Sony or Samsung with correct megapixels | Unknown sensors with low resolution (for example, 8 MP instead of 108 MP) |
To check, use the applications:
- AIDA64 – provides detailed information about the processor, memory and other components.
Pay special attention to the performance test. Run an AnTuTu Benchmark or Geekbench and compare the results with the official data for your model. Counterfeit usually scores 2-3 times lower due to weak hardware. For example, the original Redmi Note 12 Pro+ scores ~500,000 in AnTuTu, and its copy is no more than 200,000.
💡
If the AIDA64 app lists an unknown motherboard manufacturer in the System section (e.g., “Unknown” instead of “Xiaomi”), this is a sure sign of forgery.
5. Check through official Xiaomi services
Xiaomi provides several tools for authenticating devices, and here are the most reliable ways to do this:
- The official IMEI verification site. Go to mi.com/global/verify, enter IMEI or S/N from the box. The system will show whether the device is original and the activation date. Attention: if the site gives an error or the device is not found, you have a fake.
- The Mi Verify app. Download the official Mi Verify app from Google Play (Android only). It scans the IMEI and compares it to Xiaomi's database. It also checks firmware integrity.
- Service center. If you are in doubt, contact an authorized service center Xiaomi, specialists will conduct diagnostics and issue an official certificate of authenticity, the service is paid (from 500 rubles), but reliable.
You can also use Xiaomi's support chatbot on Telegram (@XiaomiSupportBot), send the bot photos of the device, the box and IMEI, and it will do a preliminary check, but only the official service will make the final verdict.
⚠️ Warning: Fraudsters often fake verification pages IMEI, creating phishing sites (e.g. mi-verify.com instead of mi.com/verify). Always check the address of the site – it should start with https://www.mi.com!
6.Price and place of purchase: how not to run into fake
The easiest way to avoid counterfeiting is to buy Xiaomi devices from official stores or authorized resellers. However, if you are considering buying from hand or marketplaces, note the following signs of fraud:
- 💰 If a smartphone sells 30 to 50 percent cheaper than the market average, that's a cause for suspicion. 13T can not cost 20 000 rubles (its real price is from 45 000 rubles).
- 🛒 Suspicious salesman. Check out the reviews of the seller on the site. Fraudsters often create new accounts or have negative reviews about "unoriginal technique».
- 📄 No documentation. Xiaomi's original devices are always sold with a check, a warranty card and a box. If the seller refuses to provide photo documents, it's a red flag.
- 🌍 Describe the market for which the device is intended, such as smartphones for China (China) ROM) Google does not have any services and may not support some frequencies. 4G/5G Russia.
Also be careful with purchases on AliExpress and similar sites. Even if the seller is highly rated, the risk of running into a fake remains. Security rule: never buy Xiaomi devices “without a box” or “after rebranding” – these are frequent scammers tricks.
💡
The only way to buy the original Xiaomi is to buy it in the official store (mi.com), from an authorized reseller (Svyaznoy, M. Video) or in the branded Mi Store.
