Knowing the release date of a Xiaomi phone is a challenge that comes with buying a used device, checking warranty or assessing the relevance of a firmware. The manufacturer does not always show this information in a prominent place, but there are several ways to determine it, from the obvious to the hidden. In this article, we will discuss all available methods, including decrypting the serial number, checking by IMEI and analyzing factory packaging.
Itβs important to understand that the production date may differ from the activation date or the start of the warranty period, for example, a smartphone could have been in stock for several months before the sale, we will also explain how to avoid counterfeiting and why some methods do not work for all Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO models.
Verification of the release date by serial number (SN)
Serial number (SN) is a unique device identifier that contains encrypted information about the date of production. Xiaomi SN format depends on the year of release and model. For example, for smartphones released after 2018, the standard format ABCD12345678, where the first 4 characters encode the month and year.
To decipher the date:
- π Find the serial number in the settings: Settings β The phone. β General information β Serial number.
- π Use online decoders (such as IMEI.info) or manual decryption: First 2 symbol - year (for example, 20 = 2020). The following: 2 symbol - month (for example, month, 05 = may).
Exceptions: Older models (before 2017) may have different SN formats, such as the Xiaomi Mi5, which has a date encoded in 5-8 characters. If your SN is not decryptable, try other methods.
2.Date on factory box and stickers
The easiest way to do this is to inspect the original packaging, and Xiaomi boxes show the date of production in one of three places:
- π¦ On a white barcode sticker (format) YYYY-MM-DD or YY/MM/DD).
- π On the printed stamp on the side of the box (often next to the Made in China logo).
- π On the warranty card (if attached).
Note that the date on the box may be 1-3 months ahead of the actual date of the phone assembly, this is due to logistics and packaging time, and make sure that the sticker is not re-adhesive, which is a sign of a fake.
π‘
If the sticker on the box is erased, try to light it with a flashlight at an angle - often the numbers become visible.
3. IMEI check: official services and restrictions
IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is another unique identifier that can be used to tell the release date, but Xiaomi does not provide this information directly through official channels.
- Find IMEI in settings (Settings β About Phone β General Information β IMEI) or dial *#06#.
- Use third-party services: π SNDeeP.info β shows the date of activation (not production!). π§ IMEI.info β sometimes determines the year of release of popular models.
Important: IMEI shows the date of activation on the network, not the date of production, and the difference can range from a few days to months.
Why is IMEI not always accurate?
4. Hidden menus and engineering codes
Some Xiaomi models let you know the production date through an engineering menu, which doesnβt work on all devices, but can be useful for older smartphones (like the Redmi Note 4X or Mi A1).
Instructions:
- Open the phone app and type in: ##4636###
- Go to the tab Information about the phone.
- Find the Date of Manufacture or MF Date strings.
If this item is not available, try the alternative code:
##284##(It works on some POCO models).
βοΈ Checking through the Engineering Menu
5. Analysis of firmware and MIUI version
The build date indirectly indicates the age of the device.
- Go to Settings β About Phone β MIUI version.
- Click a few times on the line with the version until more information appears.
- Find the Build Date string (e.g. 20230515 = May 15, 2023).
To avoid being deceived, always double-check the data using several methods, for example, if the SN is 2022 and the box is 2021, ask the seller for a photo of the battery sticker.
