The personal electric vehicle market is crowded with offerings where hundreds of models are easily confused. Customers often look for reliable solutions, but stumble upon low-quality copies masquerading as products of a well-known brand. Xiaomi electric scooter has become a benchmark in the budget segment, making it a main target for unscrupulous manufacturers.
Counterfeiting doesnβt just look different β it can be dangerous to health because of an unstable battery and a weak frame. In this article, weβll take a closer look at all the visual and software features that will help you avoid buying a cat in a bag and losing money.
You don't have to be an electronics expert to detect counterfeiting, but you have to know a few key places to look when you look at a device in a store or when you receive a package, and we've developed a step-by-step algorithm for how to do it.
Visual inspection of packaging and marking
The first thing that gets into the hands of a customer is a box, and the original packaging is made of thick cardboard with a clear, bright print, and it should not have blurred logos, brand name typos, or strange fonts.
Pay special attention to the stickers with technical information, they must indicate the serial number (SN), model of the device and the date of production, these data must match the information on the scooter itself.
- π¦ Check the integrity of factory seals and scotch β they should be branded, not regular stationery tape.
- π·οΈ Compare the font on the box with the official images on the manufacturerβs website β in fakes, letters often βfloat.
- π¨π³ Please note that the instructions are available in several languages, including Russian, if the device is intended for the EAEU market.
Often, fraudsters save on printing, so the colors on the box can be dull or, conversely, too saturated. The Mi logo should be applied smoothly, without distortions and air bubbles.
β οΈ Warning: If you have a box that says "Xaiomi," "Xiomi" or "Xiaomy," it's 100% fake.
The inside of the box also matters. The original Mi Electric Scooter models have a sophisticated locking system so that the device doesn't hang around when it's being transported. In replicas, the scooter can just lie in a styrofoam bag.
Quality of assembly and materials of the body
Once unpacked, it's time for a tactile inspection. The build quality of Xiaomi's original devices is always high: the gaps between parts are minimal and uniform throughout the perimeter. There should be no sticking glue or sharp edges of plastic anywhere.
Inspect the frame and foot platform. The original platform often has an anti-slip coating with a clearly extruded logotip. In cheap copies, the sticker can simply be glued on top and quickly fall off.
Note the weight of the device. The originals have a specific mass, as specified in the specification. If the scooter is suspiciously light, this may indicate the use of cheap aluminum alloys or reduced battery capacity.
βοΈ Assemblance quality check
Control buttons placed on the steering wheel or platform must be gentle but confident. Counterfeiters often use cheap tactile switches that can stick or require strong pressure.
Pay special attention to welds on the frame, which are straight, cleaned and painted in metal color, rough welding, sticking out drops of metal or rust in new products are unacceptable.
Checking through the Mi Home app
The most reliable way to verify a device is by connecting to the Xiaomi ecosystem. Original scooters are successfully identified by the Mi Home or Xiaomi Home app.
To check, download the official app, sign up and try adding the device. The search process is automatic if the scooter is on and is next to the smartphone.
| Function | Original | Fake. | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Definition in the annex | Instantly. | Impossible or a mistake | |||
| Firmware update | Available. | Unavailable | Blocking the regions | Works (with nuance) | Not applicable. |
| Travel statistics | It's still there. | Absent. |
If the app doesn't see the scooter, it's a wake-up call. Some advanced copies may have chips that mimic the connection, but the functionality in the app will be stripped or broken.
What if the app sees the scooter, but does not allow to update?
In the app, you can also see the exact mileage, the charge level of each battery cell (in advanced models) and the status of the system, and the absence of this data or the display of 0 km on the used device indicates flashing or forgery.
Analysis of the display and control interface
The screen is the face of the scooter interface. In the original models, the display is bright and clear, the information is read even in direct sunlight. The pixels are not burnt out, there are no dead zones.
When turned on, the original Xiaomi scooter displays a welcome logo of "Mi" or "Xiaomi." Copies often feature a standard screensaver with numbers or a logo of an unknown manufacturer.
- π Charge indication should be smooth; sharp jumps from 100% to 20% indicate poor calibration BMS.
- π‘ The brightness of the backlight in the original is adjusted or has several modes, in fakes it is often constant and dim.
- π The sound signals in the original are clear and pleasant, in replicas they can wheez or sound like a cheap squeak.
The menu interface should be logical. Switching speed modes (S, D, Eco) should be instantaneous. Lag in the response of the screen to the button presses is a sign of poor performance of the controller.
β οΈ WARNING: If the display displays strange characters, characters instead of the usual symbols or speed in miles without the possibility of translation in km / h, the device can be a gray import or fake.
Also check the headlight. In the original, it turns on through an app or a button, has a smooth beam of light. In cheap analogues, the light can be dim, flashing or even decorative.
π‘
Check the light during the day: turn it on and look at the asphalt. The original headlight gives a clear spot of light, not just a faint glow.
Test Drive and Behavior on the Road
No theory can replace practice. Test drive reveals hidden defects that are not visible on static inspection. Acceleration of the original scooter is smooth, without jerking or jerking.
Note the brakes. Xiaomi models typically use a combination of electronic and mechanical (disc or drum) brakes. The brake handle should be predictable.
Listen to the motor wheel. The original engine is quiet, making only a slight hum. Extraneous sounds, such as grinding, knocking or loud humming, indicate poor quality bearings or magnets.
π‘
Smoothness and absence of vibrations are the main indicator of the quality of the chassis assembly and wheel balancing.
Check the stability of the irregularities. The frame of the original scooter has a certain elasticity, which extinguishes small vibrations. The rigidity of the stone slab or, conversely, excessive wobbly is a bad sign.
If the scooter claims 25 km/h, but barely accelerates to 15 on flat asphalt, this is a sign of a weak engine or limited software version.
Compilation and guarantee documents
The final step of the inspection is to analyze what comes in the package. The original charging must have the appropriate quality certificates, clear markings and a well-assembled case.
The kit also usually includes a set of tools for initial assembly and maintenance, a pump (in some models) and an instruction manual.
Make sure to check for a warranty card, which must include the model of the device, the serial number, the date of sale and the seller's seal.
- π The charger cable should be elastic, without the smell of cheap rubber.
- π The instructions should be printed on quality paper, not on thin sheets, similar to a check tape.
- π οΈ Tools (hexes) should be made of hard metal, not soft alloy, which bends on the first use.
β οΈ Warning: The absence of a charger in the kit or its mismatch of the declared power (for example, 42V instead of 36V) can lead to a fire of the battery on the first charge.
Keep the check and packaging for at least 14 days (the return period of the goods of good quality), or better until the end of the warranty period.
